Finally finished the second dress for the ball. Same self-drafted pattern, just cut the yoke a different shape and did double puffed sleeves. The skirt is cut fuller to accommodate a hoop and I ended up cartridge pleating it and facing the hem with batiste since I ran out of fabric to cut the skirt any longer. We’ve all got to play the hand we’re dealt, right? For each Tuesday’s ensemble, I aim to build a bridge between me and the people I meet. Stopped at @kays_korner_cookstreetvillage and connected with a lovely gal who says her 90-year-old mother is really enjoying her #turnedouttuesdays calendar, and that it’s sparking meaningful conversations between mother and daughter, reminiscing about fashions from the last century. Four years ago I took a little break from bookbinding to work on something a little different: wigs! I was commissioned to make eleven wigs for the “Kimonos: Kyoto to Catwalk” exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum which ran from the 27th August 2020 to the 25th October 2020. The wigs for this exhibition were intended to be abstract and an impression of the silhouette, rather than incredibly detailed, so as not to distract too much from the costume displayed on the mannequins. They were made from tones of grey and black crinoline to match the colour of the mannequins so as not to distract from the wonderful bright Kimonos. When wigs are requested for mannequins, they are often made in house at the museum by the Textiles Conservation and Mounting Department, but due to restrictions on time they were outsourced on this occasion. The exhibition is now on again, but at the V&A Museum in Dundee (https://www.vam.ac.uk/dundee/whatson/exhibitions/kimono) until Sunday 5th January 2025. If you look at the @vadundee Instagram page you can see some of the wigs I made in their recently featured videos, it's good to see them again! Where I am, versus where I began. And bonus content. Where I am: an elliptical cage crinoline that is the right shape but, for the most part, pinned together. Shape achieved in part thanks to a big bum pad. I feel I've heard that this is an issue with this pattern (more below). Where I began: I started with the Truly Victorian elliptical cage crinoline pattern and a kit for making it. These were sitting in my stash for a LONG time. I'm 4'11", and I measured the pattern, so I was aware it would be WAY too long for me. I gave it a try to see how much too long. Uh, about 8". I eliminated 2 hoops, making it shorter and making the circumference smaller (a good idea for proportion's sake anyway). That means the bag needs to be modified. I also need to sew things down permanently. Bonus content: if she fits, Penny sits. Also, I made the mistake of wearing an unhemmed (that is, too long) skirt over my crinoline. If you’re following me, you’ve probably seen some of the pictures from the ball last weekend! What you haven’t seen yet are the underpinnings to that dress. Between lacking energy anyway (thank you M.E.) and having a wedding a few weeks before the ball, the undergarments are somewhat improvised and not really what they should be: - an extant chemise (formerly belonging to A. R. Marshall) - modern tights - extant split drawers (also formerly belonging to A Marshall, but of such different provenance I’m not sure they belonged to the same person) - a red linen/cotton petticoat made when I had thoughts of doing something 1790s working class - an 1870s(?) corset borrowed from @shesewsontheseashore_bespoke - a crinoline ‘made’ (if such a word can be used for a garment almost entirely held together by safety pins) from the kit from @vena_cava_design. The frill is incredibly badly made and very loosely tacked on so it can eventually be attached to a proper petticoat, instead of having to pretend. - two ‘petticoats’ - one of a print from @libertylondon made using a @folkwearsewing.patterns 1890s skirt pattern, and the other made to a sort of frankensteined version of the @scrooppatterns fantail skirt pattern that made best use of the fabric As you can probably tell, everything needed an iron (including the ball gown), but that didn’t happen. The first part of our honeymoon was taken in Bath, for the Victorian Ball in the Assembly Rooms on Saturday evening. This is an event for costumers to have a reason to make a thing and show it off, and so in the 3 intervening weeks since the wedding, @juliet.braidwood rattled off a crinoline! As the ball was 1860s-themed, she couldn't use her 1840s wedding dress. I, however, was just very unfashionable in my wedding suit. J's dress is all her own work, apart from the buttons, which I made. My coat and jacket were made by @shesewsontheseashore_bespoke, the waistcoat fabric from @summersunstories, and the hat an Etsy buy from @rosam.pardo. Other bits I owned already.
