Made some simple strawberry jam today from my own strawberry patch! Only three ingredients - my own wildflower honey from a couple years back, strawberries and a little lemon juice. I wanted to try a no sugar, pectin free jam just to see what it was like. It's definitely not as thick as sugar and pectin jam, but since it usually goes on pancakes, that works for me! It makes me so happy to make my own food that's healthy and tasty. More iris's are blooming! So I looked up the cultivars, in case you want to try and find them for your own garden. My biggest, most detailed project ever...I present the Strawberry Fairy Home, made 100% out of soap. Some people don't see the point in something so impractical as a gingerbread house made of soap. That's ok, I didn't do it for anyone else but myself. I love creating with soap. It's a challenge. It teaches me patience. It lets me go places with my imagination that even I don't always expect. I also want to inspire. I don't care if you're a beginner or advanced, not good at any particular hobby or craft, just haven't found your "thing" yet...or like me have way too many of them. Brinsea incubators are a fabulous cabinet incubator and ours has been a workhorse for over 5 years now. At the moment we are only hatching turkey eggs with a few chicks to increase the survivability of the turkey poults (they learn to eat and drink better with a few chicks around) but later this year we will also hatch chicks specifically. Anyone looking for some poults? So far it looks like we have one Black Spanish, some Rusty Gray's, a few either Bronze Narragansett or Bronze Bourbon, and several Bronze and Narragansett to choose from. Sometimes the color patterns are difficult to tell apart until they feather out. Haven't heard of some of those colors? I also worked on my kitchen and medicinal herb garden today. Trying to get it prepped for new plants and wood chips to be spread. I pulled SO.MUCH.COMFREY. out of this bed. I potted up the small ones and some of the bits of roots I found that should grow into new plants. I will have these to sell once they get over being removed. I transplanted even more larger comfrey plants to more ideal locations along fences so the animals can nibble them without hurting them. These are nitrogen fixing plants, mineral miners, and their big purple flowers are favorites of both honey bees and bumblebees. Any new fruit trees we put in our orchard - we are doing an update to the orchard this year too - will get some comfrey, clover and other beneficial plants to help nourish the new young trees. More on creating tree guilds later... So, I spent a good deal of time outdoors in the dirt today, which I enjoyed thoroughly! Wood chip mulch has been the greatest thing for our farm. Sandy, silty, rocky, dead land has turned into dark, moist, rich soil, teeming with earthworms and growing things that gave up and died before. It has been a long time transformation. There are still some things that still won't produce, but the things that do tend to bury us in bounty. These are aronia berries, also known as chokecherries. They are high in vitamin C, have medicinal uses and are supposed to be a native to our area. I harvested a bunch of wild bergamot this morning and put it in the dehydrator to save for tea later this year. Wild bergamot is tasty in Italian dishes when fresh as it has similar flavor profile to oregano and thyme. New cria has arrived!! She was pretty cold and muddy this morning so we brought her in briefly for a warm rinse and stylish blow out before donning her red cape and getting breakfast from mama. It's chilly out even with the bright sunshine and crias can't regulate their own temperature for a few days after being born. Turkey eggs have pretty much filled my incubator. The first batch should hatch in about two weeks...let me know if you need some poults for your farm! These are barnyard mix...they could be Slates, Bourbons, Bronze or Narragansett...or any combo of these. There are are few chicken eggs to hatch alongside the turkeys in there as well. We find that the chicks teach the turkeys to eat and drink and we have a higher survival rate when there are a few chicks in the mix. A couple more rematches underway... In case you are wondering, I generally have a few soap batches that don't turn out throughout the year. Maybe the colors morphed, the fragrance seized the batch, or something else happened that made the soap something I don't want to sell. I also end up with a lot of end cuts and trims that aren't suitable for confetti soap...or I just have a mountain of them. Rebatching gives these soaps a second chance at soapy greatness. Fragrances I can't use elsewhere due to discoloration or seizing, can be used in rebatches. Fabulous oil or additive combinations can create soaps sometimes nicer on your skin than even my fresh batches! I rebatch in a crockpot with additional water or beer added to re-hydrated cured soap and once everything is melted together and smooth, I can add a new fragrance, mix and plop in a mold. The cure time for these soaps is much shorter as well! Hubby's leather working has begun! He wanted to make a decent pair of leather gloves for working around the farm. He got a pattern, made a glove, didn't like the pattern and spent all night re-engineering a better pattern and voila! He now has a glove that he feels is closer to what he wants to make. Banana bread is nostalgic and yummy, so when Beth told me she was making a cookie version, I was intrigued. These cookies turned out softer than a traditional cookie. Made a couple soaps on New Year's Day, and this one is called Twilight Tea and Amber. I love the marbling effect and the glints of gold in the mica lines really make this soap pop. Describing the smell for me is a little like the spices in chai tea with an undertone of cream. The notes are described as a sweet mix of chamomile, bergamot, cocoa, cinnamon, rose, amber, moss, musk, and sandalwood. Ever seen a blue pumpkin? Or a round Hubbard squash? This unique squash looks to be a cross between a pumpkin and a Hubbard squash. It's shaped like a pumpkin, but the inside is thicker like a Hubbard...I wanted to take a picture to show y'all but hubby was in a hurry for pie and processed this one himself before I knew it! He made a big pie and two smaller ones from this one squash...then we seasoned and roasted the seeds. Yum! I wasn't aware of this, but ALL squash seeds are edible and quite tasty! They are also very good for you, nutritionally. Today is a great day! One of our favorite cows calved with a huge bull calf. Molly waited until Farmer Hubby checked on her, then when he thought nothing was happening and came back to the house, proceeded to surprise him during the 🌄 ring milking with this lil guy. My youngest daughter has a birthday this month, so she has secured the "Rights of Naming". He has been dubbed "Chaps" for his white legs. Welcome Chaps! Congrats to Molly on another beautiful calf. I love squash. I know it isn't everyone's jam, but I love them. And I am gonna have a few squash posts we are getting processed here on the farm for a while! Today I am featuring butternut squash. These are super versatile squash that you can do a LOT of tasty dishes with. You can make them into a pie - just like pumpkins - soup, scallop them like scalloped potatoes, or eat them simply with butter and cinnamon or salt and pepper. I am blanching mine because I am planning to can them. I have a lot of them. Like 25. And they aren't your small supermarket cuties that weigh a pound or two...the LIGHTEST one I have weighed in at 5 pounds. In the huge pot pictured, I have only three squash and it is about 2/3 full. One of our favorite things to do each fall is making cider! It was raining outside, so this year we had to bring the cider press in the house. We got several gallons of delicious, sweet apple cider! While some of the apples have come off our own trees on the farm, this year we had a late frost that forced us to bring in apples from another farm...but the cider is delicious nonetheless! Our mix included primarily Jonagolds, with a smattering of Jonathon, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp and Gala apples...it is so yummy! With the cold snap coming in, we made mulled cider to make the house smell awesome and keep our souls cozy. It's cold outside and Toph decided my cozy crochet was perfect for her to snuggle under! Toph is one of our house cats (as opposed to a barn cat) and is queen of her domain. Butter is a fairly simple creation...and I love butter. However, my son met a gal who made cultured butter, and taught us how...now I find I love it even more. It's somehow sweeter than the regular variety, but it usable in all the same ways. We have had it on bread, popcorn, made coffee cake with it...it's AWESOME. With the fall rainy season descending upon us, we have been working hard to create some erosion controls along one of our boundary fences. We have so many dead trees that had to be taken down in this pasture alone, that we utilized some of them in a huglekutur style barrier. The trees, branches and other debris such as leaves and wood chips are covered with dirt and used to assist with erosion controls and soil improvement, although it is a slow process for the latter. Most of the time we use the dead trees as firewood, but this year we have more than we need already. The conservation department says a virus is hitting oak trees pretty hard the last few years, and we can certainly see the aftermath in our forested areas. The white oaks seem to be fine, but most of our red oaks are looking pretty bad. When washing your cat laundry, be sure to use your gentlest cycle, as they are delicate! Laundry day never seems to end on the farm, and these three kittens curled up for a nap in one of my loads. Top of the picture is Froad, middle is Mochi and the one keeping an eye out is Dango. All females and all looking for a loving home...other than mine! Froad and Mochi are bob tails, and Froad actually is missing some bones were her bob tail would be...it gives her a "hoppy" gait that earned her the name of Froad, because we could decide if she looked more like a toad or frog when she runs! They all love to play, as kittens do at this stage. They have never been outside, but once fixed they certainly could be indoor/outdoor kitties. They all love snuggles and cuddles too! Rough cut on one of the Autumn Spice bars. Also, in order to keep the soap fluid enough to even TRY to make these with beer soap, I have to use A LOT of extra fluids. No "water discounts" for those familiar with soaping terms. Otherwise you get layers or solids, because the sugars in the beer heat the soap up so fast that it goes to super thick trace or seizes and starts to gel in the bowl. Learning to do these super intricate swirls and ombres in a beer soap is VERY challenging and, at times, frustrating. I have to select my fragrances to not only suit the color of the beer, but also the intricacy of the design. And even with the best planning, the design may flop. But one thing is nice...I still get usable soap at the end of creating it, regardless. I did use the Luna Swirls soap challenge on all the soaps last night, but due to the nature of the beer I had ready, I couldn't get the near white ombre the challenge required between color changes. But it it still pretty. And I got to try two new ways to make this swirl with limited success. Taking a break from soap making yo whip out a few lip balms...eleven new flavors, actually! Pineapple Colada, Margarita, Root Beer, Cotton Candy, Choco-Mint, Pineapple, Candy Apple, Peach, Watermelon, Strawberry, and Bacon...which that last one is actually a smokey, maple bacon and I think it's great. 😆 These are all packed into our white compostable paperboard push tubes so when you are done with them, toss them in the compost bin! The ingredient list is pretty short...olive oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, bees wax, vitamin E and flavoring. So many pretty blooms around the farm right now...I don't think I remember a summer that was this colorful! Even my hostas are blooming! Usually I have an entry way garden that has a lot of coleus and impatiens but the garden center didn't have a lot of them available this year for some reason...instead I opted for more perennials and I am so glad I did. Did some more spinning on Flora last night...this time I spun and plied yellow floofs. I really wish I had more of this color, but I had enough to ply at least one bobbins worth, so there is that! I will need to set the twist on the yarns I have made and measure them to see what I have to work with...then decide what to make with them! The blue one is aching to be a baby blanket, but the yellow...it hasn't really told me what it wants to be yet. Plus it's my favorite color, so I want to do something I will enjoy with it! Spin and plyed another pair of batts from Southard Long Wools last night. Now I have two bobbins full and another on the way with the two batts next to the bobbins. My hubby watched me spin these and thought I was going pretty fast...but in truth it goes fast because I am spinning bulky yarn. I can't seem to get super thin stuff...but these make cozy scarves, hats and even baby blankets. I am still practicing and I love to spin, even if I don't get much time to do so. Farm report: We have had two calves born in the last couple of days and purchased a third to feed extra milk to...the only heifer is Alex, out of Lion...and they have matching heart shaped spots - squee! The spots on her other side look similar to a creeper face, for you Minecraft fans. The two dark calves are both bulls, and you would think they are twins, their coloration is so similar. Harvey is from our cow, Doxie, however.
