May is #AAPIHeritage Month! “The AAPI umbrella term includes cultures from the entire Asian continent—including East, Southeast and South Asia—and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. AAPI people are a diverse and growing population that make up about 7 percent of the total U.S. population.” During this month, we must recognize and celebrate the contributions of the AAPI community and fight anti-Asian hate and racism on all levels. May is only a starting point for these actions to take place all months of the year. #AAPI #AsianAmerican #PacificIslander #May #AccessMatters

#PeriodFriendlyHawai’i ❤️ The Pad Project stands as the first believer in changemakers, partnering with startup non-profit organizations and youth activists through our Leap of Faith program, to uplift locally-led initiatives that expand menstrual product accessibility and product choice. One of our amazing Leap of Faith partners, Kyrstine Cabrera, is based in Honolulu, Hawai’i where she oversees the distribution of menstrual care products among her university’s student population. With support from The Pad Project, Krystine distributed 2,376 menstrual products to 213 students who noted their gratitude for product assistance, highlighting how inflation, the rising cost of living, and lack of accessible transportation methods limit students from gaining access to the menstrual products they need. Many noted how expensive pads are in Hawai’i for students living off of stipends and tight budgets, and were grateful this grant has allowed them to utilize their limited resources to fulfill other needs. We can't change the world at once, but together we can make it move a little faster! I’d been avoiding TK Maxx as their platform lift was rickety and the door problematic. I needed to visit yesterday so decided I’d work out what I needed to do once there. To my delight they have replaced the old lift with a new one. It’s great. Well done TK Maxx, so much better when someone recognises it is important and just sorts it. What is an access statement? Access statements explain to the public an organization or individual’s intentional commitment to nondiscrimination in their programming, services, activities, and communications. These statements allow the public to request accommodations and be notified of their equal opportunity. In terms of the UW community, the university holds a commitment to nondiscrimination by ensuring access to all programs, services, and activities. As such the University will provide notice of equal opportunity and reasonable accommodations on all relevant publications, course and program information, applications, and advertisements of University programs, services, and activities. We hope this guide will serve as another source for members of the UW student, faculty and staff community besides the ADA “Access Statements” webpage to find an access statement right for you! This is how many disabled people around the world live, and Global Accessibility Awareness Day's purpose is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access and inclusion, and the more than One Billion people with disabilities. Access2Arts can assist you in making your digital communications more accessible and inclusive, allowing you to also reach an even larger audience. This is what accessible bird outings look like. 💙 The Biggest Week in American Birding is a ten-day long bird festival held in early May in northwest Ohio to coincide with masses of migrating warblers. We had a wonderful time there co-leading seven accessible field trips, including outings: - On accessible trails, - BYOB (Bring Your Own Bench; a stationary field trip), - In indoor bird blinds, out of the rain and with plenty of chairs, and - All were co-led by multiple birders with disabilities! 🙌🏼 👉🏼 Don’t forget: spouses, other family members, and friends of birders with disabilities benefit from accessible field trips, because these options allow them to go birding together. 💙 Thank you @biggestweek for working with us to offer so many accessible options! We can’t wait for next year! 🙌🏼 Photos by @badgerlandbirding and @the.ot.birder [Image description in comments.] #DisabledBirders #accessible #AccessibleBirding #StationaryBirding #BirdWalk #BirdBlind #inclusion #AccessMatters #BiggestWeekInAmericanBirding #birding #BirdingDaily #disability #DisabilityInclusion

Big shout out to everyone who attended our first Massachusetts Disability Resource Social event. We were so busy chatting that not many photos were taken. Thank you to all of our partners and friends who attended to share the resources you provide to this amazing community, we wouldn't be here without you! Thank you to our incredible host @bionicskins for allowing us near all of your super high-tech equipment for the evening. *No CBCT scanners or 3d printers were harmed in the process.* 🦾😬 This particular event was geared around #AmputeeAwareness for #LimbDifferenceAwarenessMonth but we covered many topics for all disabilities. And of course, thank you to our new guests who joined us for the evening, we hope to see you at the next one! To our members in other cities, if you would like us to bring a similar event to your state, please reach out by visiting our website at bemoreadaptive.org and filling out a contact form with the info you'd like to learn about. #BeMoreAdaptive #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityRights #DisabilityPride #Disability #DisabilityAdvocate #AccessForAll #Accessibility #AccessMatters #DisabilityResources #AdaptiveSports #Massachusetts #GlobalDisabilityResourceDatabase

'Do you want us here or not' – Finnegan Shannon. @finneganshann0n @finneganshann0n @finneganshann0n Finnegan Shannon challenges ableist norms through humour, honesty, and frustration. They struggle with walking and standing, so they're always on the lookout for places to sit and rest. After a painful and tiring museum visit in 2017, where they couldn't find enough seating, Finnegan decided to create artworks that double as benches to encourage more seating in exhibition spaces. Finnegan writes their thoughts on the benches for people to sit on and think about their experiences. Their pieces feature text like "This exhibition is making me stand too long. Sit if you feel the same" or "I'd rather be sitting. Sit if you agree." This text expresses their frustration and humorously highlights the need for rest. One of these benches was made specifically for the Yucky exhibition in collaboration with Sam Peterson. See 'Do you want us here or not' in 'Yucky' : 17 Feb – 4 May 2024 @finneganshann0n @finneganshann0n @finneganshann0n – Images: Finnegan Shannon, 'Do you want us here or not' (2023), installation view, Adelaide Contemporary Experimental. HOW DOES UNIVERSAL DESIGN HELP PEOPLE AGE IN PLACE IN THEIR OWN HOME? At the beginning of the 21st century, those aged 65 or over made up five per cent of the population. Across the globe the number of those aged over 60 will nearly triple by 2050, rising to 2.4 billion, up from 894 million in 2010. Universal Design is the principle of designing spaces for maxi-mum usability for people living with disabilities, of varying size or limited mobility. There are no specific codes for Universal Design. There are suggestions. Universal design is not law, it is a way of viewing how things work in our world. These design principles compensate for a reduced range of motion, reduced sight, reduced sound and reduced strength. Many universal design inventions were originally developed for military use. Spring seems to finally be arriving in the UK, with beautiful flowers popping up and (rare) days of sunshine. We've had awful wet weather recently and our back garden has flooded so it has made things difficult, particularly from an accessibility standpoint as mud isn't kind on wheelchair wheels. 🤣 - Image ID 🆔 - Georgina is a white brunette female who is seated in a manual wheelchair.
