In the last few days, we all finally managed to spend more time outside and get our fill of Vitamin D! Vitamin D is essential for good bone health and development. -Sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D,(it provides 95% of the vitamin D required for healthy bone growth) although precautions should be taken during peak UV radiation hours to avoid sunburn. -Vitamin D can also be obtained from dietary sources. Oily fish such as sardines, pilchards, mackerel, salmon, and fresh tuna are the richest sources, although small amounts are also found in eggs and meat. Some breakfast cereals, margarines and yoghurts are fortified with vitamin D. Food, however, only contributes about 10% of the body’s vitamin D requirement. -A daily vitamin D supplement can help avoid deficiency in pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers and babies during the winter months. Infant formula is also fortified with Vitamin D and will benefit those babies having above 500ml of formula milk per day.
