This was my seventh in-person @skinnyravensports Twilight 12K and 6K event, but this year I ran the 6K. I had signed up for the 12K, but then rolled my ankle earlier in the week... it feels much better, but I knew attempting the 12K would be pushing it. I finished my ninth ever @goldnuggettriathlon today!!! This was the first race I did when I moved back to Alaska. It holds a special place in my heart. I didn't get a PR this year, but that's okay. What I love about this event is all the amazing women who get out there and do their best! We support each other before, during, and after the race. I loved seeing so many of my friends doing this race for the first time and getting to share in this joy. I love seeing people succeed! My second ever @uaa_skiwolves Turnagain Arm Trail Run! Since this year is an even year, we started from Rainbow Trailhead and ended at Potter Creek Trailhead. I did the 8-miler so I could try the opposite route from last year. It was raining before we started and quite cold. Thank you @lindyb86 for driving us to the start and keeping us warm in your car. You are the best!!! The rain turned into snow ❄️ I was surprised how long it snowed during the race! Due to all the extra water on the trail, I tripped during the first quarter mile and scraped my knee. Thankfully that didn't stop me from finishing the race. I was surprised when I got to the steep part right before approaching McHugh because it was the first time I went down and it wasn't windy! I got pretty muddy, but that's how it goes! My eighth Bike 4 Women! It was my second fastest time for this race ☺️ This year I sported my Dear Daniel jersey. I did not sport my usual pink, but instead wore blue to honor Diane Mohwinkel's memory. Here is what the organizers said in our email: "Many in our cycling (and triathlon) community know, but beloved Diane Mohwinkel passed away recently. She was a vibrant, inspiring friend and an avid racer. We will commemorate Diane at 9:30 a.m. on race day. In addition, we encourage you to wear blue that she was known for: nails, eyeshadow, jerseys, glitter, you pick. She may be gone but her tenacity and good attitude will continue to inspire us." My second ever @matsurunningclub Valley Thaw Out Half Marathon. We were very excited for this amazing weather we had! I went into this race not knowing how I'd do. I know you can't PR every race and as I get older, I realize I may need to focus on other goals. As I started the race, I could feel that I'd be slower than last year. But what I didn't expect is how hard this race would be... my feet started hurting and I kept getting slower throughout... I was a total of 20 minutes slower than last year. This was my second slowest road half marathon... I haven't been this slow since 2021. I have to be honest, I was very disappointed (and still am). I went through all these factors in my head of what caused me to be slower. - Last year I was marathon-training, so I was probably finding longer runs easier back then. - I haven't been on a regular training schedule recently and really fell off since finishing my marathon in June of 2023. Even without marathon training specifically, I had a hard time getting back into a routine. - As a result of my lack of consistent training (and some bad eating habits), I've gained weight. I know the number on the scale shouldn't bother me, but when I can't wear certain clothes, it does bother me. I enjoyed the beautiful views and loved being able to race with so many wonderful friends. I'm trying to focus on that aspect as best as I can. I'm happy I finished the race, it just feels different this time around. I'm still having a hard time with this feeling that I went backwards on my progress as a runner. ✅ Last Half Marathon of 2023! I tried to run a half marathon every month like I had the last 2 years. I missed November, so I was determined to get it done for December! Thank you @moosen24 for running with me, you made it more fun and kept me moving! The snow made it so much tougher, took us about 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete. My legs are shot! You can also see how much snow caked into my hair 🤣 Even though I missed November, I managed to complete 17 half marathons and one marathon this year 😁 Of these 17 half marathons, seven were official half marathon races, one was an event where you ran as many laps as you could in 8 hours, one was a 16-mile trail race, one was a leg in a relay race, and seven were on my own or with friends. The marathon training in the first half of the year definitely helped increase my total! On Saturday, November 11, I got to model in the @skinnyravensports Winter Fashion Show! I was selected as one of the community members to show off their new winter looks. I finished my second ever Girdwood Half Marathon! This time, we completed the course in the counterclockwise direction. ✅ Seventeenth half marathon of 2023 Same as last year, I wore a @happyak907 headband, but with a new Girdwood design. I also wore my other pair of @megsmith.art.design mountain leggings 🏔 We had to climb a bit before we could do the couple miles of downhill, then it was mostly flat on roads and easy trails. I remembered the elevation in the middle from last year, so I was prepared to hike at a good pace. After that, the long amount of downhill was so nice! I thought the last few miles of the race would be easy since it was all flat with a gradual ascent at the end, but my feet were so sore, that's where I really slowed down. The counterclockwise course felt easier than last year, but I definitely need practice on how to keep my pace up when I'm tired 😅 I'm glad I could do this race with @nan.lutton and @omalleyandme , you both totally rocked it! This was my very first @equinoxmarathon Half Marathon! This was yet another race that fell into the #postivepeerpressure category 🤪 The weather was beautiful 🌞 I'm glad I went for my no-sleeve outfit since I got pretty hot. I started off feeling good on the trails. During Mile 4, I fell down and got a bad scrape on my knee. I had to sit for a minute before I felt comfortable standing up. Took a few more minutes to shake off the pain and get back into a steady pace. I think I've been initiated in official trail running territory 🤣 Congratulations everyone!!! This was my second @skinnyravensports Half Marathon (third if you include the Hightail Half before the name changed). Twelfth half marathon of 2023 ✅ (I'm including my marathon since this count is for any 13.1+ mile run) After completing my full marathon in June, I slowed down a bit with my training. I wasn't expecting too much from this race. We all accepted it would be raining, so it was a bit cold. My legs were also sore from running the Cirque Series course in Alyeska a few days prior. It ended up being my fourth fastest half marathon. That isn't too bad. One of the best parts was seeing all my friends at the race! I competed in this year's @abcroadak Posies Women's Cycling Series, my second time 😁 They decided to only put on three stages over the course of 2 days: Friday: Stage 1 - Potter Valley Hill Climb Saturday: Stage 2 - Eagle River North Fork Time Trial Stage 3 - Ruff Road (JBER) Road Race The hill climb was not too bad and I actually ended up with the same exact time as last year 🤣 The time trial was a bit challenging with the hills, but felt okay. I was advised to clean my gears and chain 😬😬😬 I'm pretty terrible at taking care of my bike, need to start making that a regular habit. The road race was my favorite event this year! Our group discussed a plan of what speed we wanted to start with and how to switch off who pulled in the front. It worked pretty well for the first two laps. We broke into smaller groups by the third lap, but it still worked for me. I had much more fun this time around and learned more! Thanks to all the amazing ladies for your wonderful advice! This was my eighth @alaskarunforwomen , my sixth one in-person. This was the second one at UAA, but a different course from last year. This event exemplifies why I love running. You see so many friends and everyone is cheering you on. We all support and remind each other how hard we pushed ourselves. It doesn't matter if you walked, ran your fastest, or struggled. We all crossed that finish line. We are all here to lift each other up. Even if you feel like you didn't do your best, someone is there to tell you that you did amazing ❤ I got another PR, only by a few seconds, but it's also a mass start time, so I might have been even a little bit faster. Today is Global Running Day! We went on a short run to get it done! Then we went to Yoga in the Park after. A wonderful combination! I decided today was the perfect day to try my @lululemon gear that I was recently sent for free! They found my Instagram and offered to send me some gear to try out. I think they noticed my love of pink 😍 I love the top and tights, they felt very comfortable during my run in the cool weather. The socks were great too! I'll have to find an occasion to try the shoes. They are just so white and pretty, that I don't want to dirty them up! What a wonderful experience! I ran my very first @uaa_skiwolves Turnagain Arm Trail Run! I opted for the 8-mile race. This year, it started at Potter Creek Trailhead and ended at Rainbow Trailhead. I was amazed at how fast all the experienced trail runners were. As someone who is newer to trail running, I'm proud of my time. I avoided tripping on the many roots and rocks, and surprisingly didn't get my feet wet. There were a couple of times I questioned if I chose the right path, so I was relieved when I reached the end. I'm so proud of @nan.lutton and @somewhat.athletic.couch.potato for getting it done!!! This was my very first time running in the @matsurunningclub Valley Thaw Out Half Marathon. The weather was beautiful and just right for this run! I was told it was rather flat, so I thought maybe I'd hit my sub-2 hours. I decided to go for it. Around Mile 8 or 9, I started slowing down, so I thought it wouldn't happen. But then at Mile 10, I got a second wind and did my best to get back on pace. I didn't quite make it... However, it was still a PR for my half marathon time 😊 Afterward, I ran 5 more miles to hit 18 miles for my marathon training. These miles felt tough, but I got it done. We were caught off guard by how cold it was after having decent temperatures the past week. I didn't end up participating in the Party Wave and just warmed up at the chalet. I went into this race hoping to finally get my sub-2 hour half. However, as usual, I hit a wall at around 8 miles and couldn't keep up with my pacing. But I got real close and that's something I can still be proud of. I focused really hard on my pace for once and could tell when my pace changed. A PR is a PR after all 😁 I got to ring the PR bell!!! This is my fifth Triple Finisher Patch!!! I completed THREE of the four Anchorage all-women events in 2021! I took part in the Bike for Women, Gold Nugget Triathlon, and Alaska Run for Women again! The fourth event is the Ski for Women. I keep saying I'll do it one of these years, just need to commit to getting on skis... There was no patch for 2020 since not all of these events were able to go on during the beginning of the pandemic. We're not quite out of it yet, but it was nice to get back to these events this year with safety precautions. This year, 190 women completed three events and 54 women finished all four events! I finished the Trent Waldron Half Marathon, setting a new personal record!!! After they cancelled the race for 2020, it was great to be back this year with a live race! I completed my sixth #goldnuggettriathlon and I think I did as good as I think I would 😁 I did my best to prepare mentally for the snake swim and going under the lane ropes wasn't too bad. What caught me off guard was my first push off wasn't great since my FitBit didn't start right away and I got distracted from my proper start! Size M I waited too long to buy it last year and was surprised they brought it back this year!
