Frieze made between 447BC and 432BC. 1. The design and execution of the horsemen in the Parthenon frieze is one of the most remarkable achievement in ancient Greek art. 2. Riders overlap one on another. They are uniformly dressed in body armor over a short tunic, with cloak and riding boots. 3. The leading horseman looks over his shoulder. His left arm is raised, perhaps to adjust a bronze wreath, now lost, or to give a signal. 4. A youth with his horse and dog. Between 1801 and 1812, Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin and the British Ambassador to the Sublime Porte of the Ottoman Empire, removed sculptures known as the Parthenon Marbles and transported them to England. Subsequently, in 1816, he sold them to the British Museum, where they are currently exhibited and are referred to as The Elgin Marbles. Even at the time of their removal, the Marbles sparked controversy, and concerns regarding their legality were raised. In 1816, a House of Commons Select Committee conducted an investigation into whether Elgin acquired the marbles lawfully. Elgin asserted that he had obtained authorisation through a firman from the Sultan in July 1801, with the approval of local authorities. Although the committee exonerated Elgin from any wrongdoing, many still viewed the removal as an unjust appropriation. Notably, the philhellene Lord Byron expressed his sentiments: "Dull is the eye that will not weep to see Thy walls defaced, thy mouldering shrines removed By British hands, which it had best behoved To guard those relics ne'er to be restored. Curst be the hour when from their isle they roved, And once again thy hapless bosom gored, And snatch'd thy shrinking gods to northern climes abhorred!" Since then, the removal of the Marbles has remained a source of significant controversy. The first official call for their return came in 1983 when the Greek Government, represented by Melina Mercouri, a renowned actress and Greek Minister of Culture, requested the Elgin Marbles' repatriation to Greece. More recently, the controversy has reignited in a diplomatic dispute between the British and Greek governments, leading to the cancellation of a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. Currently, there are calls for the Marbles to be returned on loan. I first remember being aware of the Elgin Marbles on my first solo trip to London. I wasn’t a kid. I was 20! I couldn’t understand why my British parents recommended going to the British Museum to see the famous marbles. Of course I knew what marble stone was but The Marbles? I only knew about two other kinds marbles. The marbles—cats eyes and steelies and swirlies we kept in the beautiful blue velvety sacks that came with the bottle of Crown Royal whiskey our parents drank once upon a time. AND The marbles aka ‘mind’, my dad might refer to when asked if we could purchase one thing or another he or my mum deemed too dear … Have you lost your bloody marbles? My classical education has improved somewhat since then (barely, tbh) and I’ve been lucky enough to see the Elgin Marbles AKA the Parthenon Sculptures (why didn’t you say so!) at the British Museum in London a few times. The older I get, the more I appreciate them. The artistry. The history. Who could blame Lord Elgin for wanting to pull them down off the Parthenon in Athens and put them on pedestals at the British Museum for all the world to see? Besides the Greeks. The British may lose them to Athens where many think they properly reside (ya know, being Greek and all), and negotiations continue but in the meantime they’re still in London, attracting millions of visitors every year. As is the Rosetta Stone. So worth a few hours of your time. Don’t forget entry is free but you should make a reservation online @britishmuseum to shorten your wait time. Lots of free special interest tours too. Ask, otherwise it can be a thoroughly overwhelming place. Another plus: they do a great tea upstairs “under the magnificent roof of the Great Court”. While Michelle and I are really not into museum and ruin hunting, there were some places in Athens that had to be visited. The average person spends perhaps 3 days to a week of sightseeing in Athens. A coded message or just a random choice of tie? King Charles's tie, which featured a pattern based on the Greek flag, has sparked speculation after he wore it at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. It comes after a week-long row between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis over the Parthenon Sculptures known as the Elgin Marbles. Buckingham Palace has suggested it was just a random choice of tie. The Greek prime minister wants the ancient sculptures returned to Athens from the British Museum where they are currently housed and this is something the UK prime minister is firmly against. Royal sources noted that the tie in question had also been worn when King Charles met the South Korean delegation on their state visit to the UK last week. The King has family connections with Greece - his father, the late Prince Philip, was born in Greece and was a member of the Greek royal family.
