I’ve recently fallen in love with this quote from @michaelwear . Why? Because of its convicting nuance. It is easy for Christians, myself included, to look at the public life of America and see how messed up it appears. It’s easy to point fingers at people who believe differently than us and assert that they are the problem. How often, though, do we find ourselves recognizing that the very divisiveness found in the public sphere of America is the same divisiveness that causes us to point fingers at other people? How often do we reflect on the state of our own souls and attempt to see how we contribute to the issues around us? If this quote is true, which I believe it is, then the very issues we identify around us not only shape our souls but they are indicative of our souls, whether we recognize it or not. May we take this as both an invitation and a warning to be engaged with public life and to check ourselves before condemning others. Compassion (&) Conviction is a thoughtful consideration of how faith can inform one’s civic engagement, framed around the essential questions, “How am I loving my neighbor?” and “How am I pursuing justice?” The question of political and civic engagement is a tricky one with a myriad of answers. I engaged with a small group of people in a book study last month of Compassion (&) Conviction, coordinated by @inthecoracle. We did not all come from the same place or have the same opinions – either amongst ourselves or in relation to the authors of the book – but we were able to have an honest and considerate dialogue, which I am so very thankful for. One of the many joys and challenges of being human is our uniqueness – we are not all called to think the same way about the same thing, and that’s okay. Happy Election Day to my friends in America!
