Okay, Encyclopaedia of Faeries was delightful. It follows Emily Wilde, a curmudgeonly Cambridge professor in an alternate world Victorian era. Wilde is a genius scholar and the foremost expert in the study of faeries. What she is not is someone good at dealing with people. On a field assignment in Iceland, she’s forced to collaborate with her academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to immediately charm the townsfolk. He gets in the middle of Emily’s research, teases her, and generally manages to confound and frustrate her. As Wilde continues her research, new questions pop up about Wendall and the pair are forced to work together. I was surprised by how unexpectedly fun and charming this was. I loved the two lead characters and their dynamic, and genuinely wanted more from them (luckily, a sequel just came out!).
