Visiting the cathedral #stdenis was one of the most spectacular experiences of our trip. The light, the windows! The vaults stretch upwards and give such an air of majesty. When I read the #kingsbridgetrilogy by @kenfollettauthor I loved the descriptions of Jack Cherbourg and his journey in France. Including his time at St Denis. I spent time reading about the construction and #abbotsuger and knew I definitely didn't want to miss seeing the cathedral. We visited the crypt, the remains of most of the French monarchs rest in St Denis. The marble statues are quite breathtaking in their beauty. The choir stalls are finely carved too. There is stained glass ranging from modern windows to 12th century glass. If you get the chance to visit, do it! Another little time hop! On our second day we visited @museepicassoparis, a special request from mum. Not that I had any objection! There is always time for #picasso The museum is beautifully laid out, with spacious, airy galleries. It wasn't overcrowded, or uncomfortable to walk around at all. Which made it much easier to enjoy the visual feast laid out. I particularly liked #lhommemouton, both the sculpture and the preparatory works. Today was all about art. Two galleries in one day? Hard on the legs, but we did it. I'm really going backwards here, as we visited the @mahjparis later in the afternoon... But no matter! I highly recommend a visit to anyone, the collection is astounding. We were there particularly to see the #marcchagall paintings (three on display) as mum adores Chagall. But I could have spent much longer... The sculpture by #chanaorloff, l'enfant Didi, was looted during the occupation and only came to light in 2008. Finally returned to the family, it is so touching, so tender a portrait of her son. Really incredibly moving. The funerary steles were discovered during excavation work in the city, and date to the 12th and 13th centuries. As well as carousels, we spent a large part of yesterday exploring @cathedrale_de_chartres, truly one of the most spectacular cathedrals I've visited. The carvings, the glass, the sense of space and soaring vaults... They all add up to a sense of awe and wonder. I spent a long time walking around the #choirscreen, which is exquisitely carved with the story of Mary and her son. From the presentation in of the virgin, to nativity and ascension. Some of the most beautiful carvings I've ever seen. Mum focused on the #stainedglass, her particular love. We had binoculars with us to look in detail at the windows, which I do suggest anytime you visit a church. There are so many humorous details, tiny stories, all nearly impossible to pick out with bare eyes. I particularly loved the panel showing the masons and cathedral builders at work... I thought of @natashasmithstonecarving when I saw it! The beautiful #virginmary in pale blue is one of the oldest pieces of glass surviving, the blue of her robes is made from cobalt. We could have spent longer, and hope to return next year. Trip to Scotland, part one! On November 12th, J and I went up to Scotland , Glasgow to be exact. The primary reason for the trip was to go see Melanie Martinez at the Hydro but as she's no longer in school and my best friend lives up there and kindly let us stay, we decided we'd make it a full week. We fit SO much into 5 days. On the Monday we decided to go to a couple of museums in Glasgow. J loves animals, specifically marine animals, so the Hunterian Zoology Museum at Glasgow Uni was a great way to fill some time. We also had a wander around the uni; it looks like Hogwarts! After a bite to eat at the famous University Cafe, we went to Kelvingrove Museum which is a firm favourite from the last time I took J and W. More animals plus art, history, science, lots of interesting things. After we took a stroll into Finnieston to visit the Hidden Lane. It's a gorgeous, little place with unique shops and cafes. Unfortunately because we went on Monday most places were closed. However, we did go to the quaint and quirky Hidden Lane Tearooms and had lovely tea and hot chocolate. We'll definitely be going back! This was just Monday! Yesterday we had a brilliant trip to @newlanark World Heritage site to learn about the Victorian mill there and the mill workers who worked there and what their living conditions were like. We saw the water wheel that provided the energy to run the machines, the weaving machines and where they processed the cotton, the mill workers houses and the amazing school room. We also went around the interactive tour that told the story of Annie Mcleod who was born in 1810 and at age 10 worked 10.5 hours a day, six days a week with only 2 days holiday a year! It really brings learning and education to like visiting places like this. ☀️A very happy day out in Kensington on a home-educators trip to the Royal Albert Hall for a music and maths workshop organised by the inspirational @teambayayi My two girls went as they are KS2 age and said they absolutely loved it. I have so many happy memories of this area of London as opposite the Albert Hall is the Royal College of Music where I studied and met my lovely husband and some wonderful friends like @tess.who 💕💕 While the girls were in the workshop I took my two boys (and @afiabayayi ‘s adorable little girly 💕) to Hyde Park to see some nature and enjoy the wonderful weather outdoors. Bodmin Jail, Cornwall. It has changed so much since our last visit. There are now digital screens that tell the stories of prisoners from their crimes to their sentence. I think for the kids this new approach was far more interesting. Nice trip to the theatre to watch ‘the little mermaid - The circus’ at the Lowry today. It was lots of fun although Lincoln got very frightened at the scene where there was a storm and pretend lightening and we had to go and sit outside for five minutes and have lots of cuddles to calm him down and reassure him he was ok. Lots of Duchenne boys show traits such as sensitivity to light/dark, loud noises. His body works over time to make his muscles work just to do everyday things. A comparison that I was told by one of his consultants is for example if you have toothache and you hear aloud bang you are extra sensitive to it despite that not being what is hurting you. This is the same for Lincoln. Pretty much everything in the body is controlled by muscles and therefor he is hyper sensitive to the environment around him. He will often switch off and not respond if there is lots going on I think although to some degree this is normal for a toddler I also think it’s a coping mechanism for his body. Finally embarking on the little train at the Blists Hill Victorian town to go inside the clay mine. It was very dark, very atmospheric, but the children paid all their attention to the little film played inside the mine about how adults and children used to work there and asked lots and lots of questions about it. At the end they were allowed to sit in front if the little train to look at the control buttons and even beep the horn! ☺️ Unfortunately they weren't offered a job in the mine as they weren't 5 yet (the official age you were officially allowed to go&work in the mine for a wage), but if they spoke to the "right" people they may be allowed earlier 😬 On a serious note, we need to be grateful that our children have a childhood.
