Prosten Nils är inte nöjd, inte nöjd alls. Fastän våren kommit långt i dessa subtropiska nejder är det ingen som plöjer jorden på den lokala kyrkans marker, även om blomsterprakt åtminstone luktar bättre än eget skryt. Fogdens borg luktar av fläder och hamster och man var tvungen att navigera runt en trasig jätteträkanin för att komma in. Den lokala kyrkan var klädsamt grå men mindre än till och med bönhuset i Lubboträsk. Inchmahome Priory 🕍🌳🛶 - Hier ist schon die Anreise ein wahres Erlebnis. Auf einer winzigen Insel mitten auf einem winzigen See in der Nähe von Stirling befinden sich die Ruinen eines alten Augustinerklosters aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Die Überfahrt findet in einem kleinen Bötchen statt, das Besucher am Pier abholt, sobald ein Holzschild umgedreht wird. Das fühlt sich bereits nach Abenteuer an. Wer auf der Insel Inchmahome ankommt, fühlt sich, wie straight in ein Märchenbuch geplumpst. SUP and swim in Scotland's only lake today, the Lake of Menteith. A paddle over to the island to visit Inchmahome Priory and have some lunch before just about surfing back. La nostra intenció és anar a prop d’Aberfoyle, a les ribes del llac Menteith, a 4,6 milles d’Aberfoyle (uns 9 minuts amb cotxe), i anar a visitar la Inchmahome Priory, runes d’una abadia en una illa al mig del llac Menteith. L’aparcament pel cotxe i el ferry es troben a la riba est del llac, amb les corresponents indicacions ho trobarem fàcilment. Els horaris d’obertura de l’abadia i del funcionament del ferry son a partir de les 10h fins les 14:45h, i els preus son de £28,80 per tots quatre (amb la E.P. surt gratuït). Inchmahome Priory is a beautifully situated monastery, founded by a small community of Augustinian canons led by Walter Comyn, the Earl of Menteith. The isolated island location gave the perfect tranquility for worship, and the priory has links with many famous historical names including Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and Sir Walter Scott. The name "Inchmahome" comes from the Gaelic Innis MoCholmaig, meaning island of St Colmaig. ‘Hurble purple hath a red girdle A stone in his belly A stake through his arse And yet hurble purple is never the worse.’ (The Game of Kings) Inchmahome Priory on its island on the Lake of Menteith is where the young Mary Queen of Scots has been sent for safety. This is the time of the ’Rough Wooing’, which provides the often violent background to much of The Game of Kings as the Scots and English battle over the choice of a future husband for Mary. It’s also where Mary has met a ‘monk’ with an insufficiency of tonsure, and he’s taught her a riddle that Mary can’t solve. Frustrated, she demands to know what it is, and only Sybilla knows the answer because it’s a rhyme she invented for her own children! It’s the red hawthorn berry which has a stone in its middle, and a stalk that looks very much like a ‘stake through his arse.’ The rhyme tells Sybilla two things, though. Firstly, that her outlawed son, Lymond, has been nearby, and secondly he’s warning her that the young Queen Mary, at this dangerous time in her life, has been left unguarded. Lymond was able to spend enough time alone with Mary to teach her the rhyme. The priory of Inchmahome was founded in 1238 by a small community of Augustinian friars, with Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith, as their patron. Monastic life at Inchmahome finally came to an end not long after Mary was sent there for safety, a result of the Reformation in 1560. The chapter house eventually became a mausoleum for the earls of Menteith, and stones from the other buildings were taken away to be reused. (Or recycled, as we might term it today!). With the chances of getting away this Summer becoming ever more elusive ....it was a joy to discover the incredible decadence and appeal of wild water swimming in my homeland ! first time in many years .....At this stunning lake in Scotland. #lakeofmenteith although mostly known for her Lochs - Scotland does in fact have several lakes This magical place even has its own priory and island #inchmahomepriory that can be reached by boat. Where Mary queen of Scots took refuge as a child There’s something beyond therapeutic about being amongst the stillness of such a clear freshwater expanse - I cannot recommend enough a dip in these lovely waters. And it was very refreshing also to have a wet swimsuit that was not drenched in smell of chlorine ! The lake is beautiful and as it’s relatively small expanse often freezes in winter. In fact I learnt to ice skate here in the big freeze of the 1970s! Holding onto the back of a chair ...whilst gliding along the frozen lake ! It’s one of my favourite places an elixir for the soul ! 🏴 Surreal morning on the Lake of Menteith (Loch Inchmahome), Scotland. The previous day there was a big storm; we had a message pop up on our interactive tv to say stay in the log cabin due to extreme winds. The winds were ferocious, knocking and creaking in our cabin, making it sound like it was going to implode 😄 The morning after, the weather was all calm. But plenty of debris and branches strewn all over the place, and our mountain bikes had come loose and toppled over. We got in the car and drove to the Lake of Menteith to see Inchmahome Priory- an ancient monastery, which is situated in the middle of the lake, accessible only by boat. No one was there when we arrived at the lakeside pier. After a few minutes, we could see a boat emerging from the mist. It docked, and Martin (pictured) told us to hop on. We were the only ones there; we hadn't seen a single other soul! Martin guided the boat over the very calm waters of the Lake of Menteith- the mist meant we couldn't even see the Priory in the middle of the lake, it was surreal. Eventually, the island was visible. We docked and hopped off the boat. And then we explored the ruins of Inchmahome Priory- dating back to 1238.
