Much of artist Renée Stout’s work focuses on the lives of Black women and incorporates her interest in African traditions, and her fascination with fortunetellers and the practitioners of Voodoo. Stout’s “Woman Possessed” was most recently on view in our “Creating an American Identity" exhibition. "When I'm dealing with the idea of magic systems and spells, I'm often trying to show the viewer what I imagine something unseen looks like." - Renée Stout. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #africanamericanartists #blackartists #blackexcellence #celebratediversity #reneestout Image credit: Renée Stout, "Woman Possessed," 2010, Ink monotype on paper. Second day in DC in June 2023, @left_of_here and I went to the Hirshhorn. I loved the architecture of the museum itself and probably could have spent the entire day just waking in circles inside it without getting bored. The first painting ("See the Truth" by Renée Stout) and video (pictured, not taped, "Trailer" by Saskia Olde Wolbers) have their description cards in the immediately following images. See the Truth was striking enough in its coloration to draw my attention from across the room and the story attached on the card is definitely worth a read. 🖤👁️♥️ Trailer was deeply strange in a way that stuck with me for the next several hours as our DC trip continued. I had the good luck to walk in near the beginning, and the even better luck to have a partner (shout out @left_of_here ) patient enough to wait with me while I watched the rest of it, then stayed with me while it replayed. You should watch it if it's available online or anywhere near you. It's been almost a year and I still regularly remember how it made me feel. 💚🦋💀🌱 The images after that do not have their title cards because I had not thought about taking a picture of them yet. My bad. I also have no idea what the artist who made the sign in the last picture meant. To me it could read as either a 'people are so self obsessed, they're ruining the country with their selfishness' kind of thing or as a reminder that our nation is the sum of many individual parts, all of which deserve to feel like respected part of this national community, and that we only live in a community in the first place so that we can value each other. I choose to read it the second way because it slaps. ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ #hirshhorn #artmuseum #reneestout #saskiaoldewolbears #washington #a(ME)ricaBandNameDibs

FSA Inspirations: Leesa Fanning Curatorial practice at FSA extends beyond our own exhibitions and programming to engage and feature work that others are researching, writing, directing, and creating. See FSA’s dedicated Inspiration page with introduction and references to the former Curator of Contemporary Art at Nelson Atkins Museum and FSA Visionary Leesa Fanning who has considered three decades of contemporary art that engages spirituality in her 2018 publication, “Encountering the Spiritual in Contemporary Art,” one of FSA’s Inspirations. “[This publication} significantly broadens the scope of previous studies to include new media and non-Western and Indigenous art (in addition to that of the East and West), presents art from diverse cultures with equal status, promotes cultural specificity, and moves beyond notions of ‘center’ and ‘periphery,’ celebrating the plurality and global nature of contemporary art today.” —Leesa Fanning . Approximately 27-4186 Hz. “Railsback Curve” is a term used to describe the discrepancy in piano tuning vs well tempered tuning, it’s the physical impossibility of achieving perfect tuning. Looking for an exhibition to fit into your 2026 schedule? Say no more! 😏🖼️ “Gateways: African American Art from the Key Collection” is available 5/2026 - 8/2026 for a REDUCED FEE! 🤩 ABOUT ERIC KEY: Eric Key is an arts administrator, curator, investor, and collector who, being immersed in the art world for decades, has closely observed its relationship with African American artists over the years. Key began collecting African American art in the early 90’s, long before the arts industry, and society at large, granted it the increased, but still not full, recognition it has today. As Key states, the works in his collection are an extension of himself, a black man in a still mostly white art world; they are an extension of the country in which he lives and an extension of the artists who created them. The show’s roster includes some of the most recognizable contemporary black artists, such as Sam Gilliam, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, William Artis, Samella Lewis, and Renee Stout. JJ Pinckney, Mark Wilson Jr, Tooly “I First Heard Your Voice Through The Womb” Mixed media installation 104” x 96” x 56” In the style of a traditional Gullah vendors tent, this installation stands as an offering to the ancestral guides of its creators. The sounds of rain signals the cleansing and nourishing powers of water. The kirtan, an Indian harmonium instrument used in consulting spirit guides by awakening them through music, is refashioned as a Gullah spiritual tool. It traps evil spirits in its water filled tubes, releasing them anew. At the exhibition’s opening, viewers were asked to nourish themselves by taking fruit, another byproduct of rainfall, from the installation. . “Stereo Sights & Sounds” on view @marcstrausgallery through July 30th. . FREE Virtual Artist Talk with Renée Stout next Thursday, April 13 on Zoom at 6 PM CST! Renée Stout will discus her artwork including “Hoodoo House” which will be on view at LSU MOA, and her friendship with Thornton Dial. Pre-register on Eventbrite to receive Zoom invite the day of the event. ABOUT THE ARTIST. Renée Stout is a mixed media artist who lives and works in Washington, DC. She draws inspiration from current social and political events, the African Diaspora, daily city life, and the spiritual realm. Stout’s objects and paintings often emerge from her decades long research into art history and Hoodoo spiritual traditions that have arisen from African roots through American slavery to the present. Hoodoo practices are vibrant and very extant in parts of the American Southeast and Caribbean. Many of Stout’s sculptures are meant to connect us to the spiritual realm and otherworldly powers. They more broadly represent the hopes and desires that faiths and religions around the globe seek to fill. Universal desires for health, love, survival, and happiness. Renée Stout: "So people talk about how the Age of Aquarius is going to be this more enlightened period where the world shifts and, you know, things start to happen where humanity realizes that it has to come together. But when is it going to happen, you know? […] Maybe it's coming. Maybe this is what we see now, you know, these old structures digging their heels in because it worked for them. […] And suddenly, everybody else, be it women, minorities, everybody, you know, transgender people, everybody saying, "Wait a minute, you know, we live here. We pay taxes. We're part of this. Why is your voice the only one that's heard?" And I think that people are—there is going to be this power shift. And that's what I'm hoping. This is what I want to witness." In her 2019 oral history, noted Aquarian Renée Stout (b. 1958), a Black sculptor and assemblage artist who draws on global African heritage throughout her work, described the movement towards social enlightenment and how it has lagged for women, minorities, and transgender people. This Trans Visibility Day, it’s more important than ever to listen to all the voices that make up the chorus of society. Check out the full oral history today at s.si.edu/rstoutoh. “Ogun is a sculpture just under three feet tall, made of many different materials that are attached to a three-dimensional rectangular core....on the back of the form, some wood grain is visible and there is a very faint split at the top on the left side. On the front side of the form, there is a buildup of an iridescent, grainy material, perhaps spray paint…on the back of the sculpture’s platform, six symbols, followed by a concluding statement in English: “THEY WERE STEELWORKERS, MECHANICS, TRUCK DRIVERS, HUNTERS…WARRIORS IN A BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL – THEIRS…AND MINE.” ~ Audio Description of Ogun by Renée Stout Renée Stout | @reneestout5 Ogun (1995) images & description rp via @ackland_art_museum ©️ the artist Fe26. #aninkisitoprotectyoungblack #renéestout #reneestout #somesortofshimmer #fe26 #theyweresteelworkersmechanicstruckdrivershunterswarriorsinabattleforsurvivaltheirsandmine

Twenty artists were invited to make new work considering this question—first asked by Benjamin Franklin according to lore—as part of a bold collaboration between the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Today we feasted on the main course of our NYC weekend: the last day of Renée Stout’s exhibition at @marcstrausgallery. I had no idea that the artist was meeting us there, so that was an excellent surprise. Also @marcstrausgallery “Navigating the Abyss” an incredible collection of recent work by @reneestout5 which includes sculpture, painting, assemblage, printing, drawing, photography, and mixed media installation. From the press release- “Starting out as a photo-realist painter depicting life in everyday urban neighborhoods, Stout soon developed an interest in the mystical and spiritual traditions in African American communities. Fascinated with fortunetelling and the healing power of Hoodoo, Vodou and Santeria still practiced within the African Diaspora in the American Southeast and Caribbean, she delved into ancient spiritual traditions and belief systems. She has drawn inspiration from a wide variety of sources such as current social and political events, Western art history, the culture of African Diaspora, and daily city life. While her artistic practice is rich with references and resonances, her works are eventually unique manifestations of her own imagination, populated by mysterious narratives and imagined characters derived from the artist’s alter ego”. #reneestout #marcstraus #marcstrausgallery #nycartshows #art #mixedmedia #assemblage #painting #sculpture #christopherwool

I went to see the #afroatlantichistories exhibition @lacma the other day and was struck by this "Headstone for Marie Laveau" by Renee Stout and its #grisgrisbags as they are called in Louisiana, at the sides. #marielaveau was of course the famed Creole practitioner of #voodoo in 19th century New Orleans. The second photo shows my recently deceased mother, a New Orleans native, pointing at a cluster of Gris Gris bags hanging in a tree that we noticed on a walk in Manhattan a few years ago. Marie Laveau was my mother's fifth great aunt's niece. #reneestout @reneestout5 #blackhistorymonth #creoleneworleans #neworleansvoodoo #creolegenealogy

Renée Stout's "Blood Bottle" was recently on view in our “Creating an American Identity” permanent collection exhibition. Stout made the drawing after witnessing a woman bleeding to death outside of her home, in part as a way to process her feelings about the violent event. "If you see something you want to share that vision that’s in your head. And so, you make art, you tell a story, you play a song. It comes from inside you." - Renée Stout #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #africanamericanartists #blackartists #blackexcellence #celebratediversity #reneestout #blood Image credit: Renée Stout, "Blood Bottle," 2008, Pastel and graphite on paper.
