In Roman times, the hottest most unbearable days were given this name as they happened at the same time that the star Sirius (the Dog Star) seemed to rise and set with the sun. As Sirius is so bright they believed that it radiates extra heat onto the Earth. In the UK the weather outlook looks to be showing that our dog days might be about to begin.
