🌊 Exciting week behind. Will Carissa go to sea as planned? Frost and snow made it difficult to work. Fortunately, Carissa was at the Lindgren shipyard in a warm hall at the time. Maintenance of the mast was difficult due to snow and frost, but finally the sun came to help and the mast was serviced. Our swan was dropped into the sea last Friday. 🌊 At the pier we tested our new electronics with Robert from B&G Voltak Oy and installed the Lazy bag Sailandgon with Jari. 🌊 There's still plenty to do. There were minor problems with the hydraulics, which is why the sails will be fixed this week. 🌊Carissa's home is now Helsingfors Segelklubb, where we continue to trim the boat. 🌊A wonderful new season is starting. Busy start to the week for ladies 🤩 🌊 On Monday we competed the Fastnet race with Sanna and Julius and yesterday the topic of the day was the electricity systems on board. 🌊 On top of everything, we maintained all 12 of our boat’s through-holes and over 40-year-old floor plates 💪 A maintenance plan was made for the mast for next week but now there is one well deserved day off. Coral bleaching is occurring at an alarming rate, and it’s our ocean’s cry for help and a real indication of the health of our waters today. For the month of November, we've bleached ourselves and teamed up with @coral_org in solidarity for coral reef conservation and in honour of Coral Bleaching Awareness month. Carissa is on her way home❣️ The second last leg of the season started from Copenhagen and we are now sailing north along the coast of Sweden. The strong autumn winds have forced us to consider several alternative routes and to choose the least windy one. Carissa has happily docked to Stavanger and the ladies are on their way home 🤩 After the Shetland Islands, we admired the breathtakingly beautiful landscapes of Norway and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of lovely small villages 😍 The weather varied from bright sun to heavy fog and occasional rains, and the winds at the same time from absolutely zero to nice and fast sailing ⛵️ Our route on this leg was Lerwick - Out Skerries - Bekkjarvik - Espevaer - Rovaer - Skudeneshavn - Bergevik - Lysefjorden - Stavanger, a total of 365 nautical miles. All the places were so nice and interesting that we simply couldn't name a favorite. Although of course Norway's Lysefjorden seemed to collect the most of the "wows". Carissa's adventures continue 🤩 New ladies on board started their adventure on the windy islands of Shetland, where they had time to enjoy the wonderful scenery and some hiking. After a short pit-stop in Skerries we left on Tuesday evening towards Norway. The crossing of the North Sea was great, 195 nautical miles in varying winds ⛵️ We arrived to the Norway Selbjörn on Thursday morning. On the way from Bergen, Norway to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. We asked the crew what was the best thing on this sailing. Among the most memorable were crossing the North Sea, night sailing, tides and landings in new places. The fact that on most of the small islands we were the only boat besides the fishing boats. Pure and authentic nature both on land and at sea. They also remembered the people, the encounters with the locals, the artisan tradition and the Shetland ponies. And how easy and smooth life in small spaces with new people can be. Such was our adventure sailing this time. Bodil Forss's memories from Turku Stockholm sailing Turku to Stockholm on July 27-30, 2023. We intended to leave Turku on Tuesday morning July 27, but due to an issue with the AIS tracking system that is needed for the Gotland runt race, we could not. We started out Tuesday around 6pm and set course eastwards. We did also some measurement tests with the sonde from the Gothenburg University for logging data from the Baltic Sea. We sailed and alternatively motored in the light wind through the night. The summer nights are spectacular and it never gets really dark. We arrived in Rödhamn, Åland Islands, on Wednesday morning. After a brief stop and swim we continued and had a fantastic sail over the Åland Sea in winds of 10 m/s. We arrived in Furusund the same evening. In the morning we set out after Galiana towards Grinda avoiding a thunderstorm passing by. On Thursday morning we continued all the way to Stockholm enjoying the sights and the Gotland Runt arrangements. We are not superwomen. We retired from the race due to strong winds after the round of Almagrundet. In our previous race were didn't finish due to lack of wind and now there was too much wind. There were approximately 200 boats at the start line and according to the current information about 90% have retired from the race. The end result of the race was one broken genaker and disappointment, but also a lot of good memories and skilled sailing. Great sailing in the archipelago with so many gybes in the poring rain with a lot of wins and some losts. "Skillful women survive, where wise women don't even get into". The first race of the season is over, and it didn't go quite like we hoped. We run out of the time as we found many windless areas on the route, so we didn't get to celebrate crossing the finish line this time. It’s good to be a woman sailor today. 2 years ago today I posted about what we wanted to achieve: ”give us an open horizon, clean seas and wind in the sails… our next goal is to race across the Atlantic in autumn 2021, and back to Europe in spring 2022.” We did it, and more - we built an incredible team. There’s still a few maintenance jobs to be done on our boat, things I never thought I could do, but together we seem to get just about anything done. From May onwards the ocean is calling again, and we’re heading out for new adventures on the North Atlantic. Seagrass 🌱👌 Sailors, we know - we mention seagrass a lot. A lot, a lot. Why? Because it's one of the most valuable species of anything on our planet. Absorbing up to 37 times more carbon dioxide than our rainforests, seagrasses help act as the thermostat to the temperature of our planet and the home to thousands and thousands of marine species. Seagrasses help hold our coastlines together with its roots. Seagrasses slow down the velocity of wave action, lowering the effect of erosion on our shorelines. Seagrass meadows are the feeding ground, playground, nursery and breeding ground to an extraordinary number of species within our oceans, which support our entire global food chain. Shall we go on?! Supporting Sailors in combating climate change 🌱 ⛵ We have news!! We are super excited to share that we have teamed up with @getsavvynavvy and @oceanconservationtrust to digitally map sensitive seabeds in boating hotspots around the world 🌎 Our #protectourbeds campaign will help stop stop vital seagrass being destroyed by sharing information on where sensitive seabeds lie and encouraging us sailors to minimise disruption, especially by anchoring. Seagrasses combat climate change by absorbing and storing HUGE amounts of carbon, but are estimated to be the fastest disappearing habitat on the planet mainly due to avoidable human activity. These meadows store 10% of the ocean’s carbon and are key protagonists in the combat of climate change. They can be up to 35 times more efficient at absorbing carbon than rainforests of the same area and are habitat for thousands of species in our waters. So, from today, we are helping to make sure that information on where these sensitive seabeds lie becomes accessible to sailors, boaters and water-users alike, digitally. 💪 To find out more head to the link in our bio! Glögg & Legs night ⛵️ Merry bunch of Ocean Ladies gathered in Lauttasaari (and online) to drink glögg and to cherish the past 16 month long sailing season 2021-22 and to learn about our plans for the next summer. The sailing leg premier revealed that the sailing area next season will be the Nordic countries and additionally Shetland Islands. Warm thank you to everybody who participated in the event and in our ’new swim ladder’ lottery. After 16 months of sailing, it is time for Carissa to get some well-deserved rest and maintenance! In these amazing 350 days at sea, we have sailed almost 13 000 nautical miles in 20 countries, and more than 100 ladies have been part of these adventures ⛵️🤩 This season exceeded all our expectations! Sometimes things and winds got wild, but we managed 💪 And if there wasn’t enough wind and waves, then there were killer whales who wanted to give us extra excitement. But we enjoyed, we managed, and the boat survived this rough and long season! Now we will give her extra maintenance and care, and Carissa is waiting to be lifted at @lindgrenintelakka. While we wash and polis, we will also plan our next adventures 🤩⛵️ We ladies and our dear Carissa will be at the sea again in the spring, sailing and enjoying, and cheering for Cleaner Seas! What a great weekend of sailing with @oceanladies.fi This time our joyful group consisted of seasoned sailors as well as brand-new recruits to the team. The unseasonally warm weather and a nice breeze accompanied us to the island of Onas where we celebrated the end of the season with a sauna, swim and a candlelight dinner.
