Nora has lived with Crohn's disease for the last almost 50 years of her life. She has been in and out of hospitals over the years for procedures ranging from colonoscopies to a bowel resection. For her most recent colonoscopy at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Nora was introduced to an app called @seamlessmd. This app allowed Nora to be in control of her pre- and post-procedure care, giving her peace of mind and empowering her with the knowledge she needed for prep and recovery at home. At 79 years old, Nora admitted to not being tech savvy, but found the app very straightforward and easy to use. She would 10/10 recommend it for anyone who has to have a procedure as it takes the guesswork out of receiving care and provides a source of information and direction for patients to be stewards of their own care. Happy #BeADonor Month! We recently had the privilege of hosting Eric, a remarkable patient who received a life-changing double lung transplant thanks to the generosity of an organ donor. Eric's journey is a testament to the power of organ donation and the incredible difference it makes in someone's life. Eric and representatives from @trilliumgift visited our surgical nurses to share his inspiring story and express their gratitude for the dedicated and compassionate care provided by our team. It was a truly touching moment that reminded us all of the profound impact our work can have on another person's life. In the last year alone, we had eight tissue donors (seven people gave the gift of sight and one person helped with research and education) and two organ donors (saving the lives of nine people on the transplant waitlist). We are committed to supporting organ donation and ensuring that more patients like Eric have the opportunity to receive the life-saving transplants they desperately need. Together, let's continue to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation and work toward saving even more lives! πŸ’™πŸ’š #oakvalleyhealth #markhamstouffvillehospital #uxbridgehospital #markham #markhamstouffville #stouffville #uxbridge #uxbridgeontario #torontohealth #healthcare #hospital #honouredtocare

Our President and CEO Jo-anne Marr recently shadowed one of our patient flow coordinators (PFC) at Markham Stouffville Hospital – an activity we like to call Walk in their Shoes. Here's what Jo-anne had to say about her time spent with Kristina Guzzo: "Being a PFC is not for the weak of heart. Kristina’s role is to support discharge planning and clear beds for the organization, while balancing the needs of patients and ensuring they are prepared and well supported on the rest of their care journey outside of the hospital. "Kristina’s job can certainly be challenging at times. Some discharge plans are straightforward and some are very complicated. She needs to consider many different factors – the patient and family needs, details of what each destination can offer, how the system works, etc. And sometimes these contributing factors can be contradicting. "But what makes Kristina so good at what she does is the strength of the relationships that she has cultivated as a PFC. Kristina interacts with many stakeholders and approaches each conversation with calm, confidence, and empathy. She is thoughtful and patient-centred. It is clear that she cares deeply about what she is doing. I definitely saw our values and our honoured to care culture in action." #oakvalleyhealth #markhamstouffvillehospital #uxbridgehospital #markham #markhamstouffville #stouffville #uxbridge #uxbridgeontario #torontohealth #healthcare #hospital #honouredtocare

Today is World Telecommunication and Information Society Day and we're recognizing our team of telecommunications clerks in the Telecommunications department. They are the voice you hear first when you call into the hospital and the voice heard over our PA system. They also ensure communication needs for emergency codes are distributed in an accurate and swift manner. For many patients, our telecommunications clerks are the voice of Oak Valley Health and we thank them for providing a positive customer experience. #WTISD #HonouredToCare

"I think many people can relate when I say that one of my biggest pandemic battles has been with my mental health. I realize that by helping others, I can also help myself. So each day I’ll spread a little kindness, and perhaps it’ll inspire someone else to do the same!" MSH Lactation Consultant Amanda Ho challenged herself to spread kindness by doing at least one selfless act a day for 30 days leading up to her 30th birthday. Donating blood, picking up garbage, checking in on a neighbour and encouraging food donations from her colleagues and friends were just some of the activities Amanda planned. Thank you Amanda. You are an example of our compassionate staff, who exemplify our #HonouredToCare culture!

A little kindness goes a long way. Our NICU and Childbirth & Children's Services team took it a step further and showed a whole lot of kindness to their colleagues! Recently, the team raised hundreds of dollars and put together snack carts for the Emergency Department, the ICU and our Respiratory Therapists. These acts of kindness, both big and small, are so important to the overall wellness of our teams. Thank you to all the staff for looking after one another. A great example of our #HonouredToCare culture.

The Ice Dragons, a local LEGO League Jr. team, have a personal connection to @mshospital. Their grandmother has been a long-term patient at the hospital. One of the themes they're focusing on this year is to be mindful about health during the pandemic, a time when they can no longer partake in their usual activities, such as tournaments and other special events. With that in mind, they wanted to give their thanks to the health care workers who have been part of their grandmother's circle of care. Earlier this week, they presented us with a homemade poster to offer their gratitude to the teams at MSH. Thank you! #HonouredToCare

Jeannette’s kindness, thoughtfulness and contagious energy is an example of our #HonouredToCare culture in action. SWIPE ➑️ to see some of her beautiful work. 😍

When a patient comes into the hospital, their first point of contact is often a registration clerk – and in many cases its Leona Mendonca. Leona is a registration clerk in the Emergency Department and main registration at Markham Stouffville Hospital. . And although, you may not be able to see it nowadays, there is a perpetual smile #behindthemask and gleaming warm eyes that welcome patients into the hospital and put them at ease before their appointment. . In her own words β€œI care about every patient I register and do my utmost to ensure I give them the best service. Especially now, when many family members are not allowed to be with their loved ones, we are the patient's family during their time at MSH.” . Leona has been with MSH for five years but has been working in health care for 27 years. Throughout all those years, she has modelled herself after her role-model, her late father. She strives to live by the personal values of integrity, respect, loyalty and kindness. . In her spare time, you can find Leona, a local Markham resident, staying active by walking or biking through the many trails in Markham. #Honouredtocare #BehindTheMask

"I admire Rosemarie's knowledge and courage to speak out for nursing and speak out for the health of her patients.” . We know it can be scary for children to visit the hospital even at the best of times. But with #COVID19 making masks mandatory, not being able to see your health care worker's face can make a visit even more stressful. Our paediatricians are proudly wearing buttons with their non-masked faces to help alleviate fear in our youngest patients. #honouredtocare

Our Virtual Monitoring Services (ViMos) is another example of how we’re providing innovative virtual care options for our patients! ViMos is a patient-centred self-management program that provides remote monitoring and clinical support for patients with chronic conditions. Patients use a tablet and tools to measure their vital signs in the comfort of their own home and this information is automatically sent to their care team to monitor their condition, prevent flare-ups and reduce the risk of emergency visits. More information can be found on our website (link in bio). . #carebeyondourwalls #honouredtocare
