It's so refreshing to see Filipinxs talk openly about health and wellness! Growing up, my family never talked about mental health. It was understood that whatever you had going on, you'd deal with it yourself on your own time. As I grew into an adult, I had to do A LOT of work to undo my inherited stigma around mental health. And events like this continue to affirm the importance of not only taking care of ourselves but also each other. Thank you @therapinxy (and Christy @compassionate_connections. There was a pocket of time in between 2021-2022 that I didn’t leave the house without my hassleblad. I wanted to document everything. It all felt like such a special time. I didn’t want to forget anything. Every detail felt important. I think because prior to that, lockdown really did a number on all of us. This along with disability, I really learned earlier on the importance of sharing space with one another and especially the space you make for yourself. I cherished the time I had with my community. I fell in love with all the beautiful hearts and souls I met that year. I finally got my tatak, a traditional Filipino tattoo that uses motifs designed to represent traditional life, connected by ancestral family history. The motifs in the design relate to duality, flowing energy, connection to water, community and earth, growth, healing and abundance. Connor also included the rising woman symbol which represents alchemy and transformation and the divine union of feminine and masculine polarities. Last Saturday, I hosted an Ugnayan Tambayan: Kwento at Kapwa, at @foamcoffeeph (Legarda) for a small and varied group of folks who were open, curious and willing to connect. ✨ There was a mix of introverts and extroverts in the group. There was a small conversation on “masks” we put on to connect better with others. And I guess sometimes we adapt in a desire to connect. But I also wonder, in what ways might being in the company of others also expand our ways of being? In what ways does connecting with others expand the ways we perceive ourselves? Kapwa is about a shared inner identity. What are the things we connect on with others? And among those things, what surprises us and challenges the notions we have of ourselves? *** I’m grateful for chances to meaningfully connect with new people, even briefly, without guarantees of a sustained relationship or connection afterwards. I’m grateful for learning the stories of others, and sharing my own story with each interaction. I think that people pass through our lives, and sometimes we pass through others’, and in those moments lie an opportunity to have someone remember us because of how we made them feel. I can’t say I’m the cheeriest, most loving person by nature. Not at all. I can’t say I always embody empathy and kindness. Far from it. But I’m writing this post as a note to self, that in each moment, there is an opportunity to create connection. To make someone feel seen and heard. To feel less alone. So whether it’s a group of strangers, age old friends or even family, in what ways are we creating meaningful moments for connection? #ugnayantambayan #uwugnayan #kapwa

This is KAPWA 🤎🌏🇵🇭 My culture has a belief of togetherness where everyone in the diaspora feels like family regardless of blood connection. Your mom and dad are my tita and tito. Your grandparents are my lolo and lola. You are my kabsat. I was raised in this belief and now understanding the spiritual meaning of kapwa as an adult practicing hilot. Hilot [Ablon in Iluko] is the traditional manual healing practice of the Filipino people that involves energy manipulation to bring about balance and harmony to the individual, as well as balance and harmony to the natural world. Hilot also utilizes plant, oils, divination and prayers. Offering hilot to the community and to each other goes back all the way to the motherland— family, friends and neighbors would go to the folk healer known as manghihilot and seek relief of what ails them. What ails them could be something physical, emotional, mental or spiritual and the manghihilot would correct the energetic imbalance. Yesterday, I sat at the table of a prepared brunch by my two boys and realized that this is the last Mother’s Day that there would only be three of us at that table. Crazy! 😳😍💕 I’ve gone back and forth wondering if sharing my decision to have a free birth at home is something I want to open up about because people be peopling with their unwanted and negative opinions. #nottoday As always, spirit pulls me in to be vulnerable and real with every part of my life. It’s no one’s business how you decide to have your birthing experience so as long it is what YOU and your partner decide and it’s what feels 10000% fully aligned to you! I decide to share what some won’t cause if it helps ONE person than it was worth it! Looking back at my first delivery experience with Neo there were so many instances where I gave my trust and decision making away to medical professionals (whom did amazing with what they knew and had…including myself mind you my background is Newborn ICU), but ultimately I didn’t even give myself a chance to trust my body or was ever even asked, “Well what is your body saying? What do you want?” When I dug deeper into research behind the origination of OBGYN world it was heart breaking and revealed a different light to my desires around birthing. But that is a WHOLE other story to share. I’ve never trusted my body and my spiritual team/ancestors more than I do now. I think to myself if my ancestors have done this a million times before me than I can too! And I WILL! I also have an incredible partner that makes me feel so lifted and confident in all that I do and this is no exception. “I am made for this!!!” I also say this with so much care as there are many women who I know personally that desire to be a mother and bear more children and can’t and so for those of you in that space I hold you closely in my heart 🤎 and acknowledge your power still! I am so grateful for the way my ancestors have guided me to this place and the decisions I have made to take on something that fully allows me to trust. I’m ready for this rite of passage and my second initiation into motherhood! . . . .

I met Rey through @fmhisf and through @hilotwithverma with one of my first online indigo dye workshops. He was always so supportive and always checked on me through out the pandemic. I always looked forward to popping up at Ginhawa Markerplace cause it was always a chance we could say hello in real life. Pregnancy the second time around is a wild experience for me compared to my first. Mostly because who I was 8 years ago is NOT who I am today. I was in a very dark place post my divorce in 2019. It was ugly and the demons I faced within myself was not pretty. I faced pockets of sitting with deception and lies for the multitude of masks I wore to show the world who I wanted them to see and ignored the parts of myself that was literally withering away in shame, guilt and unworthiness. I felt like I died inside a thousand times not believing I’d ever see light. Believing I was undeserving to love again and doomed for punishment the rest of my days. (The dramatic Scorpio ♏️ in me was in full effect y’all)! This pregnancy brings me full ⭕️ circle in the most beautiful ways. Besides pregnancy itself being a humongous learning lesson and opportunity for deeper growth…. Tho sharing my life vulnerably with you all on social media over the span of a decade has prompted much imposter syndrome, it has documented the ultimate gift that in the midst of darkness it’s difficult to fathom the life you could have on the other side. Looking back, gives proof that light does shine the brightest in the darkest places. The comfort you must learn to find in your shadow is crucial before embracing the beauty of what the light brings. I always say, “The people who know joy best are those who have experienced suffering the worst!” It’s those that choose to evolve past the suffering that really understand the meaning of joy. The nectar is always sweeter when we have tasted the bitterness and sourness of unripe fruit. Let yourself ripen baby!!!! If you feel something in this post, share it here.
