Some fun little pamphlets and laminated sheets I've made for my workshop at the sorcery festival next week. "Ars Herbaria" is just a bit of fun, and not some ancient text as I'll not doubt be told in the comments. Excited to see some of you up in snowy Hólmavík next weekend! So excited to deliver this workshop at this year's Viridis Genii Symposium #VGS 🌱 The workshop will expand upon the talk and cover topics of stave creation, as well as existing and historical staves, their uses and how we work them with plant materia. We will cover how we can utilise woods, barks, resins, leaves, roots, flowers and more for specific stave work. And how we may also work these staves alongside plant materia from outside of Iceland. This workshop mixes folklore, experimentation, and my own UPG to discover new and practical ways to work old magic. This is part of this year's Viridis Geni Symposium, check out @viridisgenii for more info, tickets and all the other presentations and workshops coming up at this year's event. #viridisgeniisymposium #vgs #viridisgenii #magicalherbs #magicalherbalism #icelandicplants #icelandicfolklore #icelandicfolkmagic #icelandicmagic #Icelandicmagicalstaves #galdrastafir

SALE! Hæ everyone, I wanted to let you all know that many of my previous classes are now on sale on my website, they won't be there forever as I've got a whole collection of new classes coming this year. They will be on sale until I remove them from the site. So you've only got 2 months left to get them at a cheap price. All my classes are between 1 and a half and 2 hours long. Upon purchase you'll get access to the class recording and PowerPoint. • The Icelandic Folk Magic series bundle is 3 classes in one, covering Icelandic plants and staves and how we can work them together for both folkloric and contemporary magic. • Inked in Blood begins to explore methods of cresting your own Icelandic staves. This class formed the basis of the class I presented at this year's Salem Spring Agora. So if that interested you this is step 1 in the process. • Under the Skin explores shapeshifting and spirit flight in the Icelandic Tradition as well as comparing it to shaleshfting in other Northern European traditions. • Draumagaldur explores Icelandic drema magic, and gives practical examples of how we can work staves and plants together for all sorts of oneiromantic work. If you're interested in Icelandic magic then these are all a great place to start. Ya boy had his book launched at one of the world's most famous and respected occult bookshops. Usually, I tend to shy away from taking pride in myself for things, but to have had my book launched at Treadwells has been such a massive honour and career high. I've been studying and practising for the better part of 2 decades now, and this has been such a surreal and fantastic thing to have happened. I want to thank my amazing publishers @crossedcrowbooks as well as all the friends, family, and acquaintances who have inspired, taught, and held me through this. "Útiseta - the practice of sitting out is integral to Icelandic Folk Magic. Sitting out has been done in a few ways over the ages, Jón Árnason records a somewhat complex method from the later 19th century. Involving a grey woollen cloak, among other things. He recorded that it was said to only be performed at a crossroads with each road leading to a church. We, of course, know that you don't need anything besides your own self for practical útiseta. Sitting out on mounds to commune with the spirits within them. Sitting out in fields to glean information from the plants, rocks, and trees. Sitting out on a stone within a river to learn from the spirits of the waters. The location dictates the spirits you will communicate with, you're venturing into their homes. We don't do so lightly, of course, and it is first up to our own confirming divination and voiced questions to spirits if they wish us to undergo this practice within their spaces." A little snippet from an upcoming patreon post on Útiseta, the Nordic practice of sitting out. Find the link to my patreon in my bio. I discuss this in a little more detail in my upcoming book Icelandic Folk Magic. Coming out this year. If you like the image please send all the love in the world to @strigaartist, a close friend and amazingly talented bean. Next month (March 9th) I'll be delivering a talk on Icelandic magical herbalism for this year's botanica obscura conference. I'm honoured to have been brought back for a second year, and can't wait to hear some of the other amazing speakers. Find tickets via @botanicaobscuraconference ----‐------------------------ Jurtagaldur: Magical Herbalism in the Icelandic Tradition Icelandic magical herbalism combines the use of magical plants, timings, staves and more. In this lecture Albert will break down a few examples of folkloric magic from Iceland involving certain plants and magical staves. From there we take things a step further and work in UPG, personal staves from Albert and those around him, and methods of making magic with our own local plant allies. The combination of plants and staves is a powerful practical technique for sorcery, and one that we can fit to work for us no matter where in the world we may be. #icelandicplants #icelandicfolklore #folklore #folkloricmagic #folkmagic #witchcraft #icelandicfolkmagic #witchcraft #witchessofinstagram

Kyndilmessa offerings - today is kyndilmessa, candlemas. While spring maybe sprung for many around Europe, in Iceland we are still deep in winter. The traditional kyndilmessa candle doesn't look like the one I'm using, but sadly I didn't have time to create a candle over Christmas last year in preparation as Icelandic tradition dictates. The weather here in Iceland isn't great, which lucky bodes well for the next months as the saying goes: 🇮🇸 "Ef I heiði sólin sést, á sjálfa kyndilmessu snjóa vænta máttu mest maður upp frá þessu" 🇬🇧 "If the sun shines in a clear sky on Candlemas, you can expect snow to come along next" So with today's weather I'm happy that we won't have a harder few months left of winter before summer starts again in Iceland. #icelandicfolkmagic #icelandicfolklore #candlemas #kyndilmessa #folklore

In the mysterious world of Icelandic folklore, a lesser-known but equally intriguing figure is Leppalúði, also known as the Lazy Husband. Often overshadowed by his fearsome wife, Grýla, and their infamous children, the Yule Lads, Leppalúði brings a unique, eerie presence to Iceland's rich mythological tapestry. Portrayed as a more passive, laid-back character compared to his active and terrifying wife, Leppalúði still adds a chilling depth to the stories of Grýla and the Yule Lads. Lurking in the shadows of the Icelandic highlands, he contributes to the suspenseful and fearful atmosphere during the Christmas season, embodying the dark and lurking dangers of the Icelandic winter. Leppalúði's role in Icelandic folklore, though less aggressive than that of Grýla, is vital in adding complexity to the narrative of the holiday season. While Grýla actively pursues naughty children, Leppalúði's more subdued presence serves as a subtle yet haunting reminder of the ominous aspects of the Icelandic winter. His character enriches the spooky aura of the Yule season, playing an integral part in the tales and songs that heighten the eerie atmosphere of this festive time. As a background figure, he adds a quiet but palpable sense of dread, contributing to the multi-dimensional portrayal of Iceland's most feared mythical family. Despite his less prominent role, Leppalúði holds significant cultural importance in Icelandic folklore. The tale of Leppalúði, intertwined with the more dynamic narratives of his family, creates a haunting portrayal of Icelandic folklore, captivating the imagination with a blend of the mundane and the mystical. In the folklore landscape of Iceland, Leppalúði stands as a mysterious and essential character, adding to the nation's rich heritage with his enigmatic and chilling charm. #folklorepodcasters #yuletide #yule #fabledcollective #folklorepodcasts #YuleMagic #folklorepodcast #folkloreandfairytales #FolkloreThursday #christmasfolklore #folklorefriday #folkloreart #podcast #yulefolklore #yulelore #folklore #Icelandic #folk #icelandicfolklore #icelandicfolktales #icelandicfolkmagic

Tomorrow is Boðunardagur Maríu March 25th. The feast of the annunciation of the Virgin Mary. In Iceland this was held as an important festival long after the reformation. A clear starry night preceding the day was supposed to be a good omen. Tonight, we have a clear starry night and nice northern lights. Which I'll take to be an even more special omen. These days relating to Mary are special in Icelandic folk traditions, as the Virgin Mary is heavily assimilated with Freyja. You could even call our reflection of Mary Maríu-Freyja because of her specific mythology and magic within Icelandic tradition. #Icelandicfolklore #Icelandicmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #maríufreyja #freyja #mary #folkmagic #folklore #annunciationofmary #witchesofinstagram #witchcraft

Today marks the start of Einmánuður. The last month of winter in the old Icelandic calendar. In the old days this was a day of giving food to the poor and sharing with those who may need help getting through the last month of winter. This day also marks the vernal equinox. Spring is slowly springing in Iceland but not yet fully sprung. This month was known as the month of young men, much in keeping with the theme of spring awakening. Sometimes this first day of Einmánuður was referred to as vorinngöngudagur, the beginning of spring day. The day can be marked with lighting white candles to represent the return of the light. Partaking in any Ostara/Equinox springtide traditions you wish, and giving offerings to the land as well as donating to charities or otherwise helping to support your community. Folklore tells us that a wet Einmánuður means a good spring will follow. The month was traditionally greeted by this verse: "Einmánuður minn, minn gakk þú í bæinn. Vertu ekki úti vindinum vorlangan daginn". "Dear lone month, come on in. Dpmt stay out in the wind all the spring day long". Where we don't have a specific named spirit for this month, it's connection to young men may well give it the energy of the son of Gói and Þorri. As the next month Harpa is regarded as their daughter. #oldcalendar #oldicelandiccalendar #Einmánuður #winter #Icelandicfolklore #icelandicfolkmagic #witchesoficeland #norsemagic #nordicmagic #vikingcalendar

Maríukross - Mary's Cross. This stave comes from the stave collection Lbs 5472. Not a whole lot is known of this stave, but it may well have been worked to honour the Virgin Mary. Due to this, in contemporary practice we utilise it for representing, calling on or channelling the virtues of the Virgin Mary. Within Iceland she is heavily assimilated with Freyja and Frigg (who may have been the same goddess). We work this stave when calling upon her for healing, blessing and nurturing. #icelandicmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #folklore #folkmagic #magicalstaves #galdrastafir #galdrastafur #galdramyndir #icelandicmagicalstave #witchesofinstagram #witchesoficeland #witchcraft #witch #spiritual #spirituality

A stave to preserve the magical virtues of herbs. In Icelandic tradition a plant can lose its power if it is not properly harvested and cared for. I designed this stave to work to preserve the 'juice' of magical plants and strengthen their spirits before we utilise them in our work. It can be inscribed on a foraging bag, or piece of linen used to conserve harvested plants. #folkmagic #folklore #icelandic #Icelandicmagic #Icelandicfolklore #icelandicfolkmagic #herbalism #magicalherbalism #witchesofinstagram #witchesoficeland #witchcraft #spiritual #spirituality #witchery #witchy #greenmagic #galdrastafir #galdramyndir #galdrastafur #icelandicmagicalstave

This varnarkross - cross of protection is another stave recorded in the collection Lbs 5472. The cross is used as a protective amulet. It can be carved or burned into any protective wood, metal or bone. And worn as a talisman to ward off evil forces. The cross should be created and consecrated within the hour and day of the Sun and/or Mars. When creating it and finally blessing it before use, pray the Pater Noster over it 3 times. #Icelandicmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #varnarkross #galdrastafir #galdramyndir #galdrar #galdrastafur #norsemagic #Icelandicfolklore #folkmagic #folklore #witchesofinstagram #witchesoficeland #icelandicwitchcraft #nordicwitchcraft #nordicmagic #protection #protectivemagic #witch #witchcraft #spiritual #spirituality

On February 1st and 2nd, many lights are lit. The day of Brighid, St. Bride and the return of the beginnings of spring down south. In Iceland, the 2nd of February is known as kyndilmessa (torch mass), kertamessa (candle mass), Ljósmessa (light mass) Surviving the reformation, this festival was known by many in Iceland even until more recent times. A special candle used to be kept by families, often made at or around Christmas. The candle was lit and burned in honour of the virgin Mary. Kyndilmessa is a day of weather predictions also, the folklorist Jón Árnason recorded this verse: "Ef í heiði sólsin sést á sjálfa kyndilmessu snjóa vænta máttu mest maður upp frá þessu". If the sun shines and the sky is clear on candlemas, one can expect snow to be on its way. Brighter days herald frost and snow in the coming month. We are now a third of the way through þorri, and this sometimes tough month of midwinter will soon give way to the next month, Góa. #Icelandicmagic #icelandicfolklore #icelandicfolkmagic #candlemas #kyndilmessa #candlemass #imbolc #rebirth #spiritual #spirotuality #witchcraft #animism #nordicaninism #icelandiccalendar #weatherdivination #witchesoficeland #witchesofinstagram #witchy #witchcraft

Í slenska Sau ð fé ð Sheep were the lifeblood of Iceland for centuries. Iceland’s first Viking settlers brought sheep with them to the island about 1100 years ago, and their wool and meat helped the Icelandic people survive the harsh weather conditions of our majestic land. One of the many Icelandic words for sheep is the word ‘fé/fjár’, which is also synonymous with the Icelandic word for money. For example, in Icelandic the word for finances is ‘fjármál’ which directly translates to sheep/money-matters. The word for treasure ‘fjársjóður’ directly translates to sheep/money-fund. Many must also recognise Óðinns words from Hávamál: “deyr FÉ, deyja frændur”. The old Nordic word ‘fé’ is often interpreted as cattle, but in both old and modern Icelandic, it directly translates to sheep. #icelandicsheep #icelandicwool #icelandicmagic #futhark #runes #rune #galdr #galdrastafir #icelandicfolkmagic #folkmagic #norn #norns #witchcraft #witchesofinstagram #iceland #sheep #vikinghouse #viking #vikings #nordic #skullart #icelandicartist #artist #sheepskull #icelandichistory #havamal #icelandic #ram #Ísland #farm

Maríulind, this small shrine and spring is located at Hellnar next to Arnarstapi on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The shrine is fairly new, both locals and tourists visit the spot and leave offerings to Mary. In Icelandic folk magic and lore she is queen of the elves, and heavily assimilated with the Norse goddess Freyja. People leave flowers and offerings to her. The space is a very serene area. A magic nut and island life. Why is this simple picture significant? #scottish and #iclandicfolkmagic have so many similarities. One I loved to see at the @skogarmuseum whilst researching our shared #folkmagic #heritage was this simple wee nut. In #iceland this is called a Lausnarsteinn or a loosening stone. In Scotland we call these Mary’s Nut. Mary’s Nut’ reminds us of our interconnectedness across the ocean. I love it for that not just it’s #folkmagic reputation. People who would wander the beaches of Orkney and the Western Isles in better days would sometimes find these strange, kidney-shaped fruit washed up on a Scottish seashore, far from their land of origin in the West Indies. Called the Molucca Bean in English, because of an early presumption that they came from the Molucca Islands (or ‘Spice Islands’) in Indonesia, their commonest Gaelic names are Cnò Mhoire ‘the Virgin Mary’s nut’ and Àirne Moire ‘Mary’s kidney’, and they were traditionally prized by the Gaels of the Western Isles. They must also wash up on Icelandic shores to or maybe this found it’s way there from a Scottish persons pocket :) The most highly valued beans were those with a cross-like depression on both sides, which clearly made, at least in the people’s eyes, a connection with their holy Christian protector, the Virgin Mary. The great late-19th century collector of tradition in Eriskay and South Uist, Father Allan MacDonald, told of the Àirne Moire, which was thicker and more rounded than the Cnò Mhoire, first being blessed by the priest, and then being worn around the neck as a charm, particularly by women in labour. Hence it’s reputation as a loosening stone in Iceland. We use them for the same reasons to help child birth. I wasn’t surprised to see the amount of cross over between Iceland and Scotland given how culturally new Iceland is relatively speaking and how close we are but this was a delight to see. A little piece of folk magic that unites us rather than divides and a piece of folk magic people in the north have in common. #scottishfolkmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #marysnut #gaelicfolkmagic #pagan #scottishwitchcraft #witchesofinstagram🔮🌙 #scottishwitch #witch

Tools for harvesting: My galdrahnífur - magical knife. And rótklæði- root cloth. In the old days Icelandic herbalists and wise people wouldn't have had access to fancy knives used only for foraging. A person would have only had one knife, due to this I don't work with separate knives for separate purposes. The root cloth is my own UPG, it comes from the folklore surrounding the potency of certain Icelandic herbs and plants. Roots especially are said to loose potency if they see the sun once harvested before it is time for them to be used. For this reason I created a linen cloth inscribed with staves to preserve the potency of plants. The root is dug up shielded from light, then place into the bag before it's cleaned and worked with. I've just added a little booklet of Iceland folk magic to my webstore. This is a 29 page collection of charms, simple spells, galdur and herbal magic that can work with plants from many regions, not just those specific to Iceland. I've included ways that we work some older staves with plants and other materia in contemporary practice. A washing stave. I use this to cleanse before any workings, rituals and sometimes afterwards also. The words come from part of the ægishjálmur written charm but we're also recorded by Jón Árnason as part of a protection and cleansing. The stave I designed myself. I use either charcoal or even black eyeliner to draw the stave on. I then add an infusion of hvönn (angelica), reyniber (rowan berries) and Einiber (juniper berries) to a small bowl of fresh water or a bath. I speak the chant three times as I wash the stave from my body as well as clearing my nose and washing my ears. In many traditions people wash or cleanse before they come before their spirits and ancestors as a sign of respect. To me magical cleansing is a necessity even if just using a small cup of tea and anointing myself. #magicalherbs #magicalststaves #icelandicmagicalherbalism #Icelandicmagic #galdrastafir #cleansing #spiritualcleansing #nordicmagic #northernwitchcraft #northernmagic #icelandicwitchcraft #icelandicfolkmagic #folkwitch #folkmagician #folkmagic #witchesoficeland #witchesofinstagram

Some of my alternative contemporary luck staves. If you wish to use them I recommend working in Jovial times and aspects. Green and Blue colours. Jupiter and luck oils etc. Carved onto sitka spruce and anointed with a Jovial oil in a Jovial time would be best. #icelandicwitchcraft #Icelandicmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #galdrastafir #magicalstaves #witchesoficeland #witchcraft #folkmagician #runes #norsemagic #nordicmagic

I was raised Catholic, I learned the our father and hail Mary by heart from a young age. I went to the church of St. Pancras as well as the nearby school of St. Pancras. When I was 11 I moved on to St. Paul's Catholic college. When I realised I was gay it presented a problem. I was never so deep into the faith, and being gay really drove me further away from it. Its only within the last few years that I've been able to reconcile with this. I'm not a Catholic, but I don't hate my roots anymore. I've found a way to work Mary and the Saints and some psalms into my practice in a coherent way. I've found connection with a few saints throughout my life, St. Nectan, St. Edmund, St. Benedict, all of them have aided in my magical path. I've been able to find the mysticism and magical nuance within the aspects of Catholicism I didn't shed, and it's only enriched my practice and life. I hope that those of you who follow me for 'viking' staves - many of which where created by Icelandic Catholic preists - will see that Catholic magic and the Church are separate entities and utilising saints and long dead bishops, canonised and uncanonised adds a lot to any Icelandic Folk practice. The island is a testament to a land in which Christianity and Paganism coexisted, even until today. So I'm lucky that my experience growing up Catholic and gay has been worked through and healed to a point that I can pray to Óðinn and Maria in the same breath. #christianmagic #icelandicmagic #icelandicfolkmagic #saints #mary #folkmagic #folkchristian #pagan #folkmagician #witchesoficeland #witchcraft #saintmagic

❇ New Painting ❇ • The Heralds of Winter • • Here's a sneaky peak of my latest A4 watercolour, pen and acrylic painting/illustration. It's finished - today I'll get it scanned and prints made. • To quote from the series of books I'm reading, "Winter is Coming" - (I'm sure many of you will recognise the motto) 🐺 • In the painting I purposefully and gratefully borrowed the Icelandic magical stave - vegvisir - as a symbol to help the bearer/viewer find their way through storms and rough weather, even when the way is not known. • Some pictures come easy - the recent cottage painting seemed to paint itself in about 4 hours, whereas I struggled with this. Maybe because I had a vague image in my mind of how I wanted it to be but making that physically happen on paper (with everything else going on in day to day life), is an entirely different thing! The only way to do it, though, is to do it. ❇😊❇ • • • • • • • • • • #watercolourpainting #watercolourillustration #watercolours #acrylicpainting #mixedmedia #illustration #instaart #symbolicart #magicalart #folkmagic #folkart #magicalsigils #icelandicfolkmagic #vegvisir #cottage #autumnwinter #popularculture #ukartists #artistlife

I'll be releasing them on my online store on the 21st of December. Krækilyng- Crowberry. Ruled by Saturn and Earth. Sacred to the goddess Hel and her father Loki. Crowberry brings awareness of cycles of light and darkness. As an allelopathic plant its saturnine virtues show themselves, hindering the growth of those around it. For this reason we work with it for binding and hindering. An excellent plant for works of concealment. As it sheds its leaves in 2 to 4 year cycles it offers us help in moving through tough transitions in life, including grief. This dual nature is a common theme across many plants in Icelandic magical herbalism. #icelandicfolklore #icelandicplants #crowberry #krækiberjalyng #iceland #icelandicfolkmagic #folkmagic #traditionalwitchcraft #nordicmagic #magicalherbalism #magicalherbs
