जेव्हा बैलगाडीवरच्या मराठ्यांनी तोफांसह तयार असलेल्या शत्रूला नेस्तनाबूत केलं" मानवी क्षमतांच्या पलीकडे जाऊन जेव्हा राष्ट्रसेवेत कर्तव्य बजावले जातात तेव्हा घडलेल्या सत्यघटना देखील एखाद्या मोठ्या लेखकाच्या कल्पनाविलासाला लाजवतील अशा असतात. प्रसंग होता १९७१ च्या भारत-पाकिस्तान (बांग्लादेश निर्मिती) युद्धातला. मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री रेजिमेंट भारताच्या पूर्व आणि पश्चिम अशा दोन्ही आघाड्यांवर लढत होती. त्यातील चार बटालियन पूर्व आघाडीवर होती. 1st मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन जमालपूर मध्ये, 5th मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन सौद मध्ये, 7th मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन बाग डोगरा मध्ये तर 22nd मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन हिली येथे तैनात होती. थोडक्यात सांगायचं झालं तर "लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री" ही सैन्याची ती तुकडी असते जी त्वरित कृती करण्यासाठी तयार केलेली असते. साधारणतः ह्या तुकडीकडे मोठे हत्यारं नसतात आणि त्यामुळे सैन्याची ही तुकडी आदेश मिळाल्या मिळाल्या शत्रूने काही कृत्य करण्याच्या आत आपली कृती करण्यासाठी तयार असते. अशा प्रकारचा गनिमीकावा करण्यात मराठ्यांपेक्षा सक्षम पर्याय इतिहासाला देखील सापडला नाही आणि वर्तमानाला देखील नाही. म्हणूनच मराठा लाईट इंफ्रंटरीला "जंगी पलटण" म्हणून पण संबोधले जाते. युद्धाची घोषणा झाल्यानंतर भारतीय सैन्य बांग्लादेश (तेव्हा पूर्व पाकिस्तान) आणि तंगेलच्या बाजूला सरकायला सुरुवात झाली त्यातील मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीला "पॅरा रेजिमेंट"च्या अति गोपनीय अशा 'एअर ड्रॉप मिशन' ला यशस्वी करत त्यांना ढाका पर्यंत पोहोचवण्याचं कार्य देण्यात आलं. त्यासाठी जमालपूर च्या भागात जाऊन तिथे "रोड ब्लॉक" लावणे हा ह्या मिशन चा एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भाग होता. जमालपूरचा हा भाग अतिशय दुर्गम असा होता. रस्ते तर खराब होतेच पण त्याच बरोबर मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीला एक नदी वजा बंधारा पण पार करून जावा लागणार होती. पाण्याच्या प्रवाहामुळे तो पार करणं देखील अवघड होऊन बसलं होतं. दुसऱ्या बाजूला जमालपूर बेस ला तैनात होती शत्रू सैन्याची 31st बलुच रेजिमेंट. १५०० सैनिकांच्या त्या तुकडीसोबत अनेक तोफा, मशीन गन, १२० मिलिमीटर मोर्टार गन आणि अँटी टॅंक गन. मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीसमोर संकट दुतर्फा होतं, बलाढ्य सैनिक आणि निसर्ग. पण शक्तीला युक्तीची जोड देत ५ डिसेंबर १९७१ मराठ्यांनी दुर्दम्य साहस दाखवलं. आपल्या जवळील समान बैलगाड्यांवर लादत अवघड रस्त्यांनी ते अंतर कापत पाकिस्तानी सैन्याच्या नाकाखालून ब्रम्हपुत्रा नदीचा तो बंधारा पार केला.

जेव्हा बैलगाडीवरच्या मराठ्यांनी तोफांसह तयार असलेल्या शत्रूला नेस्तनाबूत केलं" मानवी क्षमतांच्या पलीकडे जाऊन जेव्हा राष्ट्रसेवेत कर्तव्य बजावले जातात तेव्हा घडलेल्या सत्यघटना देखील एखाद्या मोठ्या लेखकाच्या कल्पनाविलासाला लाजवतील अशा असतात. प्रसंग होता १९७१ च्या भारत-पाकिस्तान (बांग्लादेश निर्मिती) युद्धातला. मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री रेजिमेंट भारताच्या पूर्व आणि पश्चिम अशा दोन्ही आघाड्यांवर लढत होती. त्यातील चार बटालियन पूर्व आघाडीवर होती. 1st मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन जमालपूर मध्ये, 5th मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन सौद मध्ये, 7th मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन बाग डोगरा मध्ये तर 22nd मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री बटालियन हिली येथे तैनात होती. थोडक्यात सांगायचं झालं तर "लाईट इन्फेन्ट्री" ही सैन्याची ती तुकडी असते जी त्वरित कृती करण्यासाठी तयार केलेली असते. साधारणतः ह्या तुकडीकडे मोठे हत्यारं नसतात आणि त्यामुळे सैन्याची ही तुकडी आदेश मिळाल्या मिळाल्या शत्रूने काही कृत्य करण्याच्या आत आपली कृती करण्यासाठी तयार असते. अशा प्रकारचा गनिमीकावा करण्यात मराठ्यांपेक्षा सक्षम पर्याय इतिहासाला देखील सापडला नाही आणि वर्तमानाला देखील नाही. म्हणूनच मराठा लाईट इंफ्रंटरीला "जंगी पलटण" म्हणून पण संबोधले जाते. युद्धाची घोषणा झाल्यानंतर भारतीय सैन्य बांग्लादेश (तेव्हा पूर्व पाकिस्तान) आणि तंगेलच्या बाजूला सरकायला सुरुवात झाली त्यातील मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीला "पॅरा रेजिमेंट"च्या अति गोपनीय अशा 'एअर ड्रॉप मिशन' ला यशस्वी करत त्यांना ढाका पर्यंत पोहोचवण्याचं कार्य देण्यात आलं. त्यासाठी जमालपूर च्या भागात जाऊन तिथे "रोड ब्लॉक" लावणे हा ह्या मिशन चा एक महत्त्वपूर्ण भाग होता. जमालपूरचा हा भाग अतिशय दुर्गम असा होता. रस्ते तर खराब होतेच पण त्याच बरोबर मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीला एक नदी वजा बंधारा पण पार करून जावा लागणार होती. पाण्याच्या प्रवाहामुळे तो पार करणं देखील अवघड होऊन बसलं होतं. दुसऱ्या बाजूला जमालपूर बेस ला तैनात होती शत्रू सैन्याची 31st बलुच रेजिमेंट. १५०० सैनिकांच्या त्या तुकडीसोबत अनेक तोफा, मशीन गन, १२० मिलिमीटर मोर्टार गन आणि अँटी टॅंक गन. मराठा लाईट इन्फेन्ट्रीसमोर संकट दुतर्फा होतं, बलाढ्य सैनिक आणि निसर्ग. पण शक्तीला युक्तीची जोड देत ५ डिसेंबर १९७१ मराठ्यांनी दुर्दम्य साहस दाखवलं. आपल्या जवळील समान बैलगाड्यांवर लादत अवघड रस्त्यांनी ते अंतर कापत पाकिस्तानी सैन्याच्या नाकाखालून ब्रम्हपुत्रा नदीचा तो बंधारा पार केला.
