I laid down Winsor & Newton Drawing i is down on the page first, allowed it to dry an entire day, and then began drawing with fountain pen on top. It’s fascinating that the ink of the pen still bled as if the page was wet. I don’t know if this is a property of the Winsor Newton ink, or of the Noodlers xfeather ink in my pen. Have you ever been hiking through desert brush only to startle at the sudden *crack* and *whoosh* of a long-eared, gray-furred missile tearing out of its hiding place to escape your approach? You just had an close encounter with a black-tailed jackrabbit: also known as American desert hare or Lepus californicus (if you want to be precise). Jackrabbits are not true rabbits: as part of the hare family they demonstrate different adaptations to their surroundings than their slower and more fluffy counterparts. When startled, jackrabbits can run up to 30 mph and can leap 20 feet in a single bound! They're constantly running for their lives from the numerous predators that would make a meal of them, including coyotes, owls, snakes, eagles, mountain lions, and foxes. Jackrabbits can reproduce like...well, rabbits. Females can have as many as six litters in a year, and each litter may have anywhere from 1-8 "leverets" or baby jackrabbits. After just a couple weeks, the young can forage for themselves and they're entirely independent after a month. Given our recent celebration of the resurrection of Christ and the seasonal abundance of Cadbury Crème Eggs — in equal measure, I must say — I thought it apt to share this story. During one of my earliest visits to Mexico, we were camping amongst the typical, but terrifically exotic to me, vegetation of the Sonoran Desert. A pink dusk was falling, silhouetting the arching arms of the giant cacti. I meandered out of camp, picking my way cautiously between the prickles. I had not gone far when I was surprised by a Black-tailed JackRabbit, also known as the American Desert Hare, an animal of whose existence I had been blissfully unaware. For those unprepared for them, these apparently common creatures appear enormous, especially in the low light. At around 60 cm in length, they’re one of North America’s largest hares. Its ears were huge, and glowed in the evening light, exaggerating their size. Briefly, every rabbit that I had attempted to annihilate on my farm flashed before my mind, each with gnashing teeth and glowing eyes; I quietly retreated to our camp. The desert hare is small, but has exceptionally large ears. Their colour varies from light brown to pale grey, with white undersides. The large ears assist cooling by dissipating body heat through many superficial blood vessels. Tufts of soft hair grow between the pads on its feet and help him to move on soft sand. The eyes are large and golden, and hares have excellent vision. Desert hares are widely distributed in most habitats with some vegetation or scrub, including gravel and sandy plains. They are generally active at night, and spend the day motionless in shallows scrapes under bushes. They are rarely seen in the open, unless flushed. They feed on shrubs and grasses and are independent of water, obtaining moisture from their food. When flushed, they run at high speed following a zigzag course and can turn abruptly at speed. They are normally solitary except during breeding. Females can produce young all year round with a peak in the winter season. The litter size is usually between one and three. Gestation is 42 days and young hares, known as leverets, are born fully furred with their eyes open and able to walk after one day of birth. Desert hares are widespread, especially on the coast and sand plains and dunes. They are subject to overhunting. Length: 33-52 cm, Tail length: 3-8 cm, Weight: 0.8-1.2 kg #deserthare
