Mobility aids are freedom! Made some happier art including my forearm crutches after the angst in the last post. I've been using forearm crutches for a few months now due to chronic pain that severely affects my legs, and they've been so useful. Not only are my daily pain levels lower than they used to be, but because of that, I'm able to be more active. I do occasionally have issues with pain in other joints that can be exacerbated by the crutches, but those pains are milder and less common than my leg pains so I think it's worth it. I just take it easy on days with bad flare ups :) If you think you could benefit from using a mobility aid, I definitely recommend trying them out if possible! I was lucky enough to be able to borrow some crutches to try before spending any money on some for myself. There are medical supply lockers here and there, so I definitely recommend looking to see if those are anywhere nearby if you are considering a mobility aid. Bit of a more personal piece, but here's my beloved Sweetpea. For context, I suffer from chronic pain that is currently undiagnosed, but my doctor's running theory is a connective tissue disorder. This results in polyarthralgia (pain in multiple joints) as well as joint hyperextension and subluxations. I have thankfully never dislocated any of my joints, but I think that's been mostly luck. It's really rough being a young person with chronic pain, I've had it since high school, but it's only gotten worse over the years. On bad days, it really does feel like my body is falling apart. I'm only 25 now, but I've never had a "real job" because I couldn't stand for even a 4 hour part-time shift. This is also part of the reason my work shared here can be sporadic and long-winded. However, I am also a full-time college student, so part of it is also that. I've finally started using the correct mobility aids this year (mostly forearm crutches and a rollator) after several years of using a cane when it wasn't right for me. I've also just applied for health care assistance, which means hopefully, in the near future, I might actually know for sure what's wrong with me and how I might be able to cope better. It's gotten to the point that I'm considering applying for disability, though I know from several people close to me who have had to do that in the past that it's not exactly a quick and easy process. Sorry for the long, rambling post, but I think disability should he talked about more in the fandom. For those of you who don't know, I am physically disabled and walk with a walker. I can stand up straight for a few seconds, but that's about it. My kids are so special B'H. Not only do they help me tremendously, they carry my walker up and down the stairs when I need to take the train. When other children point and laugh at me, they simply tell them that their mother is disabled without blinking an eye. Today is Rare Disease Day! There are more than 6000 rare diseases in the world and over 300 million people worldwide who have a rare disease! Myasthenia Gravis is only one of them. I was asked today why I say "Happy" rare disease day and my answer was this: I can't change the fact that I have multiple disabilities, I can't get rid of them, remission in MG is suuuuper rare. Today is a chance to celebrate and embrace that part of my life. A chance to advocate and bring awareness to the rare disease I have and to celebrate with my community of other MGers and disabled friends. It's a nice validation to a disease that is so rarely mentioned or known of. In 2022, I was off Soliris infusion due to Priority Health being assholes. I ended up in the hospital for a few days in December 2022. I even quit my job to get different insurance. My current employer switched to Priority Health insurance October 2023. I ended up in the hospital again in December 2023. There are so many mixed messages out there that makes it seem as if there are certain allowances or windows for disability inclusion. Though this is not true inclusion . Successful Ultomiris infusion yesterday. Now to wait 8 weeks until one. I'm nervous, my body usually can't handle intermittent Infusions. My MG symptoms always get worse the longer I have to wait. In a couple of weeks I'll be eligible to apply for intermittent FMLA at work,. I'm debating applying for it because my managers, to my knowledge, don't know that I'm disabled. I couldn't figure out why I've been so much more exhausted (than my normal) lately and then I realized: I've been off my regular infusions for over a month now. While I have (thankfully) been receiving at least some type of infusion, the medication is no where near as effective as Soliris was and my days are getting harder and harder to push through. Heute habe ich meinen Mann Miki mehrmals gefragt: Ist es gut? Bist du sicher, dass es eine gute Leistung ist? Also habe ich heute überprüft, wie viele Schritte ich mit der Prothese gemacht habe, ich glaube, ich war am meisten von dem Ergebnis überrascht. Ich habe sie in etwa einem Monat verdoppelt 🦿💪, obwohl ich eine Operation hatte und krank war und nicht aufstehen konnte. Als ich mir die Zahlen ansah, fiel mir ein, dass ich letztes Jahr um diese Zeit nur davon träumte, was jetzt Realität ist.
