Spring vegetable gardens are gorgeously green, so this overwintered chard really stands out. It does not always survive winter so well as this, and I’m celebrating that it has, then soon it will go to seed, and if you have eight or 10 plants together, you could save seeds by August. I did that in 2022 and the results have been incredible, so much more vigour in the new plantings, which include these ones. We put in a lovely native plant garden today for our client @parkside_hotel. The photos are after/before. The last photo is where we removed the Rhodo from our previous post. We enjoyed grabbing most of these plants from the sale at @swanlakenature. We transplanted a large Rhodo and Cornus out of the front of the bed. We also decided to make a path spur of the moment so these precious plants don’t get stepped on. This path will make maintenance easier and allow access to the irrigation box. There’s such a beautiful & complex balance to strike in the vineyard between age & renewal ⚖️ Of course, no vineyard or vine (or winery!) ever stands still, so while we’re always watching over our magnificent older vines, we’re constantly looking to the future as well 🔍😀 Which is why … we’ve been really busy lately preparing soil, sizing up the weather & then jumping into action to plant more than 4,000 new Riesling “babies” over 45 rows. 🌱💚 Many were planted on the contours of our estate - a painstaking & precise job & an increasingly rare skill, but great for erosion prevention on the slopes of this iconic landscape. 💛 Now it’s all about shepherding these little treasures through the hot months ahead and, all going well, harvesting fruit in 2026. Squirrels are a menace to gardeners all over town. The numerous invasive Fox squirrels and Eastern Grey Squirrels dig frenetically in gardens, tearing out native plants. The most important time to consider managing squirrels is in new plantings where there is soft soil (especially in the fall!); they are less of a concern to more established gardens. Here are some ways to reduce damage to your garden by squirrels: 1️⃣Coffee grounds: after your morning coffee, sprinkle the grounds around your plants every day to once every few days depending on activity. 2️⃣Plantskydd: use this organic animal repellent that comes in granules (this can also be used for protection against voles, rabbits, and deer) It only needs to be spread every 6-8 weeks. We started using @plantskyddrepellents this fall which works well. 3️⃣Fencing: For most perennials and potted plants, put wire fencing around and over them or use cages. For bulbs and other dormant plants, place chicken wire or other wire fencing on top of the soil and secure it with landscape staples. Also, skewers can be pushed deeply into the ground around plants or by each bulb while planting . Lastly, don’t feed the squirrels, and be sure to use bird feeders that keep squirrels out! Note - there are native squirrels in the PNW, such as the Western gray squirrels, Douglas squirrels, and Townsend’s chipmunk, but native squirrels are very uncommon in Portland.
