Day 18 - 2024-05-28 Crappy night. The sea state pick up to quite a confused state. . The washing machine is on at 2000RPMs, a few naughty waves have splashed over the broadsides sending a rain of seawater all over the boat. Glad we sail with our campervan tent on otherwise we would have been soaked. John still got a bit wet from water that passed through the mesh material. . This morning things got a bit more hectic, according to the forecast the winds should have dropped from the 25-27 knot gusts to around 20. That would have been nice but it was as real as the night forecast that sound have gotten only to 22 not the 26-29 we got. So in good fashion of incorrect forecasts we had 34 knot gusts this morning. . It’s not the wind it’s the sea state. . Day 17 - 2024-05-27 I don’t like red, I don’t like orange. Maybe yellow, I definitely like green. I also don’t like blue. . The next 48h is definitely red, maybe orange… . Today’s swell was already quite annoying, due to the current we are sailing heading East to get that beautiful yellow thumb line that runs to Northeast towards our destination. . You see, that puts the Apparent Wind Angle on 100-110 degrees (sweet) but the swell kind of up our bum making us move like a drunken sailor. . Todays forecast was already wrong by about 5knots, let’s not keep this new trend and follow the previous one when we had 5 knots less than forecasted. Now, that would allow to the let the ponies go at their will without us being lurched out of comfortable seats every other minute. . Usually, I wouldn’t be so pesky about this but we are quite sleep deprived and the forecast models and the weather are not playing nicely. . When I was booking accomodations I always considered what would be nearby that would be scenic enough for me to explore while my family slept --- knowing that there would be long days and I'd have more motivation than the rest of them to get up early and stay out late. In Iceland, I decided to book a little cabin, not too far from the airport, but otherwise in the middle of nowhere. The cabin was close to the ocean and I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to walk up and down the coast. And being west-facing over the north Atlantic, I could expect some beautiful sunsets. I didn't factor in the weather. The majority of the time we were in Iceland was cloudy, rainy, and extremely windy and cold. But I lucked out with one amazing stormy sunset! This was at 11pm. And while it looks peaceful and picturesque, this photo almost didn't happen because it was so miserable battling the wind to even get to the shore. I could barely walk against the wind and holding a camera steady was a challenge. The extremely curious thing is that there were no waves. I was right at the shore and the waves were non-existent despite the strong winds. The next day it was the same -- windy and stormy and there were a few white-caps out in the water but no waves crashing on the beach. I don't have an explanation for this, only a few weak guesses. Maybe we just happened to be on the side of the peninsula with less waves -- this seems likely because the south coast is known for its dangerous waves but we were in the northern corner of the peninsula. Or, perhaps the tide was going out and bringing the water away from the shore faster than the wind would have blown it back in -- maybe those forces cancelled each other out. If anyone knows anything about why there weren't any waves I'd love to know more. My experience on the westcoast of Vancouver Island has always been of pounding waves along the shore. This was just another thing about Iceland that seemed strange, eerie almost, like nothing about the landscape was familliar. #iceland #northatlanticocean #keflavik #reykjavik #travelphotography

Sometimes, we need to stop, breathe deeply, and only then can we begin again. For me, that's what this week is all about. Rather than show you what I've been making for you, or any of the regular content you're used to, I decided that I would do something different and post a picture a day from the retreat I'm on. I'm attending The Salty Quill, a retreat for women writers, on an island off the coast of Maine (in the US). The island is private - the only year round resident is the caretaker - and there is myself and 11 other women working in companionable quiet. Yesterday, the full scope of this opportunity hit me when I realised that I have no demands. Nothing to tend to but my own spirit. Nothing to plan, no personalities to plan around or for. The food is prepared for us, and the cleanup is taken care of. You can see the shock on most of the women's faces here, as it was on my own, when the full gravity of that hit us. None of us have ever had the experience of time truly all our own and it feels like a divine gift. We're all stunned when we realise, as one attendee put it this morning, that we can wake up and continue with the thought we left off on paper last night. We are being allowed to be and already, I can feel the shift in my mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. I'm taking this time to reset, regroup, and start working on my own book and oracle deck. For this week, I have all of the time in the world to do so - and I think that, when these projects are complete, you'll be able to see what a difference that makes. I *really* enjoyed Beavertail State Park in Conanicut Island, Rhode Island (island-ception?). This was my first time having cannoli, which I believe was from Pastiche Fine Desserts, so we made it a whole picnic at this state park. I had a lot of fun exploring, climbing on the rocks, and watching the Atlantic. Brand new stormsail fitted to the cutterstay! During my last stormy journey across the North Sea, winds gusted up to 50 knots. I rolled out some of the genoa, but that is a bad solution as the powers are high up on the forestay, and way forward on the bow. This resaulted in a lot of broaches, and the boat gets hard to keep on course during the big crashing swells or scutters. A cutterstay stormjib makes the power hit lower and closer to the mast, wich makes the boat better to handle. Wind between 40-60 AWA (apparent wind angle) to keep a rumb line towards our destination as much as possible. Wind between 6-10 true wind and that’s all we need. Plotting along at 6-7 knots without much fuss and there’s still room for more fine tune of the trimming if we wanted to. . And that’s why you buy a performance cruiser. Il primo è la Stanza degli Ospiti ( numero “2️⃣” della mappa esposta nel post precedente ) . Fu costruita nel lontano 1841 . Nel mese di agosto di quell’anno il poeta Jónas Hallgrimsson era ospite di Glaumbaer , e soggiornò proprio in questa stanza . I was surprised how enchanting the Orkney Island beaches in Scotland were! They looked more like turquoise tropical beaches (sans the warm weather) than I imagined. Being raised in the Pacific Northwest, I’m used to cold, and a different type of beautiful, rocky beaches. This is the bay just over the grass ridge from Skara Brae. This side of Orkney Island, on the North Atlantic Ocean, can be wild. And during one wild storm in 1850, the ocean unveiled one of the most well preserved Neolithic villages, Skara Brae. I decided to have breakfast as my main meal on summer holiday day 10 of 106. After that, I attended the “A City in the Sea” presentation, which was a nice program explaining how everything works on a cruise ship. The program concluded with a crew parade. I jogged one hour on the treadmill today (6.66 miles—I never have denied that I have the devil in me—or 10.72 kilometers)! Before the evening show, Cruise and Travel Director Daniel shared some information on Cobh, Ireland, our port tomorrow. As our first European port, we will have to complete immigration clearance in the morning. The evening show was “It Takes Two,” a show of “dynamic duets” performed by two of the four singers and the four dancers from the Grand World Voyage who are completing their contract. I suspect this show might have been adjusted a bit to compensate for the lack of the other two singers because there were several solos and it was a shorter-than-usual show. The vocal performances were great. This show had more costume changes than the other three shows. So far this passage is going to our records as the longest and slowest (thanks to the wind gods) . A questo punto interrompo , rimandandole per il momento , ulteriori vedute sulla Fattoria di Glaumbaer , iniziando a descriverne gli interessanti interni : Dall’entrata e sino al soggiorno si stende un corridoio ( numero “1️⃣” su mappa di foto “4” ) , di circa 20 metri di lunghezza , dal quale si aprono su entrambi i lati tutte le stanze principali della Fattoria . All’inizio dello stesso si trova una doppia porta che , formando un’intercapedine , evita l’entrata del freddo dal portone sino alle stanze ; il corridoio era illuminato da lampade alimentate con olio di balena 🐳 , che venivano accese nelle grandi occasioni e nelle feste religiose . In foto “3 e 4” , le mappe dell’esterno e dell’interno della Fattoria con i “numeri” indicanti i vari locali , da usarsi come guida perché possiate comprendere meglio , nei prossimi post , la posizione degli stessi ❗️ Buona visione 👁️😊.
