Despite existing only 14 years, the theatre was the venue for the premiers of no less than 350 theatrical works. Perhaps the most important premiere, which took place exactly 229 years ago, was the magic flute, performed by no other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself. While Mozart conducted the orchestra,Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the Libretto, played Papageno. The role of the Queen of the Night was performed by Mozart's sister-in-law Josepha Hofer. We can assume that none of the members of the audience imagined that Mozart would die shortly after, On the 5th of December 1791. We are talking about George Frideric Handel. In 24 days, this brilliant composer managed to create a masterpiece which was finished on the 14th of September 1741.
