Mountain Witches 🏔️ According to Katla volcano folklore, a witch turned the mountain into a volcano. She was said to be a bad tempered old hag. She owned a pair of magic beeches and whoever put them on would be able to run as fast as the wind and not tire. Once a Shepard lost his sheep and borrowed her breeches to rave around and find the missing sheep. Outraged by the theft Katla drowned the Shepard in the whey where ppl drank and eventually found him, by then it was too late to find her as katla fled and threw herself into a glacier. A terrible flood occurred not long after caused by the angry witch who lived under the glacier, destroying farms and all the land around. Since then Katla has erupted regularly. In the Mountains of Gods This old Icelandic legend tells the tale of the waterfall’s name through a Viking leader named Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði. Þorgeir is said to have had thrown his Pagan statues into the waterfall, resulting in its name. Iceland has inspired me with its Nordic folklore and mythical legends. "Útiseta - the practice of sitting out is integral to Icelandic Folk Magic. Sitting out has been done in a few ways over the ages, Jón Árnason records a somewhat complex method from the later 19th century. Involving a grey woollen cloak, among other things. He recorded that it was said to only be performed at a crossroads with each road leading to a church. We, of course, know that you don't need anything besides your own self for practical útiseta. Sitting out on mounds to commune with the spirits within them. Sitting out in fields to glean information from the plants, rocks, and trees. Sitting out on a stone within a river to learn from the spirits of the waters. The location dictates the spirits you will communicate with, you're venturing into their homes. We don't do so lightly, of course, and it is first up to our own confirming divination and voiced questions to spirits if they wish us to undergo this practice within their spaces." I'm so excited to announce that I'll be presenting at the botanics obscura conference again in 2024 😍 I'm lucky enough to be part of a selection of some amazing presenters touching on some awesome subjects. I'll be presenting a class called "Jurtagaldur: Magical Herbalism in the Icelandic Tradition". Icelandic magical herbalism combines the use of magical plants, timings, staves, and more. In this lecture, Albert will break down a few examples of folkloric magic from Iceland involving certain plants and magical staves. From there, we take things a step further and work in UPG, personal staves from Albert and those around him, and methods of making magic with our own local plant allies. The combination of plants and staves is a powerful practical technique for sorcery, and one that we can fit to work for us no matter where in the world we may be." Shapeshifting is present in most paths of modern traditional witchcraft. Within Icelandic folk magic we take a few approaches to sending forth the fylgja in the form of an animal. Whether that be through staves, skins, herbs, the use of drums and more, Icelandic practitioners utilise these techniques with great success. We will take a look back to the fornmenn of old and their magical ability to send forth their spirits in the form of animals, to spy, harm and heal. We will then look at contemporary techniques, staves from the last 500 years and cover a little of the animistic ‘theology’ surrounding the Icelandic variation of the ancient practice. We will cover a few stories from Icelandic folklore that give us the practices we use today. Today marks the start of Einmánuður. The last month of winter in the old Icelandic calendar. In the old days this was a day of giving food to the poor and sharing with those who may need help getting through the last month of winter. This day also marks the vernal equinox. Spring is slowly springing in Iceland but not yet fully sprung. This month was known as the month of young men, much in keeping with the theme of spring awakening. Sometimes this first day of Einmánuður was referred to as vorinngöngudagur, the beginning of spring day. The day can be marked with lighting white candles to represent the return of the light. Partaking in any Ostara/Equinox springtide traditions you wish, and giving offerings to the land as well as donating to charities or otherwise helping to support your community. Folklore tells us that a wet Einmánuður means a good spring will follow. The month was traditionally greeted by this verse: "Einmánuður minn, minn gakk þú í bæinn. Vertu ekki úti vindinum vorlangan daginn". "Dear lone month, come on in. Dpmt stay out in the wind all the spring day long". Where we don't have a specific named spirit for this month, it's connection to young men may well give it the energy of the son of Gói and Þorri. Maríukross - Mary's Cross. This stave comes from the stave collection Lbs 5472. Not a whole lot is known of this stave, but it may well have been worked to honour the Virgin Mary. Due to this, in contemporary practice we utilise it for representing, calling on or channelling the virtues of the Virgin Mary. Within Iceland she is heavily assimilated with Freyja and Frigg (who may have been the same goddess). A home protection invoking the apotropaic virtues of reynir (rowan, mountain ash). Carve the stave into rowan wood then walk it three times around the boundary of your property. Then take the stave, redden it with your blood and place it above the inside of your front door. Ideally above the door frame. A stave to preserve the magical virtues of herbs. In Icelandic tradition a plant can lose its power if it is not properly harvested and cared for. I designed this stave to work to preserve the 'juice' of magical plants and strengthen their spirits before we utilise them in our work. This varnarkross - cross of protection is another stave recorded in the collection Lbs 5472. The cross is used as a protective amulet. It can be carved or burned into any protective wood, metal or bone. And worn as a talisman to ward off evil forces. The cross should be created and consecrated within the hour and day of the Sun and/or Mars. The month of Þorri has ended and today marks the start of Góa. Góa/Gói is personified as the daughter of Þorri. Another winter spirit though less harsh than her father. Sometimes she is referred to not as his daughter but his wife. The beginning of Góa normally arrives around the same days as the start of Lent. For this reason a smaller feast may well have been held, but nothing like Þorri. One custom from Northeast Iceland involves the woman of the house presenting her with an offering of red wool, to improve the weather. "Grimmur skyldi góudagurinn fyrsti, annar og hinn þriðji, þá mun hún Góa góð verða. Ef hún Góa gengur inn með glöðu sinni, heyrt hef ég í manna minni, hún mundi hrista úr kápu sinni." "Harsh shall be the first day of Góa, the second and the third, then Góa will be good. On February 1st and 2nd, many lights are lit. The day of Brighid, St. Bride and the return of the beginnings of spring down south. In Iceland, the 2nd of February is known as kyndilmessa (torch mass), kertamessa (candle mass), Ljósmessa (light mass) Surviving the reformation, this festival was known by many in Iceland even until more recent times. A special candle used to be kept by families, often made at or around Christmas. The candle was lit and burned in honour of the virgin Mary. Kyndilmessa is a day of weather predictions also, the folklorist Jón Árnason recorded this verse: "Ef í heiði sólsin sést á sjálfa kyndilmessu snjóa vænta máttu mest maður upp frá þessu". If the sun shines and the sky is clear on candlemas, one can expect snow to be on its way. Brighter days herald frost and snow in the coming month. Þorri - in the old Icelandic calendar was the middle of winter. Originally the name of the month may have derived from Þór but over time Þorri took on his own character as a personification of winter. Much like Grýla and the coming firgue of Góa, he was one of Icelands winter figures. And ruler of his month. Some stories and poems see him as a viking warrior, some as a ragged beggar, but mostly he appears as a somewhat misanthropic old man who should be recieved as a guest even though he may be demanding and bad tempered. If he is refused then he is sure to take his revenge in the form of bad weather. Þorrablót was likely a midwinter festival in pagan times but nowadays is celebrated in Iceland with feast of þorramatur ( traditional food, sheep head soup etc.), and drinking brennivín. Tonight due to bad weather my group can't gather, so we will celebrate from a distance. Greeting Þorri at the door like one is supposed to, with a plate of warm food and a shot of brennivín. Weather lore tells us that if the weather is poor on Þorri then the remainder of the winter months (Feb, March) will be marked by poor weather also. "Heill Þorri, heill og velkominn. In the old days bonfire were held and people would gather together for food and celebrations. If new years eve fell on a day of bad weather the the 13th was a second chance to celebrate. It is also the day the last of the yule lads goes back to the mountains. As well as a day that the huldufólk move house and can be found among us, sometimes at bonfires and celebrations with us. On this night cows are said to be able to speak human languages and it is a good night for útiseta if you can handle the cold. Galdrakerti með draumstafir 🕯 A magic candle with dream staves 🕯 These draumstafir all come from various collections of magical staves. These particular ones worked to aid in oneiromancy, dream divination. Divining the future via dreams is a central theme of Icelandic magic and something that with a little practice can become a very useful tool in one's magical arsenal. These staves were drawn onto the candle in red wax, the candle was then oiled with a blend of mugwort and draumagras (dream grass) horsetail. The black book. In many witchcraft and other magical traditions, the black book is a tool of great importance. Often developing their own spirit and personalities. These books are the stores of all the knowledge that makes up ones practice. The black book should be treated with respect and often taken with you on any voyage or journey. Many wizards and magicians of the past relied heavily on their books, and this long lasting tradition gives us the infamous likes of Rauðskinna, Gráskinna and the supposedly legendary Gullskinna. These books can be named, ensouled with various spirits and entities, and should contain all your tried and tested occult experiments. In Scandinavia and northern traditions these books are said to be given to practitioners by the man in black himself. Even within Iceland, a country without the same instilled fear of the devil as mainland Europe, the black books are said to be full of dark magic coming from Satan. Many Icelandic priests and wizards were said to travel to a black school, potentially located in France, and recieve their black books upon graduation, though not all who entered the school could leave.
