Před 78 lety se narodil André René Roussimoff, francouzskej wrestler a herec známej jako André the Giant. Tehnle pán byl takovou hříčkou přírody a svým zjevem byl prostě nezapomunetlnej. Takže něco málo o něm. André se narodil ve francouzským Coulommiers do katolický rodiny přistěhovalců. Jeho otec Boris byl Bulhar, matka Mariann Polka. Měl dva starší a dva mladší sourozence. Když se André narodil, vážil 6 kg. Už od rannýho dětství vykazoval známky gigantismu. Byl minimálně o hlavu vyšší než běžný dítě a měl abnormálně dlouhý ruce. Jeho rodiče měli normální výšku, ale údajně jeho děda měl 234 cm. A geny nevychčiješ žejo. Když měl André 12 let, měřil už 191 cm. Pracoval nejprve na otcově farmě, kde zvládl práci za tři chlapy. Taky dělal se dřevem a ve fabrice na obraceče sena. V 18 letech se odstěhoval do Paříže, kde si ho vyhlídl (André prostě přehlídnout nešel) Robert Lageat, kterej sháněl wrestlery. André se po nocích učil wrestling a ve dne makal, aby měl z čeho žít. Pod jménem Géant Ferré začala jeho wrestlerská kariéra. O dva roky později už vystupoval ve Velké Británii Asutrálii, na Novým Zélandě i v Africe. V Japonsku byl znám jako Monster Roussimoff. André se přestěhoval do Kanady, kde si udělal svou novou personu se jménem André The Giant. Byl neuvěřitelně oblíbenej a zápasil s nejslavnějšíma wrestlerama tehdejší doby včetně Hulka Hogana. Sbíral tituly jak pokémony a začal být po něm zájem i u filmu kvůli jeho naprosto unikátnímu vzhledu. Měřil 225 cm, vážil 240 kg a byl to takovej vysmátej ošklivák. Vidět ste ho mohli třeba v Conan the Destroyer nebo výborný komedii The Princess Bride. Taky si zahrál třeba v seriálu Zorro. André uměl taky dost chlastat. Prý dokázal vypít 119 piv (v přepočtu 41 l) za šest hodin. Jednou taky vypil během jednoho večírku 156 piv (73 l). André the Giant měl kvůli svý velikosti a životnímu stylu zdravotní problémy. Nakonec zemřel na selhání srdce ve spánku ve věku 46 let. Jeho popel byl roptýlen na jeho ranči v Ellerbe v Severní Karolíně. Perucetus colossus - the biggest of all time? In August 2023, Perucetus colossus was officially described as a "heavyweight early whale" and potentially the heaviest animal of all time with a mean estimated body mass of 180 tons. This made me curious. So curious that I spent lots of time with the paper and the underlying calculations. I also had some very interesting exchanges with @palaeojac and based my illustrations on their model! (Go and check the account!) So here is my Perucetus - study. The topmost animal is displayed as shown in the paper published in 2023 (slide 2). The animal in the middle is similar to the sneak peek @palaeojac gave us already (slide 3). The animal at the bottom is my very own interpretation (slide 4). Comparing Perucetus with extant cetaceans like the blue whale and also adapting the size of the head (relative to Cynthiacetus), I want to propose my very first alternative model to an extinct species. I propose a weight of around 60 tons and a not-that-bulky appearance. Also, the fins are a bit bigger than initially proposed. Ever heard of medical research that combines endocrinology, genetic disease, medical history, local folklore and legends, and epidemiology? 📜🧚 An MRC-funded study established a unique set of findings about gigantism in Northern Ireland - the discovery started at Dr Korbonitis’ Endocrine Outpatient clinic at Bart’s Hospital in 2008 when a young man presented with early-onset acromegaly and a family history of gigantism. ☘️ ➡️ Dr Korbonitis’ tam identified a mutation in a gene called AIP. Korbonitis asked formal permission to take a DNA sample from the skeleton of an 18th century patient with gigantism in the Royal College of Surgeons Hunterian Museum, called the “Irish giant”. 🦴 She identified the same DNA mutation in four living Irish families with gigantism as well as in the DNA of the 18th century giant, proving the common origin - AIP. 🧬 Dr Korbinitis established that the gene has been present in the area probably for 1500 years and this may correspond to the fact that Ireland’s folklore has long been preoccupied with giants and Ulster’s numerous landmarks mentions giants. #IrishGiant #Gigantism #MedicalResearch

At age 18, Rainer's height was only 4 feet 8.3 inches, placing him within the category of dwarfism. However, in his 20s, he began experiencing unprecedented growth due to acromegaly, a condition often caused by a benign tumor on the pituitary gland, leading to an excessive production of growth hormone. This resulted in Rainer growing to an astounding height of approximately 7 feet 8 inches by his late 30s. Unlike typical acromegaly cases, Rainer's growth plates had not yet fused when his condition developed, allowing for his remarkable increase in height. His life was fraught with health issues, including severe spinal problems and impaired vision and hearing, culminating in his death in 1950. Před 74 lety zemřel Adam Reiner, trpaslík a obr zároveň. Ne nejebe mi. Tenhle rakušák je jediným zaznamenaným člověkem v historii, který trpěl nanismm a gigantismem současně. Jak je to možný? Adam Rainer se narodil v roce 1899. Jeho rodiče byli normálně velcí. Adam se z počátku vyvíjel jako každý normální děcko, ale jeho růst se brzo zastavil. V osmnácti měl jenom nějakých 122,5 cenťáků, což není mnoho. Nakonec se jeho výška zasekla na 135 cm. Měl malé, hubené tělo, ale abnormálně obrovský ruce a chodidla. Adama pro jeho výšku odmítla vojenská komise, když chtěl narukovat do 1. světové války. Doktoři mu diagnostikovali nanismus. Adam chtěl moc do armády a ještě víc si přál vrůst. Během deseti let vyrostl o celej metr. Adam už nebyl trpaslíkem, ale obrem. Měřil 235 cm. S velkou mocí přichází i velká zodpovědnost. A s velkou výšku mrda zdravotních problémů. I když v tomhle případě je to spíš obráceně. Se zdravotníma probléma přišla právě velká výška. Adam měl vzácnou hormonální poruchu akromegalii. Ta způsobuje nadměrnej růst kostí i tkání. Adam dokonce podstoupil chirurgickej zákrok. Při kterým mu byl odstraněn hypofyzární nádor, který poruchu způsoboval. Původně se zdálo, že růst byl zastaven. Ale jenom na chvilku. Adam dál rostl, ale díkybohu ne tak rychle. Jeho zdravotní stav byl ale v prdeli. Oslepl, ohluchl na levý ucho a měl tak zdeformovanou páteř, že musel být upoután na lůžko. Adam zemřel v 51 letech. Kvůli svýmu neobvyklýmu vývoji je tak jediným zaznamenaným člověkem v lékařský historii, kterej se z trpaslíka stal obrem. No na hovno to měl, co si budem. The Ichnological Park of Penha Garcia, located in Geopark #Naturtejo (Portugal), hosts the largest #trilobite burrow - over 20 cm wide! These ichnofossils dominate fossil associations characterized by arthropod burrows, tunnels, and trackways, as well as 'worm burrows' (Skolithos piperocks), all set within a shallow marine palaeoenvironment. Together with Carlos Neto de Carvalho, I carried out a preliminary quantitative comparison between the Cruziana ichnospecies from Penha Garcia and the trilobite communities from the Middle Ordovician of Canelas. The aim was to establish a genetic relationship and potential trophic migratory paths across trilobite ontogenesis. The gregarious behavior commonly found in discrete beds totally covered by Cruziana is explained under the trilobite clustering paleobiology, with detritus-feeding (and/or scavenging) congregations. The large body size inferred for some of the Cruziana trilobite producers could be correlated with the high latitude position of Penha Garcia on the Gondwana shores during the Ordovician period, the diversification and abundance of food resources, and the capacity to thrive in oxygen-depleted substrates. This may have resulted in polar #gigantism among trilobites. In her early 20s, Kristin’s body started exhibiting changes that she could not explain. She started gaining weight mysteriously, noticing that her hands and face were growing larger. Over the years this mystery intensified, even her tongue and internal organs were growing. Kristin sought help from many doctors, but was repeatedly accused of being an obese hypochondriac. Doctors were quick to lay blame at Kristin’s feet, while none recognized the rare disorder that was hiding in plain sight. Kristin has acromegaly, a disease caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland that produces growth hormone. When this disease develops in childhood it leads to extreme height, and is called gigantism. But when an adult develops this tumor they do not gain height, instead the bones of their hands, face and feet expand, causing significant changes to their appearance. Since these changes happen slowly it usually takes many years to get a diagnosis, and unfortunately it took Kristin over 20 years to get diagnosed. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast, Kristin discusses her decades long journey with acromegaly. After years of searching for an explanation for why her body was changing so dramatically, she met a neurologist who took one look at her face and immediately knew what was happening. Kristin soon learned that her pituitary tumor had been growing for so long that it was wrapped around her carotid artery and wouldn’t be operable if it grew any larger, which could be fatal. She rushed to emergency surgery, and the tumor was removed successfully. Suddenly relieved from an excess of growth hormone, it took years for Kristin’s body to adjust. Although this process has been extremely difficult and painful, Kristin is grateful to have survived. On the left is a drawing of the skeleton of a 19th century Italian actor named Ghirlenzoni. He died at age 64 and his body was autopsied by an Italian physician named Vincenzo Brigidi who found that there was a pituitary gland tumor present. This autopsy, like many on persons who had acromegaly or gigantism, invariably found pituitary tumors to be present. This is because the conditions are most often caused by a benign but productive tumor in the gland making excessive levels of growth hormone, causing many of the changes displayed in Ghirlenzoni's skeleton. . On the right is Andre the Giant, the famous #prowrestler. It is not difficult to imagine that the skeletal changes that Ghirlenzoni had--as many with these conditions do--may have been found in Andre as well. Neither Ghirlenzoni nor Andre the Giant received treatment for their conditions, but, since he was born in a time before the true cause was known, the then famous Italian actor would not have had a chance to correct it. . . "When i was in my Mother's Abdomen i was affected by Lunar eclipse" thats what she was told by her mother. This condition is called Macrodystrophia lipomatosa which is a rare congenital condition, characterized by local gigantism of digits hands and feet called macrodactyly or megalodactyly. This disease is usually unilateral and does not require treatment untill or unless there is any functional compromise or cosmetical concern. The main surgical principle in treating this condition is to improve the cosmetic appearance, and to preserve the neurological function as far as possible. Impact of evolutionary concept of Dwarfism and Gigantism on employees’ skills and ability in the office. ‘’Dwarfism’’ and ‘’Gigantism’’ occur in nature. When large animals, such as elephants, tigers, lions, start living on small and isolated islands, their size becomes smaller through generations. Their bodies, brains, all gradually shrink. Because the amount of food needed to maintain a large body is not available on small islands or areas. Consequently, in the urge to survive, from generation to generation, animals shrink in size to survive longer on less food and thus larger animals become smaller which is called dwarfism. On the other hand, small animals, such as mice, frog, lizards, grow up bigger in size in that environment for generations. Because on small islands food is scarce for large animals, but food for small animals is plentiful. There is less fear of predators. As a result, small animals can take the necessary food without fear. In this, from generation to generation, small animals become big animals. For example, in Madagascar, Sardinia, and Mauritius, rats, lizards, komodos, these animals are monstrous, but elephants, goats, hippopotamus, they are dwarf. In any of these areas, large animals become small due to lack of food, this is dwarfism; And in the abundance of logistics, small animals become large, this is gigantism. I strongly think that this wonderful concept of evolutionary biology has an equal impact on employees’ skills and ability considering the office environment. If you look closely, you will see that gigantism and dwarfism are constantly occurring in an office like the animal kingdom.
