Whoo hoo! I've had my second quilt finish for 2024 ... Eiderdown Diamonds! . I was making these hexagon diamonds right about when Judy Newman's Eiderdown fabric line was released, and I knew they would be perfect as background squares. I purchased 50cm of each of the designs available at my local quilt shop, and added in 3 fabrics from my stash, to make up the 64 background blocks I needed. . I quilted this one by machine in a 2" grid, in a nod to the old eiderdown, but my brain still needed to see some handquilting. So it got some! . I v e been quilting for 35 years + in the past I rarely quilted or crocheted for myself. I have gifted too many quilts + afghans to count but it has brought me so much joy to see my gifts being used by my loved ones. Recently, I realized I haven’t created many treasures for myself. My heart has felt so heavy + it’s sore from the last three years. So I’ve been diving into quilt making, gardening, + crochet for me. I’ve been doing the things that soothe my soul. So the last few years have been all about me. I love walking into my room + seeing a stack of my makes grow. Seeing them is a reminder of where I am in my life at the moment. I’m in a season of grace + love for self. I feel uncomfortable even writing those words + it’s taken me decades to understand that I am allowed to give myself those things too. I’m so ready to give my love + offer grace so easily to others, but I’m tight fisted with myself. I really want to work on that. So today, I gift another quilt to myself. It’s made of scraps from years of quilting. Each fabric piece holds stories of love + celebration. Despite having made a lot of things in my life, very few of it ever makes it into a frame. When it does, it usually indicates it’s leaving my home for someone else’s 😂 I finished off this sample from the Mini Mod Class I took this month, hosted by @davidowenhastings, with the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild. I always learn all sorts of little tips and tricks in classes and this one was no different. 👏 As soon as I realized the scale of these little individual mini-quilts, I knew I had a frame in mind. Like many artists, I’m guilty of occasionally pre-buying materials without a specific use or direction. 😅This floating frame caught my eye at a thrift store a couple years ago and has been patiently waiting for its perfect match. IT’S DONE!!! I finished the last stitches of the binding while we were in the basement for the tornado watch 🌪️. Just finished from the Blue Bird quilt kit by @janeteclare I’m not a fan of iron on applique so I quilted the design using navy blue thread. The motifs are lotus flowers, feathers, and hearts. The half square triangle designs are based on quilt designs in the kit instructions. Over 410 meters of hand quiltingsnd I enjoyed every stitch Kit bought from @cottonpatchuk . This is traditional hand quilting. There are different types of quilting stitches for a variety of different quilting effects. Big stitch quilting is not the same as traditional hand quilting, and the two are not the only ways to finish a top into a quilt. I'm not saying that either way is wrong, because ultimately it's your quilt. (Except this one-it's mine!) You can go to a quilt museum and inspect antique quilts to see what really good traditional hand quilting looks like. I'm a confident beginner at this point. Big stitch quilting and other techniques like cross stitches and fly stitching have a place at the table. I do get concerned sometimes that we could lose the art of traditional hand quilting though. And I definitely think we need to use the right terms for each technique so as not to lose skills. I promise that big stitch and hand quilting are not the same effect on a quilt. Even the needles used are different! Again, they have a place at the table! I wouldn't do away with either one or the plethora of other finishing techniques. As part of #lastsewiststanding2024 I've been trying to use up bits and pieces as well as my garment fabric stash and this is the result. I've pieced both back and front to try to make it double sided - please swipe to see the back. I machine pieced and then hand quilted using variegated thread. Oh, today is just a terrible day for my creativity 🙈😅 I’m experiencing the quilter’s equivalent of writer’s block, and I couldn’t be any more bummed because today is my *one* day this week to have any chance at time enough to make headway with new projects. Being gone 12 hours a day is taxing. The irony is that I dream of all these fancy quilt related projects during the week and then get locked in, creatively, on the weekends 😑😮💨 The Sweetgum quilt was born during a period of frenetic activity; a time of creative explosion. This generally happens after a dye sesh. Or a trip. Something that just inspires and ignites that fusion of energy. I couldn’t stop on the Sweetgum. Or the High Desert Bloom. Sharing these quilted pot holders I made for @thatfancyname sometime during the pandemic, when she went into her baking phase. I thought these would be cute thingies to carry baked casseroles in. In the red holder, the black strap goes through the two loops on the opposite ends. It sounds complicated, but it is not. The red one is Christmas themed, while the black and purple one is for ordinary time. Some day, Mishelle will either send me better pics of them/make a reel of how to use them/send me baked goods. My second #TrianglePouch is finished. The making of it is slightly addictive and I had to talk myself out of making another one. I used a sturdy white denim fabric (upholstery sample) as the lining and it feels more “robust” than the linen one. All my sewing kit items for hand piecing fit perfectly in it. I love stitching wholecloth quilts and they don’t have to have traditional or classic designs. I did this one a long time ago and i vaguely recall a paper pattern but it appears to be lost. The fabric is a thin, plain cotton, the batting/wadding that fluffy polyester and the thread Mettler’s quilting. The quilt is entirely handquilted and hand finished. It measures 18 1/2” x 15”. 🪡 It can be difficult to catch the stitching on wholecloths, hence the odd angle of the photograph and the contast with the other quilts piled below. #quilts #quilting #handquilted #handquilting #handfinished #handsewing #whiteworkquilt #mettlerquiltingthread
The impossible quilt 2-1/2 years ago I was so excited to join the ladies quilting group here in Oaxaca, Mexico. Just maybe I’d improve my Spanish AND redeem my families sewing skills since I was a sewing flunk out. 🫣 I arrived with fabric at the ladies quilting circle to find I had chosen linen in place of cotton. I was told”this will not work”. And so… i put it away for another day. Each time I went to my fabric stash I’d pass by this fabric and finally one night I decided that nothing is impossible and I’m gonna make an embroidery stitched quilt, I’m gonna make something out of the box… never say never! And so I did. My teacher, Mary Lou, a missionary who’s here teaching the locals to sew by hand (a Mano) has always said, “It’s your project, you’re decision. Don’t let others dictate your creativity “. She also said, “Some mistakes are expected when you quilt by hand, it’s the mark of a hand made project, never perfect”. 🤩 Being okay with my small mistakes and not perfection is a lesson in itself, acceptance and pride in the good and creative work I did is what I need to celebrate. Final touches! This week’s evenings are all about the binding on my #smittenquilt, I have half the whip stitching left and cannot wait. I’m binding it in the same fabric as my backing and love how it looks so far (if I do say so myself). I even managed to cut and sew the bias binding to the quilt all in one evening, can you tell I’m in a mission to complete it?! Hoping to lint roller the Lucas hairs that are already all over it and take some photos of the final product this weekend, before it’s safely stowed away on my quilt ladder. Does anyone else have that problem, when they’ve spent too much time on something for it to actually be used? 😂 . .
