Not frugal related as such but I am shocked to read this headline. I personally don’t like this idea. Forcing young people to do this. As a parent of a ASD teen this really makes me think how would I feel if my teen was made to do this? What do you think? Will there be exceptions? #frugal #frugamum #parenting #parentingsen #nationalservice #prepperskills

Look at those happy faces 😍 So the battle with the LA starts.. I am about to start the appeal / tribunal process, as no decision was reached during the funding panel on Tuesday. Josh’s current mainstream school is named in his final EHCP, as there are no spaces to move him anywhere else that can meet his needs until September. So at least his current school benefit from some funding in the meantime. As for next steps, I’m drowning in paperwork and trying to keep the discussion going with the LA. Apparently his case needs, ‘the information needs to be looked at more closely and a decision will be shared after Easter’. It such a crazy process, as the specialist school that can meet Josh’s needs and have agreed a place after meeting him. They are a complete independent, so they obviously won’t hold a place indefinitely. In the meantime I’m just expected to wait with no clear set of actions points to share with me and no definitive timescale. Obviously it’s just not good enough! Plus there is no way I’ll just wait quietly. It shouldn’t be like this to fight for the education your child deserves. The system, the process and the way LAs communicate with parents is well and truly broken! #sendreformengland #sendreform #actuallyautistic #pdaawareness #adhdparenting #oddawareness #spdawareness #differentnotless #sendparenting #parentingsen #ehcpsupport #ehcp #sendeducation #educationforall

As we approach celebrating our 2nd year of Home Ed, I’ve been looking through pics/vids and notebooks at what we’ve done this past home ed year. We’ve covered so many subjects this past year it’s been amazing! We try to do visits to places that link to topics, such as Ancient Rome we visited Chester to explore the city walls. Ancient Egypt we loved the new exhibition at Manchester Museum and World Museum Liverpool. Our current history topic is World war 2, which we visited the Western Approaches museum in Liverpool, we highly recommend this as it’s the war rooms that was used at the time. Plus we have our trip to France planned for June, visiting Dunkirk and Normandy. So many groups Faiths in such as different Art classes, drama groups, forest schools. Faiths also started a new tutor who is really good and understands Faith! Not forgetting Harry Potter books for English which also cover other topics, including a trip to Harry Potter World. We’ve loved this 2nd year of home ed, the winter hasn’t been as bad(that first winter when meet ups ease and forest schools have a break it was a quiet time for me and trying to get out with Faith etc) however 2nd year we’ve been just as busy! Faiths also started new courses such as Cooking class and Fashion design. Plus she’s made so many friends! Amazing experiences, hard work which I know pictures always seem easy etc but trust me there are hard times and it’s a LOT of planning a preparing work but it’s SO worth it I think the smiling faces from Faith just show it! #homeeducation #homeeducationuk #homeeducator #forestschool #parentingadhd #parentingsen

Really recommend watching this programme, the episode shown tonight was a repeat but we had missed it. Tonight followed a teenage lad who struggles with sensory overload of sounds especially in the class room. And another lad who struggled with changes In routine and the need to have set routines. Having two children with additional needs/SEN we found this programme to be so insightful, we are aware our the kids struggles and how we can adapt as we can to help them, but to see it put into film with all the noise, lights, etc was emotional to watch to see how much everyday they experience it and how their bodies and minds just feel is overwhelming(like it is for them) You can watch this on BBC iplayer #parentingadditionalneeds #parentingsen #autism #adhd #tourettes #Dyslexia

🤔 PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is thought to be a presentation of autism - although some people believe it should be a diagnosis in its own right. 😣 “Demand avoidance” is something that everybody experiences within their life. However, for PDA people this extends to essential demands and may include everyday activities including eating or washing. 🫂 PDA can be seen as an externalised presentation (physical or maybe controlling), or it could be a more internalised response which may leave an individual feeling extremely anxious or withdrawn, or make them “shut down”. For some PDAers, it can depend on the situation. This is known as a “variable presentation”. 📖 Our latest blog explores PDA and includes an interesting insight from @SallyCat who helps us to understand the impact that PDA has on her everyday life. 🔎Take a look at our blog here: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/pda-from-an-adults-perspective/ Pic Credit: Also Sally Cat PDA #PDA #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiv erse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

📚 The thought of attending a school setting can be distressing for some children. For some young people, learning can be a more positive experience when they are not placed in a traditional school setting. 🤩 Although initially they may be tricky to secure, EOTAS packages can allow a child to access education in a low demand environment, with a bespoke curriculum that is built around their individual needs, interests and targets. 🙌 EOTAS allows learning to take place in a setting that a child is more comfortable in, whether this is learning life skills ordering a drink at the local cafe, or counting toys to help develop their Maths skills. 📖 Our latest blog explores EOTAS packages. It includes a brief introduction to the possible route to securing a package, as well as some of the difficulties that may be faced. 🔎Take a look at our blog here: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/eotas-packages-blog/ (https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/eotas-packages-blog/) #EOTAS #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedsparents support #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

😣 Research published in July 2023 suggests that around half of children or young people living in the UK will have experienced traumatic events or adverse experiences. 💭 Mental health charity “Mind” highlight the impact that trauma can have upon mental health, and that this can happen immediately or in later years. 📚 Trauma will likely have an impact on a child’s learning and educational experience. 📖 Our latest blog explores the impact that trauma can have, and how a specialist tutor may be able to support a child through this whilst also creating a trusting relationship. 🔎Take a look at our blog here: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/sensational-tutors-blog-on-trauma/ Pic Credit: Missing the Mark #trauma #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiv erse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

📚In the academic year 2021/22, local authorities estimated that 94,900 children did not receive a formal education. 🤩 For some young people however, a formal setting may not be the most suitable learning environment. An alternative provision has taken some very innovative steps to ensure pupils remain engaged in learning. 🏆Chadsgrove School Support Services Pathways Team in the West Midlands recently won “Alternative Provision of The Year” in the NASEN Awards. As proud sponsors of the award, SENsational Tutors we were so impressed with their work that we wanted to take a visit and experience it for ourselves. 📖 Check out our latest heartwarming Christmas blog about the amazing work they do: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/chadsgrove-school/ #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

🎄Christmas can be magical, but it can also be a challenging time of the year - especially so for children and young people with special needs. 🍫 However, advent calendars and selection boxes mean that it is also a great time to indulge in some festive treats. In fact, it is estimated that the UK alone will share 208 million boxes of chocolate this Christmas! 🎅🏽 We love businesses that support adults with special needs even more than we love chocolate …so when we heard about @parkhousebarns_ , a company that combines the two, we were very excited to visit. 🏡 Parkhouse Barns offers 160 placements every month to local special schools and young adults with disabilities. They also make some delicious chocolate that will be landing on some very special doorsteps as a gift from @SENsationalTutors very soon. 📖 It was a tough job taste-testing the chocolate, but someone had to do it. 😂 To learn more about their enterprise, check out this weeks blog here: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/chocolate-social-enterprise/ #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

✏️ Homeschooling was typically either loved or loathed by parents/carers during the pandemic. 📚However, for many families, particularly for pupils with SEN or previous school trauma, home education can be a positive way to access the curriculum. ‼️ In fact, in figures released this year, The Department for Education stated that more than 86,000 children are currently home-educated in the UK. 🌳 Our latest blog explores how provision can be accessed and implemented outside of a typical school environment and how a homeschooling package may benefit your child. 📖 Check out our blog on homeschooling including EOTAS now: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/homeschooling-eotas-packages/ Pic credit: @littlehandslearninguk 🤫 p.s. 💭Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex autism profile characterised by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands. 🧍‍♀️Individuals with PDA often exhibit high levels of anxiety and struggle with flexibility. Often, it is also important for a person with PDA to feel like they are in control. 🙌 Although PDA is not officially recognised as a separate diagnosis, it is gaining recognition within the autism community. 📕 Our latest blog focuses on the impact of PDA on family life, and we have a very exciting contributor, Steph Curtis @stephstwogirls. Although Steph has been busy focusing on the upcoming release of her new book “PDA in the Family,” Steph took the time to talk to us about her personal experience with PDA and how this reflects upon family life. 📖 Our latest blog is available now: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/family-life-with-pda/ Pic Credit: Sunshine Support #PDA #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #semh #socialemotional #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

The truth about Chronically parenting that no one tells you. It's time to get real, raw and relatable. I was a little hesitant about sharing this but I thought I would invite you into my world. The world of a #chronicillnesswarrior Swipe 👈 Parenting a child with SEN while battling a chronic illness can feel like trying to climb a mountain, blindfolded. Every step is a struggle, but it's also a testament of resilience, love, and sheer determination. The journey is filled with unspeakable challenges, and the truth is, it's not always 'Instagram perfect'. There are sleepless nights, countless hospital visits, and constant worry - but there's also immense joy in every tiny victory. 👦🏻 In the UK, there will be on average at least one child with ADHD in every class. 🔍 ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a condition that affects both children and adults. 5️⃣ In the UK, around 5% of children and 2-3% of adults are estimated to have ADHD. 💭ADHD is not just about being hyperactive, it also affects attention and impulse control. ✍️Drawing on the views of 2,000 UK teachers sought between 2019 and 2020, Pearson’s “Diversity and inclusion in schools” report revealed that four in five (80%) UK teachers believe that more can be done to celebrate diverse cultures, people and experiences in UK education. 💻 Check our new blog to see how easy it can be to make adjustments to promote inclusivity and why these simple changes are so important. https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/why-is-disability-inclusion-important/ #Inclusion #SEN #SpeechandLanguage #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asc #autism #adhd #dyselxia #semh #socialemotional #globaldevelopmentdelay #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen

📑Education, health and care plans (EHCPs) were introduced in 2014 as part of government reforms aimed at improving outcomes for people with SEND. EHCPs are designed to set out how education, health and social care services will work to meet the needs of the child or young person. The assessment can be requested by a parent/carer, a young person with SEND over the age of 16 or a representative from a school/alternative provider. 💻 Check out our new blog, exploring whether an EHCP is always needed in order to access SEN support. https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/is-an-ehcp-always-necessary/ #EHCP #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asd #asc #autism #adhd #dyselxia #semh #socialemotional #traumainformedpractice #globaldevelopmentdelay #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #behaviour #teenagers #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen #PDA

🧩 What is autistic burnout? Autism burnout refers to a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion experienced by individuals on the autism spectrum. It is often caused by prolonged exposure to overwhelming sensory stimuli, social demands, and the need to constantly navigate a world that is not always accommodating to their unique needs. This can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and a reduced ability to cope with everyday tasks and responsibilities. Check out our new blog on autism burnout here: https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/autism-burnout/ #Autism #AutismBurnout #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asd #asc #autism #adhd #dyselxia #semh #socialemotional #traumainformedpractice #globaldevelopmentdelay #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #behaviour #teenagers #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen #PDA

Today Maisy did 5 things that scared her. First she participated in Finn’s training. Then we went to Uproar and she slid down the vertical volcano, which she’s never been able to do before. Then she tried the giant snake slide which is one of those enclosed ones - and loved it. Then she went on one of these trampoline things (pictured) and lastly she walked up to two pirates and had a conversation with them both. So proud.

☀️ It certainly has not felt like "summer" but can you believe we are already halfway through the summer holidays? 📚✏️Transitioning to secondary school is a big change for all pupils, new uniforms, friends, and even a new environment. But for our children with special needs, the thought of all these changes (and more!) can make it a very anxious time! ‼️Check out our new blog on "Transitioning to Secondary School" for tips and ideas, so you can be ready for September. https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/transitioning-to-secondary-school/ #backtoschool #secondaryschool #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asd #asc #autism #adhd #dyselxia #semh #socialemotional #traumainformedpractice #globaldevelopmentdelay #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #behaviour #teenagers #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen #PDA

Practising self care is so important especially when you have a child with SEN, as you spend so much of your time: ⏰Attending appointments 📞Calling various agencies 🗣️Talking to members of staff from school 📑Filling in paperwork People don’t realise it’s like a second job. So prioritise a little bit of you time every day, even if it’s 10mins, as we can’t care for others if we can’t look after ourselves first. #selfcare #sendinstagram #sen #senteachersofinstagram #dyslexia #parentingsen #parentingsensorykids #dyslexiaawareness

🥳 It's National Playday! Play is so important that it underpins the EYFS curriculum within UK settings, with benefits to children including health, well-being and development. Research has also shown that within play, children use more complex language than when compared to ordinary conversation! ❗ #Playday has inspired our new blog - take a look to see how you can use play to support your child with SEN. https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/national-playday/ #playday2023 #playingonashoestring #SEN #SEND #Specialneeds #specialneedseducation #tutoring #mentoring #asd #asc #autism #adhd #dyselxia #semh #socialemotional #traumainformedpractice #globaldevelopmentdelay #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #behaviour #teenagers #communication #specialneedssupport #parentsofspecialneeds #parenting #parentingsen #PDA

✨Time is one of your most important assets once you’ve had children✨ Time with each other. Once it’s gone, you can never get it back. Working with families to capture the essence of their family and the complexities that come with that- beautiful or difficult is up there with one of my favourite things. The selfie thing or self timer-there’s no comparison- sorry- just saying it like it is. They grow so quick- I’m watching it happen in front of me with my own. I need to book a photoshoot myself! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #familyphotographer #familymemories #familyphotographerlondon #perthmumsclub #mumsinbusinessaustralia #australianfamilyphotographer #familyphotographytips #sunsetfamilysession #photographyworkshops #senkids #parentingsen #parentphotographer #photographymentor #businesswomenmum #mumphotographers #beachportraitsession @cat.heaney

✨Advice.✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given for my photography business is this… 'Shoot with intention. Have an idea of exactly what you want to shoot. Then be totally ok if it doesn't go your way. Have the creativity to open yourself to change...' It’s been exactly the same for me when working with kids- Have a plan and then be totally open to it all changing based on their needs. The knack is having experience to feel confident enough to do this. Does your child with SEN love Art? Or do they hate the feel of paint or clay drying on their hands? ✨Tip of the day.✨ Parents and Photographers- Ready for a family portraits tip that will get you excited? Here it is… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⚡️You don't have to pre-plan how the children will be before the shoot. THERES NO SET WAY A CHILD SHOULD ARRIVE OR BEHAVE ON A SHOOT. I just want them to be themselves. ⚡️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve created a download for parents which is coming out next week about how to prepare your child for a shoot. So keep a lookout. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A bit like when I'm in a classroom with a lot of them. I like to see how they turn up and how their mood is at the time, then work with that. It's my job to adapt for the kids. Our job as photographers especially. Let them be themselves, don't stress and we will work with them. It's part of the job.⭐️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What is your number #1 question when it comes to family photography and working with kids? I’d love to share my knowledge with you so ask away! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #neurodiversephotography #familyphotographytips #begginnerphotography #photographyworkshops #senkids #parentingsen #parentphotographer #photographymentor #businesswomenmum #mumphotographers #photographyskills

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-66188156 THIS. I just want my child to have the same opportunities as everybody else. I wanted Zack to attend a summer club, only one/two days a week to keep some routine before school in Sept, to keep him interacting with kids his own age and engaging in different activities, not to mention I'm supposed to be starting my new job over the summer. But I must have called over 10 local care providers (summer clubs and childminders) who are all booked up, some I understand genuinely will be but I can't help but think that when I explain he is Autistic that they are judging him based on negative stereotypes and deciding it's not worth the additional effort he may need. I am not restricted by only those who accept government funded hours or anything, but my money isn't good enough apparently. I'm also not going to leave him somewhere I'm not 💯 happy with so i shouldn't have to go with the only provider that's 'willing' to have him (which at present isn't anyone). It's ridiculous. My boy is such a beautiful soul but some can't see beyond the label and the negative misconceptions that go with it. I'm feeling really deflated, upset and angry. I am convinced this would not be an issue if he wasn't SEN. #senchildcare #notautismfriendly #senhelp #nosupport #autismawareness #parentingsen #childcareisahumanright #discrimination #differentnotless #negativestereotypes #equalityfordisabilities

Life Coaching and SEN? Check out our recent blog by visiting the blog page on our website.... https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/life-coaching-and-support-for-sen-families/ If you’ve already come across the concept of ‘life coaching’, you might associate it with high-flying business people looking for encouragement as they scale the corporate ladder, or perhaps athletes who want to ‘push through’ and achieve sporting excellence. Although it’s true that coaching is often used in these scenarios, in reality, it can be applied to any situation or goal, no matter how big, small or unusual. Parenting a child with suspected PDA (awaiting diagnosis), has taught me patience beyond anything I knew was possible. Jamie and I have adjusted every single parenting style we thought we would have and have now accepted that we are not the boss 😂 All jokes aside, understanding PDA more helps us to understand why Alfie struggles so much with certain situations and what we can do to help him. If you think your child has a PDA profile, then you should raise this with your health visitor or other relevant professionals. In this week's blog we celebrate 'Learning Disability Week 2023' #LDWeek and is all about dispelling myths. At SENsational Tutors we have started off our blog by discussing the differences between some of the SEND terminology. How much of it did you know? Crucially, many of us confuse learning ‘difficulties’ with learning ‘disabilities’. This might be because some conditions – such as dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia or autism – are officially recognised as disabilities though in the field of education, they are defined as difficulties that get in the way of a person’s ability to acquire new skills. A learning disability, on the other hand, suggests that a person has some level of cognitive impairment which makes all aspects of life more challenging. Down’s syndrome would be an example of this. Go to our website to read more... Link in bio. Thank you to @mencap and Rosie Creer, Clinical Director with the charity Respond. Remember the thrill of getting pocket money as a child and splurging it on something completely frivolous such as three bags of jelly babies or purple, sparkly nail varnish? This week our blog supports Action for Brain Injury Week. It’s often the case that people who work with children with special needs have some personal experience with SEN themselves. It may be that they have family members with a condition like autism or dyslexia, for example, or perhaps they have friends with hearing impairment or cerebral palsy. Seeing at close-quarters how people struggle with differences and disabilities can be part of the reason they want to work in this field and support others. This was the case for one of our tutors, Elizabeth Dun and we thank her for contributing to the blog so openly and honestly about her own personal experiences. https://www.sensationaltutors.co.uk/head-injury-awareness-week-may-16-22/. Our other contributor the Child Brain Injury Trust @cbituk run workshops for parents and professionals and can mediate between schools and families to ensure a child with brain injury is properly supported in the classroom. Many of us take our ability to speak for granted, only stopping to consider how useful this is when a sore throat or toothache makes it tricky for a short while.
