Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of new moms, with Black women often hit the hardest. As a Maternal Health Advocate, I’m passionate about raising awareness on this critical issue. Through the American Heart Association’s partnership with Miss America, I’ve learned the immense importance of heart health. We can take preventive measures to improve health outcomes for women before, during, and after childbirth, reducing risks for conditions like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes. Heart disease is not only the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., but, similar to maternal mortality, the rates are disproportionately worse for Black women and women of color. As the next Miss DC, the core of my work will be raising awareness for health equity. I’m excited that my role as a health equity fellow working at the U.S. House of Representatives allows me to be involved in policy change conversations through #NationofLifesavers. The #AccesstoAEDs Act and HEARTS Act will help schools to: ❤️ Buy AEDs ❤️ Develop cardiac emergency response plans ❤️ Train students, staff, and coaches to respond in a cardiac emergency Let’s spread awareness and take action to protect our health! #MaternalHealth #HeartHealth #GoRedForWomen #MissAmerica #BMHW24 #HealthEquity #PreventiveCare #WomensHealth #NationofLifesavers #MissCapitolHill #MissCapitolHillDC #MissDC

As Black Maternal Health Week ended, Bethany Johnson-Javois, CEO of the Deaconess Foundation, penned an article for the St. Louis American, reminding us that the work of raising awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black mamas and birthing people continues. In her article, Bethany highlights IHN’s EleVATE Collaborative. EleVATE stands for Elevating Voices, Addressing Depression, Toxic Stress, and Equity. It is a collaborative partnership with community health centers, academic medical centers, hospitals, community-based organizations, and community collaborators. EleVATE focuses on group prenatal care, healthcare team training, coaching and technical assistance, and healthcare system policy transformation to eliminate racial inequities for birthing people and their babies. Thank you to Bethany and the St. Louis American for continuing to shine a light on the issues that Black birthing people face and for featuring the work of the EleVATE Collaborative. I Became A Doula At 12 Years Old The moment I watched my mom silently weep in her hiding spot - from, mine. The moment I realized my Mother was in crisis. The moment my Mother, riddled with postpartum psychosis, took us kids into the kitchen, oven open, doors closed - a makeshift escape chamber - waiting patiently to shut the chamber down, open the kitchen door - Deep breaths of fresh air. The moment I pulled my siblings from the kitchen. The moment I put my Mother - and her Pain - to bed, with Love. The moment I saw Parenthood is one of the most complex life moves on the planet. And I'll remain a Doula... to educate, to normalize, to speak on, to love on, to care for, to observe, to support, to advocate for, to protect.... the parents & children like my mother & myself. "During the postpartum period, about 85% of women experience some type of mood disturbance. For most the symptoms are mild and short-lived; however, 10 to 15% of women develop more significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. Postpartum psychiatric illness is typically divided into three categories: (1) postpartum blues (2) postpartum depression and (3) postpartum psychosis. It may be useful to conceptualize these disorders as existing along a continuum, where postpartum blues is the mildest and postpartum psychosis the most severe form of postpartum psychiatric illness". [MGH Center for Women's Mental Health] • Here are some mental health reminders for Your Postpartum period. Though there is so much more to this topic - it's nice to have a reminder of a few. Be sure to check in with others and your care team of experiencing postpartum symptoms that are alarming on ANY way. May is dedicated to Maternal Mental Health Awareness, in the birthwork world. As a Doula - this area of care is most important to me. This area of care - the mind, the heart, the psyche - is what is undervalued and missed in Maternal care, with drastic and sometimes fatal consequences. I say Enough. Your mental health matters, and you deserve to know and understand the many changes and fluctuations experienced in pregnancy, postpartum & parenting. Here are 5 basic reminders to protect your peace while pregnant. Remember - it's OKAY to not enjoy pregnancy. We aren't all built the same. And that's okay. Two weeks after giving birth to her son JoJo, Naiya had a heart attack. It had been caused by what's known as a spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or SCAD. She underwent a procedure to correct the repair, but while she was in the ICU recovering, her heart stopped. A defibrillator brought her back. She got medication to help her blood pump more efficiently and went home with a defibrillator vest. But her heart still struggled. Eventually, she went on the transplant list. Naiya spent JoJo's first Christmas in the hospital waiting for a new heart. She thought of the big picture, that missing this one meant she would be with him for many more. Less than a week into the new year, her doctor called. "Naiya, I found you a heart." Tears flowed down her cheeks. She had the transplant the next day. After three weeks of physical therapy and nearly a year after her heart attack, Naiya went home to JoJo the day before his first birthday. "I'm still in the journey," Naiya said. "But I'm in good spirits. I have a different mindset now. I know not everything is going to go as planned. But I am looking forward to getting back to work and the day-to-day." #BMHW24 #BlackMaternalHealth @MaternalHealth #HeartTransplant #SCAD #Survivor

It’s so important to listen to black women!!! April 11th through 17th was #blackmaternalhealthweek . Finally sharing the @ebonymagazine October 2008 article that I was featured in. 🤎 Tyler Perry was on the cover! It makes me very emotional to reflect on my NICU journey. Thank you God for pulling me through!! 🙌🏾 I love you Mommy. 😘 @gurlwitgreeneyes_ Thank you to the team at @cedarssinai for providing the best care for my mom, my brother, and I. I’m so blessed to have an incredible medical team!! 110 days in the NICU with 2 major surgeries. The outcome could’ve been very different. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. Infant mortality rates among black babies are almost two times higher than the national average. It’s so important to listen to black women when we’re in pain!!! Black women, make sure there’s black healthcare providers on your team!! Whether that’s your OBGYN, a doula, or a midwife. Your partner is your best advocate. This is one of the many reasons I want to become a Lactation Consultant. There’s a lack of diversity in the Lactation field. I can’t wait to help mamas, especially black mamas. 💗 I’m ready to do my part in dismantling the systematic racism in healthcare, specifically in obstetrics. Black doctors and nurses are necessary!! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make the "Centering Joy in the Black Birthing Experience" Conference a resounding success! On April 12 &13, 2024, in observance and celebration of Black Maternal Health Week, we came together at the Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing to celebrate Black Joy in Birth and explore groundbreaking solutions. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors: Missouri Perinatal Quality Collaborative, BJC Healthcare, Missouri Foundation for Health, SSM Health, Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services, Happiest Baby, Mercy Hospital, and Goldfarb School of Nursing. Your commitment to this cause is truly inspiring! A special shoutout to our partners, the National and Greater St. Louis Black Nurses Association, our event coordinators, Charity Bean and LaShanda Jackson, who led the planning for the event, as well as all the community organizations who put the hard work into making this event a success. Together, we're helping to raise awareness, dismantle systemic racism, improve healthcare access, tackle social determinants of health, and amplify the voices and experiences of Black mothers and birthing people. Thank you to all the attendees, speakers, volunteers, and everyone who contributed their time, energy, and expertise. Your passion and dedication made this event truly unforgettable! A study in 2016 showed that ‘a substantial number of white laypeople and medical students and residents hold false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites and demonstrates that these beliefs predict racial bias in pain perception and treatment recommendation’ To summarise many medical professionals beleive that black people feel pain more than white people and therefore are less likely to beleive they need medical assistance and offer them treatment. This is one of the reasons black mothers in the UK are five times more likely to die in childbirth than their white counterparts. Institutional racism. As textbooks are amended it will take a much longer time to reverse the damage these untrue statements have done and continue to be done. Last week was Black Maternal health week, I missed posting due to some personal things, but honestly, this doesn’t go away just because the week is over! #bmhw24 #blackmamasmatter #blackmaternalhealthweek #reprojustice

Still feeling invigorated by the connections and fellowship we experienced during #BMHW24. Being amongst great women doing amazing things for birthing families was the icing on the cake. Another year and the impact grows by so many families and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of their village. Until we meet again….

Mama T was absolutely thrilled to join the panel at the Brooklyn Birth Equity Expo, hosted by @ancientsong during Black Maternal Health Week 2024. Discussing how to empower Black children in educational settings with such passionate panelists was nothing short of inspiring. The panel was a vital platform to talk about making childcare more equitable and accessible. The community’s response was amazing, showing just how crucial these conversations are. 🌟 A massive thank you to everyone who put this event together and to all of you who came out to support and engage. ♥️ #BrooklynBirthEquityExpo #BlackMaternalHealth #BMHW24 #BirthEquity #CommunityImpact #ancientsongdoulaservices #ChildcareEquity

Our focus at Harvest Home remains steadfast on supporting mothers when their precious babies are released from the hospital. We understand that bringing a newborn home can be overwhelming for any mom, and it's especially challenging when a baby has faced some early obstacles. That's why we're here to provide the extra hands, resources, and support needed to navigate this journey with confidence and peace of mind. From classes in infant care to transportation assistance for visits, we're committed to ensuring that every mother has access to the tools and knowledge she needs to thrive. Additionally, our therapy services offer vital support for managing stress, anxiety, and fear during this critical time. We believe that no mother should have to face these challenges alone. Together, we're empowering mothers to embrace motherhood with strength, resilience, and unwavering support. We are grateful to be working in collaboration with Anthem Blue Cross to continue to address and bring awareness to black maternal health. . . . . . . #HarvestHomeLA #WhereNewLivesBegin #BMHW24 #nonprofit #charity #community #helpingothers #nonprofitsofinstagram #bethechange #nonprofitlife #goals #blackmaternalhealthweek

#bmhw24 has been a busy ride for @daddoulauniversity . A week of panels, discussions with officials, a keynote and some new partnerships . . I am thankful for the privilege to use my voice as an accomplice in maternal health. We often do this work without looking for or even expecting to be seen, but @wisconsindoulasofcolor saw me when I didn’t know anyone was watching. . They found me fit to be called not just a doula/o but also giving me most innovative doula/o award for @daddoulauniversity . . I’m not just humbled , and honors but energized to keep doing this work for the success of maternal outcomes changing . . Thank you @wisconsindoulasofcolor for seeing me, accepting me, and encouraging me to keep up the fight . I am so honored you thought of me. . Today we are shinning a light on the disparity in maternal outcomes for Black women and birthing people. In the UK, they are 4 times more likely to die in pregnancy, birth and 6 weeks after. We fully support #BMHW24, campaigning to improve outcomes for Black mothers and birthing people
