Toshiaki dominava o estilo Ko-jigen-ryū, cuja técnica consiste em segurar a espada verticalmente acima do ombro direito. O ataque é feito então, correndo para a frente de seu oponente e em seguida cortando-o diagonalmente do pescoço pra baixo. Suas atividades foram em grande parte centradas em Kyoto até meados da década de 1860. Durante a guerra de Boshin, Kirino foi o comandante do novo Exército Imperial. I’m extremely grateful for that. Somebody asked me why I thought peacock feathers were a good choice for this Jinbaori. Those feathers represent royalty, elegance and power which is is what I wanted to convey through his costumes. I thought those feathers being so precious were appropriate for that battle scene…Toranaga knew he won before even one drop of blood was spilled. Therefore the Jinbaori didn’t need to be functional or protective. It gave the message of victory before anything started. It was also a way to keep showing his power and wealth even at such a crucial moment. This armor was made out of leather in order to make it as light a possible. It also breaks down beautifully giving the armor a light patina and a bit more depth. Initially, we couldn’t find the leather in the right color so we ended up painting white leather in brown in order to get the right tone. Thank you to my incredible assistant Designer @kamikazedescendant for being my right hand designing all the armors in a very tight 6 week period. Thank you to another one of my wonderful assistants @loveforeverkristen for helping me coordinate all the details for the Jinbaori. Thank you to @allissound333 and her incredible team for making Toranaga’s uniform and Jinbaori. Le château de Cardiff : une histoire qui remonte à l’ère romaine, une forteresse normande... jusqu’à des remodelages à l’époque victorienne. Quand on a fait le tour des extérieurs, du chemin de ronde, du donjon en haut de sa butte et qu’on a vu le trébuchet, on se lance dans la visite de la résidence. Là, on peut témoigner de la folie que l’architecte Burges (digne de Viollet-le-Duc) a conçue pour le comte de Bute passionné d’ère médiévale... au XIXème. Heureusement que le commanditaire avait des poches sans fond, de quoi laisser libre cours à son imagination fantaisiste. Alors je suis ravie d’avoir ajouté au billet de base deux visites guidées, l’une qui m’a notamment donné accès à la nursery (avec les contes illustrés sur les murs) ou à la chambre du comte et l’autre qui m’a fait gravir la tour de l’horloge à travers les exubérants fumoirs d’hiver et d’été. Et ce n’est encore pas fini !! Les murailles ont servi d’abri pendant WW2 et on peut enfin visiter un musée de l’armée. Episode 10: Toranaga’s peacock Jinbaori for the battle of Sekigahara. As I mentioned previously, this jinbaori started being conceptualized as I was doing research for a Dofuku for Blackthorne. I found online a picture of a peacock Dofuku which I fell in love with immediately. I didn’t think it was appropriate for Blackthorne but I thought it would make a beautiful Jinbaori for young Toranaga. Once that piece was created and we shot the flashback, I went to talk to @hiroyukisanadapr and asked him if we could do the same for Toranaga’s costume for the battle of Sekigahara. He thought it was a brilliant idea. We both felt it would connect young Toranaga’s failure to Toranaga’s success during the battle. Our showrunner Justin Marks also liked the idea. We all thought it was the perfect way to finish the show… Full circle for an extraordinary character. Although his emotional arc is more linear than Mariko’s journey, I felt that his evolution as a character was symbolized by this Jinbaori… Endless hours of work went into building this piece made my the incredibly talented and very patient @allissound333 First, hundreds of feathers of different sizes needed to be found. Then, they were all classified by color and size. Once the foundation of the Jinbaori was created, Allison did her magic and applied each one of them from the smaller ones at the top to the big ones at the bottom. I wanted more brown closer to the neck as to not introduce another color…and so we kept the green ones at the bottom. Seeing pieces like this one being created with such passion and dedication is why I do this job…It was pure magic! Fuji is one of my favorite characters on @shogunfx and @moekappa823 one of the best actors I’ve worked with. Her presence on screen is always impactful and her charisma and depth is undeniable. Fuji is fascinating on “Shōgun”… Moeka is a beautiful poem in real life… Fuji means Wisteria in Japanese… I thought it was the perfect concept to explore for this character. Illustrated is a rather impromptu photo of a vivid and animated nebula temmoku chawan by Kimura Moriyasu. The bowl, in transit as it were was sitting on the the chest when the sun very graciously decided to rake accross the chawan highlighting the running glaze, showing off the rich amber lip and multi-colored range of rivulets making their way down the bowl paying homage to heat and gravity. Thrown out of a crepe texturered buff clay, the form is simple, based on an archetype originated across the sea with a slight uneven wavering to the lip and a deep, almost profound well ending in a perfect mikomi. As straightforward as is the form, the surface is innovative and alive as the layers were first built up and then melted, comingled and ran down the bowl in short, controllable burst through what ends up looking like distinct bands of color surrounding the chawan. Mariko and her white costumes… In honor of the extraordinary performance of @annasawai on @shogunfx here is how Mariko started taking shape for both of us while we were prepping this show: Mariko’s costumes reflect her emotional arc from feeling lifeless, ashamed and dishonored in the beginning to having the courage to empower herself and speak her truth. The patterns and colors evolve as she meets Blackthorne and finds her path and purpose. At first, her costumes are monochromatic with patterns of “snow covering the grass”and hand painted branches without leaves but then some embroidered camelias discreetly appear on her Uchikakes. Slowly the wintery minimalist symbols are replaced by bolder patterns and colors as those camelias start blooming. Towards the end, hand painted cranes seem to be taking off from her Uchikake as she speaks her truth. The creative driving force behind Mariko’s costumes is definitely based on her emotional and psychological journey. Of all characters she’s the only one who needed to be conceptualized with that in mind. Incorporating this very poetic concept into her looks helped me create a character that I knew the audience would connect with. Reusing towards the end some of her white costumes from the first episodes was not only symbolic of her being aware that death was around the corner but also to show that empowerment is not linear. This concept is in alignement with the beautiful poems she comes up in episode 9. It also works with what she says about life and death being the same…which is reflected in her wearing white during her wedding but also for the seppuku scene. Episode 9: Flashback Mariko 14 yrs ago… All the flashbacks were incredible and this one was one of my favorites. I felt it was a very poetic and ethereal scene in which Mariko, pregnant, needed to look vulnerable and fragile. This was her first outfit incorporating the concept of camélias in her storyline. It was a complicated costume to put together as she needed to remove layer after layer, running through the snow… Thank you to cutter/ fitter Cathy Seiler and her team for putting this look together.
