Le château de Cardiff : une histoire qui remonte à l’ère romaine, une forteresse normande... jusqu’à des remodelages à l’époque victorienne. Quand on a fait le tour des extérieurs, du chemin de ronde, du donjon en haut de sa butte et qu’on a vu le trébuchet, on se lance dans la visite de la résidence. Là, on peut témoigner de la folie que l’architecte Burges (digne de Viollet-le-Duc) a conçue pour le comte de Bute passionné d’ère médiévale... au XIXème. Heureusement que le commanditaire avait des poches sans fond, de quoi laisser libre cours à son imagination fantaisiste. Alors je suis ravie d’avoir ajouté au billet de base deux visites guidées, l’une qui m’a notamment donné accès à la nursery (avec les contes illustrés sur les murs) ou à la chambre du comte et l’autre qui m’a fait gravir la tour de l’horloge à travers les exubérants fumoirs d’hiver et d’été. Et ce n’est encore pas fini !! Les murailles ont servi d’abri pendant WW2 et on peut enfin visiter un musée de l’armée. Porto 🍷 . . . 1️⃣2️⃣ Livraria Lello, 1906. La librairie fut ouverte en 1869 par Ernesto Chardron (1840-1885), puis rachetée en 1894 par José Pinto de Sousa Lello. Elle fut inaugurée en 1906 avec un tout nouveau style art nouveau. En 1993, lors des premiers travaux de restauration et suite à une erreur de coloris, les marches de l’escalier autrefois marrons furent repeintes en rouge. Le résultat, très apprécié, fut laissé tel quel. Houses No: 1002 The Arab Room at Cardiff Castle Location: Cardiff, Wales, UK Built: 1880s Architect: William Burges The fantasy moorish design of the Arab Room, reminiscent of pre-Raphaelite visions of harem rooms, was designed in the 1880s by architect and medieval revivalist William Burges for the castle’s Victorian-era owner, John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute. The architect was inspired by his extensive travels as well as the works of French Orientalist Emile Prisse d’Avennes, who published a popular collection of Arab designs in 1877. Described as “arguably the apogee of Burges’s work as an interior designer,” the Arab Room is stunning even amongst the grand halls, gardens and wood-paneled library Burges created at Cardiff Castle. In order to accommodate the Arab Room’s elaborate high-vaulted ceiling, the upper two floors were removed. The ornate golden ceiling is not simply gold paint but is in fact pure gold-leaf painstakingly applied by hand. While the use of gold leaf is common-place throughout the opulent property, it is estimated that the gold in the Arab Room alone amounts to a whopping £8 million. The residence and garden grounds of the castle were extensively overhauled under that patronage of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who allowed Burges a perfect playground to exercise his passion for Gothic and medieval design, mingled with a romantic Victorian sensibility. The short film that screens at the entrance to the Holland Park mansion of Lord Frederic Leighton, the nineteenth-century painter, tells us (primly) that he never married but was deeply devoted to his female “model and muse,” to whom he was “father, mentor, and MAYBE lover.” Maybe. A quick look at the details of Lord Leighton’s library, interior design experiments, and art oeuvre suggests that the man who stockpiled copies of The Lives of the Queens of England (image 1), designed the sumptuously flamboyant Arab Room (image 2), and — for heaven’s sake — titled his iconic masterpiece Flaming June (image 3) was just maybe otherwise inclined. This week's corner is in the Arab Room at Cardiff Castle and the heraldry is Scottish In this room is a display of eight shields on the corbels, and a heraldic mosaic on the fireplace. The most familiar arms are those of Stuart of Bute, Windsor, Crichton and Hastings. You will also find Crawford of Auchinames, Rawson, Campbell of Loudoun and lastly here Macleod of Raasay. The blazon of which would be: " Or, a burning mountain proper, in dexter and sinister chief points two crosses party fitchée Gules". The fantasy Moorish Design of the Arab Room was designed in the 1880s by architect William Burges for the castle’s Victorian-era owner, John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute. Leighton House Museum is a hidden treasure in Holland Park and one I was delighted to visit last week. Designed and built by the famous English painter Frederic Leighton it is definitely not what you would expect a London town house to look like. In fact I felt like I had been whisked back to a riad in Marrakesh! The house was one of several in the area built for prolific artists but this is the only one open to the public. As well as the beautiful Arab Room, you will see Leightons studio, gallery,bedroom and gardens. The Stock Exchange Palace (Palácio da Bolsa) is a historical building in Porto, Portugal. The palace was built in the 19th century by the city's Commercial Association in Neoclassical style. It is located in the Infante D. Henrique Square in the historical centre of Porto and is a designated World Heritage site by UNESCO. The highlight of the Palace is however, the Arab Room, built between 1862 and 1880 by Gonçalves e Sousa. The Arab Room at Leighton House. I didn’t know which bits to look at first! So much decoration. Beautiful tiles on the walls and the floors, detailed window and floors grilles. A gold dome. This was more expensive to build than the entire house and on completion in 1882 caused a sensation in London. Inspired by the #architecture #interiors and #courtyards #leighton had seen on his travels to #northafrica and the #middleeast William De Morgan and The Arab Hall commission Leighton probably knew William De Morgan through his work with Morris & Co. in the 1860s and would have been aware that the artist had set up a successful art pottery in nearby Chelsea in 1872. By the time Leighton decided to build the Arab Hall extension to his Holland Park home, De Morgan was the obvious choice to install the tiles and was also commissioned to make replacements for broken pieces, as well as creating additional turquoise tiles for the entrance hall and Narcissus hall to complete the scheme. William De Morgan’s ceramics reflect the wide range of sources he drew inspiration from. The Arab Room (Gabinete Árabe), Room no. 18, at Aranjuez was decorated in 1848 to 1850 by Rafael Contreras y Muñoz (1826-90) and was used as a smoking room. Rafael Contreras had been responsible for the restoration of Alhambra in Granada and his inspiration for this interior was the finest room there, The Hall of the Two Sisters, dating from the 16th century. The room furnished with two large divans upholstered in red silk damask, and a Sèvres guéridon painted with scenes of Nasrid history painted by Louis Robert (1810-82) and Antoine Béranger (1785-1867). This unique table was a gift from the French King Louis Philippe to Maria Cristina, Queen Regent of Spain 1833-40..
