During the last days of school before graduation, my seniors and I had a discussion about values and how we need to make sure to protect them in order for them to become strong and establish roots that will keep us grounded. They chose one value they will protect and wrote it on a popsicle stick, and we went to the MACC and planted seeds (their values) in little pots. They were able to take them home to tend to them and watch them grow. I’m missing my students; it’s hard not to see them every day and hear about their lives. 🎉 Whoop whoop! Day one of the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, is complete, and what an inspiring day it was! 🌟 Dr. Anashay Wright’s opening keynote was truly thought-provoking. She emphasized the importance of disrupting our own thinking to embrace our true selves. “We must self-disrupt to challenge our way of thinking. Every day, we need to reflect and unlearn the deficit data that’s been told to us and embrace our imperfections,” she said. This resonated deeply with me. Dr. Wright also reminded us to “know your power, do not cower,” encouraging us to focus on the strengths of our students rather than a deficit mentality. The quote that struck me the most was, “You are not the savior. You are servant leaders, supporting and growing the next generation of leaders.” Such a powerful reminder of our role in education! After an enriching day at the conference, I even had a chance to do some sightseeing in Atlanta. The aquarium is a must-see! 🐠🐟 Looking forward to day two and more incredible insights! Happening now as part of the CSS Internal Learning Institute! Having formed and normed, our CSS team is listening to a rich panel discussion with two of our partner principals, Dr. Peggy Hester of West Bladen High School in North Carolina and Elizabeth Messmann of Newcomers High School in New York. We are a captive audience, experiencing this panel conversation with gratitude as we learn from Principal Messmann and Dr. Hester. These two leaders are sharing with us more about their student populations and experience as a partner with CSS (Newcomers High School as a CSS Community School and West Bladen High School implementing Peer Group Connection and Achievement Mentoring). A bit more about our panelists: Elizabeth Messmann began working for the NYC Public Schools as an ESL teacher after graduating from CUNY Queens college in 2005 with a degree in Applied Linguistics:TESOL. Principal Messmann has worked in public middle and high schools in Brooklyn and Queens serving as an ENL teacher, ENL coordinator, school programmer, Assistant Principal and since September 2021, the Principal of Newcomers High School, which serves over 1400 newly arrived immigrant students. Dr. Peggy Hester has worked in education for twenty-three years. After teaching history and working as an instructional technology facilitator in Robeson County, she transitioned into the role of Assistant Principal at West Bladen High School. In 2016, she became the principal of West Bladen High School. We are excited to announce that Seeding Success will be joining our partners in the Shelby County Community Schools Coalition for another year with the The @edredesignlab's Institute for Success Planning 🏫💡 Teams from sixteen communities across the nation—including Memphis, TN—will come together to work on building and sustaining local initiatives for success planning. According to EdRedesign, success planning is “a relationship-based approach that connects each child or youth to an adult Navigator who co-creates a personalized plan for action, in partnership with their families and other caring adults.” The objective of these local initiatives is to help youth thrive by connecting them with supports and opportunities for enrichment throughout childhood. The Success Planning 2024 Community of Practice will kick off in July with a summer workshop at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, MA. I love designing schools. Don't get to do it much of late un- fortunately. This is the initial concept in 2006 for a small primary school in a low income area on the Mornington Peninsula. The school was already open to the community with no fence to speak of. The arrival place to the school was designed to tie in with the adjacent local small retail and business area. The community was to be invited in, to support the school and perhaps the school could support the community, establishing a symbiotic relationship. The arrival area was to have a shared library, hall and cafe where the facilities of the school could be made useful for the community; the local mobile library semi-trailer could park next to the school library and work together. The cafe would be used to teach the kids cooking and coffee making (:-) and utilise the practices Stephanie Alexander was promoting at the time; cooking fresh ingredients, improving nutrition and the love of food for pupils and parents both. Today, I attended a conference for Community School Directors across @nycschools. I'm a firm believer that "professional development" should also be personal development. When I go to conferences, I always choose at least one workshop for which the only purpose is to fill my cup so I can continue to pour from it. Today, I got a 3-for-1 that only God would have orchestrated. 1) @stefdonarts showcased their melinated acrylic paints and demonstrated this activity where we take a blob and transform it into a picture of someone in the room. This brother and I chose each other, unbeknownst to the other, until we exchanged pictures at the end (see middle chocolate brown blob AKA "Beauty") 2) @poeticblackgurl walked us through creating a poetic vision board - a model of what might be done with a group of students to help them release creatively and affirm themselves all at once. We were short on time, so I filled it in with items from the other 2 workshops. 3) @epiphanyblue reminded us that it is possible to support others without neglecting ourselves. One way to do this is to use the acronym A.C.T. to avoid burnout: Assess, Contemplate, Take Action regarding our stressors (see theTo Do list) What I loved about all these presentations is that the workshops/programs came from a genuine need that the founder/presenter had: - How can I best serve the high school students in my art class who are having trouble mixing hues to match their skin color? - What creative outlet can I tap into in this period of time where I'm feeling overwhelmed? - How can I prioritize self-care to help me get through this pandemic? It's a great thing to leave a work function and feel committed to taking care of me! I'm off to take a a quick jog! How will you care for YOU today? #selfcare #artseducation #communityschools

Students at Cedar Ridge Elementary School buzzed with excitement this year thanks to Cindy Rodgers, The Baby Fold's Community Schools Coordinator! After speaking with an interested parent last fall, Cindy helped build a new basketball skills camp for the students. With teachers as assistant coaches, a local travel team who provided mentorship, and a school parent as a head coach, the students loved the new experience! And - camp attendance doubled from fall to spring! Cindy was quick to share how impactful the camp was for Cedar Ridge's bilingual students. "As you know, Cedar Ridge Elementary School houses Unit 5's bilingual program.
