Earlier this week I did a talk for the Women's Institute over in Ecclesall! I think it went quite well! The lovely ladies of the WI were very welcoming and listened very attentively to my presentation about edible wildflowers, and they were fascinated by the floral syrups, and fresh flowers I'd brought to make tea out of. It's vetch season! These close relative of garden peas are in flower at the moment making them easy to spot. Here we have common vetch (first photo) and wood vetch (second photo), both of them good edibles. Leaves and flowers can be eaten just like pea shoots and taste similar. ⚠️ Make sure to only eat species that are known to be safe to eat. After lots of persuasion, I’ve finally dug into the calendar to find a spare date for a full day coastal foraging walk! 🙌🏻☺️✨🌊🌿 We’ll spend time by the coast, looking at the wonderful array of wild edibles to be found there, including sand dune plants, salt marsh plants, and seaweeds! Guests will also be treated to a fireside, picnic-style, tasting menu, by the sea. There are only 15 spaces available on this event, so booking early is essential. I will release tickets this Thursday 23rd May at 6pm. The booking link will be sent out via email to our subscribers, first. A few weeks ago on a randomly ‘lucky’ fine day we took out some hard-working volunteers from Erw Dewi, the wonderful community garden situated in the Cathedral Close in St Davids. We really loved being asked to take this friendly group around the lanes and hedgerows near the Cathedral finishing up with biscuits and tea in the garden. This is one of the gardens in St Davids open to the public on June 15th & 16th in aid of Prostate Cymru and Erw Dewi. I think this is one of the prettiest edible wild plants, I bought some last year for the garden (everything growing here has to have a use). Then on the same day quite by chance and great coincidence, I actually found a small clump when I was out walking, I had never seen any before, so it was very exciting. But this year I went in search of some more and found an enormous swathe of it (even more exciting). So - this is pink purslane (Claytonia sibirica), and although it can be cooked like spinach I really love its raw earthiness in salads and I’m looking forward to trying it in pesto. This succulent plant likes damp woody places, but isn’t a native plant. It was introduced to the UK in the 1800s for gardens and has since become naturalised. Pink purslane has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Its leaves and stems are known for their soothing effect on the skin and have been used for cuts and abrasions. The juice was used for eye drops and as an infusion to treat dandruff. Some brief notes on Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) which I found a large patch of today… It has had many other names, but Ale-hoof seems to be the most well known. Ground ivy has hoof-shaped leaves and was used to flavour and clarify beer before hops were used. It is an attractive little plant, with the typical square stem of the dead nettle family and lavender-blue flowers. It has a low creeping habit, favouring grasslands, disturbed ground and woodland edges. Try using the aromatic, bitter leaves to flavour soups or stews. You might have to wait a couple of weeks depending on where you are, or even a couple of months for our friends in the upper parts of Scotland. ⚠️ Make sure not to confuse with Viburnum species which have been in flower for a couple of weeks. The sweet fragrance of elderflower is enough to identify it, but the shape of the leaves, which are almost always in a group of five, makes it distinct. Caper time… we call them Allium pearls or Allium caviar. They are the cool little budbils from the very invasive Wild Leek/Allium paradox. If you intend to forage it yourselves, please make sure you clean your tools, footwears and anything else that has been in contact with the plant, especially if you are planning on foraging wild garlic afterwards. This lemony leaf will be the most delicious thing you forage for this month! 🐑 Have you tried sheep’s sorrell? A deliciously lemony sour leaf full of flavour for a spring salad? Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) has also been called ‘sour ducks’ or ‘vinegar plant’. Ayurveda recognises the sour taste as being made from the elements of earth and fire, so is hot and oily but also light. This stimulates digestion and clears dryness through taste buds on the sides of the tongue. Sour, unripe fruits are commonly used as digestive chutneys in India for this reason. Sorrel can be found virtually anywhere in the UK in open grassland such as meadows, fields, parks, lawns.. we will be looking for it on my summer solstice foraging workshop on 21st June. The leaves are best used fresh, it doesn’t much like heat! Its leaves and flowers are used raw in salads, or can be used to replace lemon or lime in dishes requiring a zing. It also be used as a sweet ingredient for cakes and sorbets. SPEING FORAGING HALF DAY WORKSHOP: EDIBLE WEEDS & FOREST HERBS! During this workshop, I will guide you through gathering wild edibles and identifying medicinal plants in the forests of Strausberg (Brandenburg). We will discuss the importance of following the seasons, being in touch with nature, eating wild herbs and the impact these have on our health. Following this first part of our session, I will lead a workshop on using your hand-picked products for preparing a personalised tonic, these will depend on the plants we find. We will then end the workshop by enjoying the local lake and sharing an afternoon picnic together. Sustainable, meditative, naturally medicinal, and healthy. Gathering plants from their natural habitats gives us another layer of connection with nature. There is something very grounding about collecting, preparing, and using plants that grow naturally in our local forests. Like meditation, gathering allows you to be centred and in the moment.
