Museum quality Victorian printed rosebud cotton voile tiered pagoda bell sleeve dress circa 1852! The condition on this dress is outstanding and it even has its original engageants aka ‘false sleeves’ or under sleeves if you want to entirely cover your arms. Tightly pleated fan front bodice that fans out and up the bust and shoulders. Tightly pleated sweeping skirt - the early 1850s would have had a decent size crinoline underneath to show how wide the skirt can sweep. I love it with just a petticoat underneath (as pictured) for a more easy going yet romantic look. Now for sale in my shop - 25” waist. . . . . . #victoriandress #victorianfashion #victorianclothing #1850sdress #1850sfashion #pagodasleeves #bellsleeves #antiquedress #rarevintage #historicaldress #historicalfashion #fanfrontdress #printedcotton #19thcenturyfashion #daisyandstellavintage

Not an artifact, but soon to be on exhibit at the Arabia Steamboat Museum. We don’t really have any women’s clothes in the collection, so people are often asking me about them. I made this dress to go on display in my work area as a visual aid. The cargo recovered from the Arabia was nearly all prepaid manufactured orders, either going to dry goods stores or predesignated orders. Women’s clothes were still mostly made in the home at that time, which is part of the reason why we have many bolts of fabric but no ready-made dresses. I’ve been in limbo on so many projects for so long, it’s nice to see several of them edging toward completion… #victoriansewing #handsewn #crinoline #hoopskirt #1850s #1850sfashion #1850sdress #historicalsewing

Evening Dress • ca. 1850-55 • silk, cotton • American • The Metropolitan Museum of Art (2009.300.921a, b) -------- "This subdued plaid of this dress was designed after Scottish tartans, which became popular in the 1850s due to Queen Victoria (1837-1901) taking part-time residence at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The plaid stripes alternating with more subdued plain stripes draw particular attention to the beauty of the textile. The female silhouette of the middle of the 19th century consisted of a fitted corseted bodice and wide full skirts. The conical skirts developed between the 1830s, when the high waist of the Empire silhouette was lowered, and the skirts became more bell-shaped, to the late 1860s, when the fullness of the skirts was pulled to the back and the bustle developed. The flared skirts of the period gradually increased in size throughout and were supported by a number of methods. Originally support came from multiple layers of petticoats which, due to weight and discomfort, were supplanted by underskirts comprised of graduated hoops made from materials such as baleen, cane, and metal. The fashions during this time allowed the textiles to stand out because of the vast surface areas of the skirt and a relatively minimal amount of excess trim." - Collections Database . . . . . . . 📸: The Metropolitan Museum of Art #fashionhistory #dresshistory #historicalfashion #vintagefashion #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturydress #19thcentury #costumehistory #historyoffashion #historyofdress #historicalcostume #fashionarchives #fashionstudies #historicaldress #costumedesign #arthistory #1850sfashion #1850sdress #1850seveningdress #victorianfashion #victoriandress #victorianeveningdress

Recently sold this 1840s bodice likely made of Chinese export silk would have originally formed part of an evening dress, as is often the case the large quantity of decorative silk in the skirt has been unpicked and likely reused at some point in time. I can only imagine how the golden dragons set against a bold red satin must have turned heads at a dinner or ball during the mid 19th century. #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturydress #1800sdress #antiquecostume #antiquetextiles #1840sdress #1850sdress #chinesesilk #antiquechinese #antiquechineseembroidery #chineseembroidery #antiqueembroidery #1840sfashion #victoriandress #victorianfashion #victorianbodice

I’m so excited to finally share some photos of my 1850s-1860s ensemble! I started the project with the tentative goal of having it completed before the Civil War reenactment at @tannehillpark. However, since I hadn’t ever made a clothing item before, my mom and I decided it would be better for me to make a functional mock-up of the bodice out of a sheet we purchased at an estate sale. I ended up not having enough time to complete a second bodice before the reenactment, so I decided to wear my white bodice with my blue skirt. Hopefully I’ll be able to finish up my blue bodice soon! I was extremely pleased with the fabric I purchased online—a lovely blue cotton from The Old Country Store! (@theoldcountrystore) It feels great, was lovely to sew up, and looks great! The fabric for the bodice was a Liberty brand sheet. The pattern was purchased from Amazon Drygoods. Overall, I would say I’m pleased with the pattern—it made up very well. However, more detailed instructions would’ve been helpful, especially for a beginning seamstress! Luckily, I had my mom, @by.faith.farm.makes, and YouTube to help me out! I feel like I learned a lot on this journey, and I’m looking forward to making more pieces for my historical wardrobe! I’m currently working on making a collar, using a tutorial by @prairie.flower.historical! _______ 🌿 _______ #1850sfashion #1850s #1850sdress #1860sfashion #1860s #civilwarreenactment #civilwarhistory #civilwarreenactor #civilwardress #civilwarwomen #19thcenturyfashion #handsewn #historicalcostume #historicalfashion

Some noise for the turmeric dress!! Made from cotton lawn. Not 100% there, I have some more ruffles cut out which I plan to add when I have time to hem them, but for now, I think it's pretty darn cute. Here I wore it to a party recently, so the shoes are anachronistic. a late 1850s printed muslin dress. The dress features a fan front bodice, bishop sleeves and an extremely full flounced skirt. The dress fastens down the centre front with hooks and bars. The skirt fullness is gathered into the waistline. The bodice section of the dress is lined with linen the skirt is unlined and finished at the hem with a linen facing. The dress is in good condition for its age. The muslin has a few holes the largest of which is hidden under one of the skirt flounces. Several areas of darning and old mends. There is some fraying to the left side of the front opening. Quite a few stains and areas with discolouration across the muslin, luckily the printed pattern helps make this less noticeable. A very beautiful example of mid 19th century fashion. Bust measurement 34 inches waist measurement 27 inches. More Marie-Geneviève and Jean! First pic is when Marie-Geneviève is pregnant with their first child Auguste. So I mentioned before that Marie-Geneviève was only married for a while but that when I was still figuring out her backstory, so basically when she was pregnant with her and Jean’s second child around 1850, their relationship had a lot of tensions and they were constantly fighting, and Jean ended up leaving Marie-Geneviève. However, they never got divorced for many reasons (I’ll explain in better detail later) and around the mid 1870s Jean and Marie-Geneviève meet again for the first time in over two decades. They decide to stay married and end up repairing their relationship (Jean had changed a lot for the better during those two decades). So that explains the second pic lol. Last pic is a modern AU thing I drew where Jean and Marie-Geneviève are in swimsuits, which I mainly drew to show their body types better but also because I’ve been longing to swim again 😅 🎀 🎀 🎀 #1840s #1850s #1870s #1850sdress #1870sdress #romanticoc #historicaloc #historicalocs #myart #art #artsitsofinstagram #artistsofig #youngartist #historicalcouple #occouple #coupleoc #angst #angstart #traditionalart #myoc #myocs #ocart #ocartwork #artwork #ocartist #antiquecouple #antiquefashion #romanticera #victorianera #victoriandress

Seeing these dresses together makes me so happy. They match so well together. Not only in silhouette but also in colours, which wasn’t intentional at all. A friend of mine pointed out that even the lace is reflected in the netting and vice versa. Again, unintentional, but I don't mind one bit. I've still been meaning to add more red beads and sequins to the Belle skirt but clearly that's a problem for future me. Love this portrait, and how the woman’s expression manages to be direct, yet a bit wistful, too. Such beautiful eyes! Is she leaning forward to listen more closely to whatever you’re saying, or to make a point of her own? . Repost from @jeremy.k.simien • A mid 1850s portrait painting of an unknown Lady. I remember acquiring this painting around 2015 and being struck at how similar she looked to some of the ladies in my family. While some prefer not to know much of anything about a sitter in a portrait— However, someone like me, who is interested in hidden and corrective histories, always feels a bit of sadness when staring into the eyes of a sitter whose name has been lost to time. Regardless, as an object of art, this is stunning! #( Sorry for my typos—I post too early and too late ☕️ 😱) #1850sdress #perioddress #antique #antiqueart #victorianfashion #victorianera #antiquejewelry #victorianjewelry #louisxvi

I truly regret having ever laid eyes on this fabric. This is going to be the most wasteful project I’ve ever done, but I’ve already sunk too much cost and effort to quit now. #sewingsucks #historicalsewing #1850sdress #1850sfashion #hoopskirt #hoopskirtera #matchingplaid #patternmatching #piecingisperiod

Pictures do NOT do this lovely lady justice! She’s so gorgeous in person and I’m so lucky to have her in my collection now! And she’s so petite- 48” from neck to hem!! Definitely meant for a teen girl who was growing (there’s evidence the dress was let out AND let down to accommodate a growing body). #historicalfashion #1840sfashion #1850sfashion #1840sdress #1850sdress #antiqueclothing #antiqueclothingcollector #ithaspockets
