Areas with no maternal healthcare, sometimes called “maternity care deserts,” put pregnant people at increased risk of dangerous, and even deadly, pregnancy complications like maternal sepsis. They often make it harder for patients to begin receiving treatment quickly, and, in some cases, a long drive might discourage a patient from going to their doctor or make it impossible to seek treatment at all. We’re committed to improving outcomes for people who develop sepsis during or following a pregnancy, so that more survive pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. To learn more about the problem of maternity care deserts, how they relate to maternal sepsis, and how pregnant patients can identify the signs and symptoms, visit MaternalSepsisWeek.org.

#MaternalSepsisAwareness According to the World Health Organization, maternal sepsis refers to sepsis that results “from infection during pregnancy, childbirth, post-abortion, or the postpartum period.” Sepsis, which was often called blood poisoning, is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection. Like strokes or heart attacks, sepsis is a medical emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. Sepsis kills and disables millions, more than breast cancer, lung cancer, and stroke combined. #draxhallmedicalandsurgical #maternalsepsis #maternalsepsisweek “Where precision meets care!” Call/Text/DM us to book your appointment today! 📞 Landline: 876-972-0514 📱WhatsApp/Call: 876-236-5215 📧 Email: [email protected] 📍Shop 14, Knutsford Express Business Centre, 12 Drax Hall Estate, St Ann, Jamaica.

HSE encourages people to ask “could it be sepsis?” Maternal sepsis – a life-threatening condition – that develops during pregnancy, childbirth, or in the months following childbirth. Signs and symptoms of sepsis in adults (including maternity) S - Slurred speech, new confusion, too sick to communicate, drowsiness. E - Extreme shivering, muscle aches, fever. P - Has not passed urine in the last 12 hours and does not feel like passing urine. S - Shortness of breath, lips tinged with blue, feels like your heart is racing, dizzy when you sit or stand. I - I feel like I'm going to die. S - Skin mottled and discoloured, new rash that is still visible when pressed on with a clear glass (glass test) What is Sepsis? Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to infection is so severe that it can lead to organ failure. It is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention and treatment. Sepsis can result from infections in various parts of the body, such as the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, or skin. The immune system typically responds to an infection by releasing chemicals into the bloodstream to fight the invading organisms. In sepsis, this immune response becomes dysregulated, leading to widespread inflammation throughout the body. The inflammation can cause a cascade of changes that may damage multiple organ systems, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver. Sepsis is a medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention. Early recognition and prompt treatment with antibiotics and other supportive measures are crucial to improving outcomes. In severe cases, patients may need intensive care, including mechanical ventilation and medications to support blood pressure. It's important for individuals to seek medical attention if they suspect they have an infection that is worsening. Happy birthday Rylee! 🎈🎊🎁🎂 11 years ago today at 9:05am this sweet young lady was born 6 weeks early. The amazing people that took care of us and the journey she and I started on are some of the biggest reasons I became an RN. 💕This little lady inspires me! I was noticing where I live DOES NOT HAVE ANY recognition for Black Maternal Health Week. Do you know if your city has proclaimed, and recognizes & supports Black Maternal Health Week? April 11- 17th is recognized as Black Maternal Health week. Held annually, BMHW is a week-long campaign founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black Mamas. I recently lost my sister, Krystal Anderson, to Maternal Sepsis this March. This unfair & unfathomable tragedy has brought my awareness to the RISING Maternal Mortality Rate in the United States. The numbers show it has been long over due, to bring awareness and advocate for maternal health. Especailly Black Mothers in our community and country. 60% of Maternal Deaths ARE PREVENTABLE. Black mothers are at 3x the risk of losing THEIR LIFE. This is unacceptable. We need to advocate for change. My sister @withjoykrystal will not just be apart of another statistic of black mothers who should still be here. Black Mothers deserve to be protected. They deserve to go home to their families. Krystal would want me to stand up with my brother @thatclaytonguy , for her & their babies. And all the future mamas at risk. Support Black Maternal Health week. Though sepsis does affect the general population , due to nature of immune changes in pregnancy, UTI’s, procedures or surgery, gestational diabetes and premature rupture of membranes, pregnancy posses a higher risk for sepsis. What an honor to photograph @mikaelashiffrin and her mom, Eileen for @theb.berkshires including the cover. This happened to be my first assignment back postpartum. I was in rough shape, only a week out from being hospitalized, including emergency surgery and an ICU stay for maternal sepsis. What a way to dip my toes back into work, which for me can be really restorative. Especially so, when I had the pleasure of working with a small team of wonderfully talented women, putting this special issue together, who also totally got where I was at postpartum. Let’s just top it off with the theme of the issue being about the strength of women. Thanks, universe!

Why life Coaching? The only thing I ever knew I wanted to do was sing...I did that and was fortunate enough to have an incredible writing partner and an amazing band...that was my dream. Being on stage allowed me to be myself, I didn't have to hide or be someone that I wasn't. Coming from such a difficult background came with lots of baggage and even now the trauma left from that life lives with me, I am not always the master of the emotions that go with it...when the band stopped I was lost and had no idea " what to be" or do. I stumbled my way through corporate roles which I was good at, but never quite fit...something was always missing, the problem was the money was great and the stability it gave me was important, but it didn't work....in 2020 I nearly died from maternal sepsis and devastatingly has to deliver my baby at 16 weeks. I was broken and had no idea how I would ever heal from that experience. I took a new job a few months later, and during that time, I realised that I loved to help people, to watch them grow, find their happy ❤️ I knew long term I'd like to be a psychotherapist but wanted to do something in the interim where I could make a difference and that's where life coaching came in. It just made sense. Who doesn't need help? Life is so hard sometimes and time is so precious. What do you need? Where do you want to be? Let me help you get there. #lifecoaching #babyloss #maternalsepsis #helpingwomen

Maternal sepsis is a serious and life-threatening condition that can occur during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period. It is caused by an infection that spreads to the blood, and it can lead to organ failure and death if it is not treated promptly. Symptoms of maternal sepsis can include fever, chills, rapid breathing, confusion, and low blood pressure. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. **Maternal sepsis is preventable. There are a number of things that can be done to reduce the risk of maternal sepsis, including: Getting vaccinated against the flu and pneumonia Getting early prenatal care Managing chronic health conditions Avoiding infections during pregnancy Having a healthy diet and staying hydrated Getting enough rest If you are pregnant, it is important to talk to your doctor about the risks of maternal sepsis and how to prevent it. #maternalsepsis #preventmaternalsepsis #sepsisawareness #sepsismonth #worldsepsisday

What is sepsis? Sepsis is a complication of a severe infection. When the immune system fights the infection, sepsis sees the body go too far and start to attack organs and other tissues. When it occurs in pregnant women or within six weeks after giving birth, it’s called maternal or postpartum sepsis. Without quick treatment, sepsis can lead to multiple organ failure and death. #MaternalSepsis What are the signs and symptoms of sepsis? 1.High temperature or fever over 38°C. 2 Low body temperature. 3 Fast heartbeat. 4 Chills and shivering. 5 Severe muscle, abdominal or chest pain. 6 Feeling dizzy or faint. 7 Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting. 8 Abnormal or unpleasant vaginal discharge. 9 Productive cough. 10 Symptoms of a urinary tract infection. 11 Acting confused or slurring speech. 12 Skin feels cold or clammy. Skin can be paler than normal, or mottled with lighter patches on dark skin, or with red on light skin. A rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it (similar to meningitis). Difficulty breathing, breathlessness or breathing very fast. Loss of consciousness. #maternalmentalhealth #maternal2 #maternal1 #maternalhealth #MaternalMentalHealthMonth #maternalmentalhealthawareness #maternal #maternaldisaster #maternalmhmatters #maternalmentalhealthweek #maternalmentalhealthawarenessweek #maternalsepsis #maternalsepsisweek #maternalsepsisstory #maternalsepsisawareness #maternalsepsisday Krishna Hospital Chittoor/MG Road,Ernakulam Kochi.
