Hello friends. I posted this in my stories yesterday. I thought I would go ahead and post to my feed as well in case you stop by here and not in my stories. ❤️ This is me. I am really a bit of a mess right now. There are so many moving parts in my life. Especially when it comes to my girls. I have been back and forth for some time with the decision whether to take a break from social media. A break to get really quiet with myself. To be more present with all the things happening outside of this platform. For now, I am going to be signing off. I can feel a pull to do so, and it's time to listen. I don't know how long it will be for. The last time, it was for a solid year. I know I will know when the time is right to return. I will miss all of you who follow along here. All the love, support, and kindness you have showed me. And all your beautiful art ofcourse! I hope my feed has brought you joy in your day! Gonna be honest here: I REALLY don't like this whole Instagram AI data scraping thing going on right now. I've only had this account for almost a year and it's come to a point where I'm debating whether or not to delete or archive all of my posts, just so it might not be stolen by an AI. Low key, I'm upset about this. I'm all for having other platforms for my art, but I want to keep using IG WITHOUT my art being fed into an algorithm without my consent. I will keep Instagram for now, mainly for just chatting and stories and whatnot. (Still don't know what I'm going to do about posting art on here though.) In the meantime, I've made a Tumblr and a Cara account if any of y'all want to follow me on there. I'm grateful for all of the friends I've made on here over the past year. This is a birthday gift for my son Milo on the day he turns 19. It’s hand stitched silk and wool, on dyed wool felt with vintage fabric — on reclaimed wood panel. Last winter I found this 3 part panel in a junk market. It had been a vintage Italian religious item - mother and child - but it was damaged. I looked up the definition. Triptych: a set of three associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together On the left I have stitched lyrics to Bill Withers song “Lovely Day”. As Milo grew up, the days I spent with him were almost always lovely. The center is a portrait of us together, surrounded by a flower garden The third panel includes some of what Milo’s most lovely days have contained. Seward Park, RuPaul, Kermit, Wakanda Forever, NOLA, books (including Octavia Butler, James Baldwin, and of course Stephen King — our favorite read aloud). Throw back to another painting from 2019. One of the biggest things about any of my work from that year is it's some of the first art pieces I made after not being able to use my hands for a whole year due to injuries and having to learn to to do art as a disabled person with more limitations. I couldn't even feed/bathe myself at times because of the extent of my injuries and had to rely on my partner more than ever before. While I might not have been painting up to my standards, I'm really proud of myself for continuing to paint and believing I could get back to where I once was. It was pretty hard back then. My doctor told me I'd wouldn't play bass again and that doing so much art was too much on my hands. If doing easy paintings were too much for my hands just imagine how difficult everyday tasks were and how difficult it is to get and hold a job when your body just taps out on you? I couldn't keep/hold a job & I'm still struggling to get any sort of assistance with my disabilities. To me, I had no other options. My disability pushed me to create even more and focus on starting a business for myself that allowed me to work when I could and rest when I can't. Painting on receipts series never ends. . I've finally found some time in my hands to talk to people I haven't spoken to in a while. And you know what? They said it felt like we're picking up conversation right where we left because they feel connected through my art. A few days ago I was talking to a friend about why the #foundationdiploma wasn’t about creating ‘pretty pictures’. And they said ‘I always enjoyed art but I’m no good at it’. That’s why I’ve taken 40 mins this morning to represent my coffee mug in different media & styles. This is what the #foundationdiploma is about. Not being ‘good’ (I’m not a photocopier 😅). But expressing yourself in different ways - exploring the mug. Some of these cups are more ‘successful’ than others but I actually like the left handed drawing in black China graph & the deconstructed posca pen mugs a lot. And the block coloured top half of the mug on the last page. You’re not ‘no good’ at art - you just haven’t played with your paint set/pencils/crayons/collage/oils/mixed media/print set enough.
