Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit. Urquhart Castle overlooks Loch Ness from the rocky promontory that it dominates and upon which some famous names have set foot. St Columba may have visited around AD 580. Adomnan, his biographer, tells of the saintโs encounter with a monster in the loch. Urquhart has a lively history. It was one of the great castles taken by the English when Edward I invaded in 1296. The Lords of the Isles then seized the castle repeatedly in the later Middle Ages, in an effort to expand their territory into the north-east. In the 1500s, Clan Grant was given the castle and charged with its repair and with bringing it back into use. Urquhart Castle was garrisoned for the last time in 1689, following the exile of the Catholic King James VII, and his replacement by the Protestant monarchs William II and Mary II. In 1692, the towering gatehouse was deliberately blown up so that the castle could never again be a military stronghold. Another excellent day walking the #greatglenway Skipping the first few miles meant I could finish the day - despite that, Iโve still walked 12 miles today. Great scenery, more flowers, and my first cuckoo of the year. Unexpected delicious coffee and cake @lochnessclayworks in their sweet garden, plus a lovely glazed jug for @malcolmdodds to take home with him. My first ever tick. Fortunately @malcolmdodds is still the man who has a tool for everything, and he was able to safely remove it all (I hope! ๐ค๐ผ) Last day of the walk tomorrow - canโt believe how fast itโs flown by. Schotland dag 3 Highlands ๐ฅฐ & Glasgow Derby ๐ฅด Gisteren nog oostwaarts, waar de bergen in de verte al te zien waren, vandaag noordelijk en binnen een half uur al tussen de Glens & Lochs, fantastisch! Je ziet Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Glencoe en thee sisters. Iets teveel gereden naar mijn mening, met te korte stops, anderzijds is het ook goed merkbaar dat je hoofd al die ooohs en aaahs op een gegeven moment niet meer goed registreert dus ook al. Waren we langer gestopt, het had niet veel extra's denk ik. Het was prachtig het eindelijk eens echt te zien en onderweg te horen over het ontstaan en de geschiedenis van dit krachtige land. Na 12 uur op pad geweest te zijn kwam ik terug in Glasgow, en ik wist wel dat celtic tegen de rangers speelde. Met de lunch al. Inmiddels waren de fans in hele andere sferen en ik vond het niet zo prettig om daardoor naar het hotel te lopen. รberhaupt ervaar ik dat in Glasgow, het voelt alsof er elk moment iets staat te ontploffen. Er is veel lawaai en geschreeuw, spiedende mannen en schaarsgeklede dames die het allemaal met elkaar in het vet lijken te hebben. In mijn afritsbroek en wandelschoen viel ik wel op. Of dat leek zo in mijn hoofd, in elk geval, op dat moment was het idee van solo wat minder leuk. Eenmaal veilig in het hotel, gauw de kaartjes naar Inverness geboekt. Vandaag daar naar toe met de trein. Van een miljoen inwoners naar 50.000, dat lijkt me wel wat. Itโs been a week since myself and @liggles89 travelled up to bonnie Scotland to take on the awesome @ultraxco 110 Scotland and what an incredible weekend we had out on the beautiful trails around Loch Ness! It was our first multi-day event and we had to cover a challenging 60k on the first day, followed by one of the most beautiful 50k routes Iโve ever run on day 2 ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธIt was such a well organised event, brilliant check points, amazing marshals, a very well marked route and an incredible over night campsite!
