The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. This incredibly rare and fired large caliber machine gun bullet was recovered on the D-Day Omaha Beach landing sectors from Vierville sur-Mer to Port-en-Bessin which includes the landing zones of CHARLIE, DOG GREEN, DOG WHITE, DOG RED, EASY GREEN, EASY RED, FOX GREEN, & FOX RED. This was uncovered during a professional excavation of Omaha Beach in Normandy during the 50th Invasion Anniversary in 1994. On the morning of June 6, 1944, two U.S. infantry divisions, the 1st and the 29th, landed at Omaha Beach, the second to the west of the five landing beaches of D-Day. Opposing the landings was the German 352nd Infantry Division. Of its 12,020 men, 6,800 were experienced combat troops, detailed to defend a 53-kilometer (33 mi) front. The German strategy was based on defeating any seaborne assault at the water line, and the defenses were mainly deployed in strong points along the coast. Casualties on Omaha Beach were the worst of any of the invasion beaches on D-Day, with 2,400 casualties suffered by U.S. forces. And that includes wounded and killed as well as missing. There is no concrete number for the German forces that were killed at Omaha Beach. Those records simply did not exist, and entire German units were wiped out virtually to a man. Day 6 D-Day Landing Beaches. Today we visited : 📍Omaha Beach 📍Omaha Memorial Museum 📍 The American Military Cemetery 📍 Utah Beach We made the 2 hour drive from our campsite not really knowing how we would feel about todays visit and we were hit with the sheer devastation that happened during WW2. We learned about the five D-day landing beaches and about the allies approach. We learned so much today about French history and left with a very heavy heart. The American Military cemetery has over 9,000 American soldiers buried in it each with a white marble cross. Some are even anonymous. At the cemetery there is also a garden with “walls of the missing” where there are the names of 1500 soldiers that were never found , and “whose places of rest are known only to God”. I took some photos to share with you all as i feel these are places we should all be visiting and learning about the past and I have posted them here while trying to remain respectful to the dead also. If you get the opportunity to visit then i highly recommend you do. FOR SALE - World War II. WWII D-Day OPERATION OVERLORD Utah Beach Higgins LCVP Boat Drop Ramp Bolt Recovered in 1957. This extremely rare and museum grade World War II D-Day Utah Beach artifact is a heavy bolt from the drop down ramp of the Higgins Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP). On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied troops landed across five beaches (OMAHA, UTAH, GOLD, SWORD, and JUNO) on the coast of Normandy, France. It was the long-awaited invasion, a great Allied thrust upon which the hopes of millions of Europeans lay. One of the major associations that has become firmly entrenched in our collective memory of D-Day is the “Higgins boat.” An estimated 1,500 were used on June 6 to land troops and vehicles on French shores. This Higgins LCVP bolt was discovered in 1957 where since June 6th, 1944 it lay hidden under the Normandy ocean and sand of Utah Beach. The entire Higgins LCVP drop-down ramp door was professionally recovered and preserved. For those that remember a news article on BBC breakfast in 2019 in Normandy, a legendary gentleman and former Army Commando with the Royal Engineers came on and stole the hearts of the nation. That man was named Harry Billinge and I was fortunate enough to meet him in person as were many serving and former Commando Engineers. All equally in awe of such a man. Sadly Harry passed away in 2022 leaving behind his wife Sheila. El jardín Arromanches D Day, rinde homenaje a los veteranos de la Batalla de Normandía. El jardín se conoce como D-Day 75 Garden y se exhibió por primera vez en el RHS Chelsea Garden Show en mayo de 2019. Se inauguró oficialmente en su nuevo emplazamiento permanente en Arromanches en el 75º aniversario del Día D. Ahora tiene vistas a Mulberry Harbour y Gold Beach, que es una de las cinco playas del desembarco del Día D. Bill Pendell fue elegido para representar a los veteranos, aunque lamentablemente falleció a los 97 años en diciembre de 2018. En 1944, Bill desembarcó en Gold Beach a los 22 años.
