The California ebony tarantula is found in grassy areas from the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego. It is a popular pet spider throughout the United States as it is very docile and poses no threat to humans. In the rare cases in which a bite occurs, it will not have any long-term effect. Due to the spider’s large fangs, the bite itself can be painful. However, the amount and intensity of the venom of the California ebony tarantula is not enough to cause any physical damage or discomfort to humans. Today’s #FunFactFriday (even though I flaked and it's technically past midnight and ergo Saturday now) about a fascinating woodland flower, Jack-in-the-Pulpit! - The common name Jack-in-the-Pulpit comes from its very interesting shape. “Jack” is the central spadix, a spike of very tiny flowers. The “pulpit” is the pouch-shaped part called a spathe, a large sheathing bract that encloses the flower cluster and includes an overhanging hood. - The spathe-and-spadix arrangement is typical of the Arum family. Historically, botanists listed three different species of Jack-in-the-Pulpit, though today some consider them all considered a single species, Arisaema triphyllum. - Other common names for this plant include bog onion and wild turnip. These are in reference to the plant’s corm, or a portion of the plant stem that stores carbohydrates and nutrients, which is edible when properly prepared. Many indigenous American cultures used it for both food and medicine. - Jack-in-the-Pulpit thrives in rich, moist woodland areas. It can be mistaken for poison ivy to the untrained eye because of its “leaves of three.” However, Jack-in-the-Pulpit leaves are larger and broader than poison ivy, and the center leaflet lacks a noticeable stem. Of course, if flowers are present, that’s the best clue! - Most young plants produce male flowers; as plants mature, they produce more female flowers. This is why the plant is referred to as a sequential hermaphrodite. - Fungus gnats are the primary pollinators, though it’s not exactly a mutually beneficial arrangement. Gnats are tricked (by smell) into thinking that the flowers are fungus. When they visit a male flower, they are temporarily trapped (and get dusted with pollen), but can escape via a hole in the spathe. Once they visit a female flower, however, they get trapped for good, and while they pollinate the female flowers in their attempts to escape, they inevitably die. - Pollinated female flowers produce bright, red berries in late summer and early fall. These berries are favored by many birds.

Did you know that beneath these Tomorrowland murals in Disneyland Park lie original Mary Blair mosaics? For those of you who don’t know, Mary Blair was a brilliant artist who brought beautiful, vibrant color to some of Disney’s most beloved animated films and theme parks. For instance, Blair created the Contemporary’s Grand Canyon Concourse mural, but she also crafted two amazing murals for Disneyland’s Tomorrowland in the 1960s. ✨ . Collectively, she named the murals “The Spirit of Creative Energies of Children”; one depicted children across the world connecting via advanced communication technologies while the other showcased a world powered by emerging clean energy sources. ☀️ . Unfortunately, during one of Tomorrowland’s transformations, Disney decided to cover Blair’s masterpieces. Today, what were once beautiful, handcrafted mosaics are now relatively dull, generic panels decorated with spaceships and planets. Mary Blair’s murals, however, were never removed. Imagineers simply covered the murals. Although one of the originals was damaged almost beyond repair, the “North Mural,” which you can see on the third slide, is for the most part intact. It simply lies dormant beneath spaceships and stars (the paneling in the first slide). 🚀 . It saddens me that Disney decided to cover these two beautiful mosaics, but it is fun to think at least parts of them still remain. I hope one day Disney unveils them once again not only because they are magnificent and commemorate one of the most important artists in Disney history, but because the murals depict hope for a harmonious future in which humanity may live joyfully with the land and with one another. Such a future may seem impossible today, which is why we need the optimism with which Mary Blair imbued these mosaics. #Funfactfriday. This weekend is Mother's Day! Motherhood takes many forms - and may not always be ‘picture-perfect’. I like to take my lead from the Australian Koala. This adorable marsupial gives us examples of some of the best - and possibly worst - examples of motherhood. Renowned for their maternal caring, the mother Koala will carry their young, first in their pouch, and then on their back, sometimes until their child is almost half their own weight! But did you know that this same doting Koala mum will feed her kids poop for dinner? ( Remember that when you feel bad for giving yours fast food!). And although science supports this curious behavior (the eating of dung helps their babies acquire the gut microbiome necessary to digest the toxic eucalyptus leaf) - it should also make us feel a little bit better about what gets on our children’s plate. As Mother’s Day nears this coming Sunday, we wanted to recognize a very special mother who helped kickstart our store: Mary Stengel. Mary was a very smart and successful businesswoman and supported Isabel (her daughter) and Rudy (Isabel’s soon-to-be husband) when they decided to open a candy store in 1921. Mary included the original #muths building at 526 East Market and the six original glass display cases in Isabel’s dowry, allowing the young couple to open the doors to Muth’s Candies. Both of Mary’s daughters, Belle and Hilde, devoted their lives to Muth’s and were owners together during the 1950s-1980s.
