I have been sooo excited to cover Ironwood! Ever since I got to demo the first physical prototype at PaxU last year, I have been itching to get it tabled and give it a go. It’s got everything I enjoy in a board games: area control, asymmetrical factions and win conditions, card-driven gameplay (that are multi-use!), and fantastic artwork, all wrapped in about an hour’s experience. This asymmetrical 2 player dueling game features two clans: the Woodwalkers and the Ironclad. Each are equipped with their player board, an asymmetric deck of action cards, and components thematic to their lore. The Woodwalkers feature screen-printed wooden tokens while the Ironclad boast metal coins. The Woodwalkers goal is to strategically move their tribesmens through the forest to find 3 ancient Totems and bring them back to their home. The Ironclad’s goal is to bolster their defenses in the mountains with their armies in order to collect Larimor crystals and boost their mechanical inventions to build 3 forges. My first impressions of this game is stellar; I love it! The card play is satisfying to carry out faciton specific actions manuvering your armies around. The combat is quick and very tug of war like; you want to have the higher strength to defeat your enemies but still want to actually WIN the fight with dominance. So the card you bid + your armies will determine your damage, defense, and dominance value. It’s a cool balance of “do I play a high strength card with low dominance and hope to wipe my opponent out? Or ignore damage and shoot to dominate the battle”. With this, combat is quick and tactile; no other extra complex modifiers to take into consideration. I am very pleased with the two player experience! Winner, winner, chicken dinner! 🤩 Hubby & I had about an hour to burn on Sunday before a scheduled call with family, so I suggested a quick game of Fantasy Realms. We actually ended up getting 3 games in, & wonder of all wonders, I WON ALL 3!! 😲 If you’ve been around for awhile, you’ve probably heard me complain about how hubby wins most games we play. And I generally don’t mind because I just enjoy playing just for the shared activity, but when I do win, I get pretty excited. 🥳 ▫️▫️▫️ Since I log all of our plays in the @BGStatsApp, I happened to notice that these 3 wins really swayed the stats in my favor for this game. Hubby & I have played 14 times since @CoffeeAndCooperation gifted me Fantasy Realms, & I’ve won 9 of them! I think hubby wants to blame the luck of the draw, but I think there’s skill in knowing when to pivot your strategy when the cards aren’t going the way you hope. For example, when I drew the Gem of Order card, I thought I’d get points for only a 3-card run, but when I saw other cards in the discard area that fit, I completely changed what I was collecting & ended up getting my highest score ever. Further exploration is needed 😎 Man, I freaking love AoS! I need to play it more. With more players. And I need to de-sticker my acryclic tiles. But I also need to play more 18xx. And cube rails. So many trains, so little time 🤷♂️ • Locked myself in early on and struggled to keep up the whole game. Shares were issued, tears were cried. Tried to make it so we both lost, but my girlfriend met the cube requirement in the end 🤷♂️ Final scores were 71-40.

Yesterday I tested the solo / co-op mode for Disney Lorcana: Illumineer's Quest Deep Trouble. And I have to say - it was heck of fun! The set came with two prebuilt decks and I used one of them (the one with Mickey and lots of Magic Brooms) against the villain Ursula. . The aim of the solo / co-op mode is to get all the players to 20 lore before Ursula gets to 40 lore. Sounds easy, right? Well, it isn't. There are four different difficulty levels you can choose from and even with the easiest one I wasn't sure if I had a chance or not. At most I got to 16 lore but one of Ursula's cards pushed me back to 14 lore. . With the prebuilt deck I used I was able to see some great combos and synergies between the cards which made the gameplay exciting. I haven't yet built any of my own decks but the solo mode felt also like a good way to try such decks. And why couldn't you use it to try and modify other prebuilt decks. . I'm very pleased with the solo mode! PLANTA NUBO 🪻🌳🌷🐝🫧🎲 Die Menschen leben in der Zukunft der Solarpunk - Welt Overgrown auf gewaltigen Bäumen, genannt Arbor, und bauen Gärten über den Wolken an. Der produzierte Sauerstoff reinigt die Atmosphäre von einer vorherigen Umweltkatastrophe. Klingt interessant, die Geschichte kommt aber leider im Spiel nicht wirklich rüber. PLANTA NUBO ist ein Expertenspiel. Die vielen Mechaniken sind stark verzahnt und im Laufe des Spiels triggern die einzelnen Aktionen immer umfangreichere Kombinationen und Abfolgen. Den Überblick zu behalten erfordert definitiv Konzentration und Ausdauer 😅. Das Spiel ist für jeden Spieler sehr asymmetrisch und daher spielt es sich auch für alle Teilnehmer komplett unterschiedlich, was mir richtig gut gefällt. Die Mechanismen sind verständlich und logisch und funktionieren sehr gut. Das Spielmaterial ist in Ordnung, allerdings sind uns im 4-Personen Spiel einige Marker ausgegangen. Natürlich haben wir uns mit anderem Spielmaterial weiter beholfen, aber nun ja. Das, finde ich, sollte bei einem hochpreisigen Spiel eigentlich nicht passieren 😕 Wer große, komplexe Spiele mit viel Engine-Building mag, ist hier gut aufgehoben. Bauchspieler werden hier, gerade zum Ende hin, stark abgehängt. Spaß macht es trotzdem (ja, ich war die Bauchspielerin 😂). Vor kurzem habe ich den Nachfolger von Die Tiere vom Ahorntal gespielt und möchte hier kurz niederschreiben, wie mir Maple Valley im direkten Vergleich dazu gefallen hat ☺️ Zuerst einmal finde ich das Artwork Zuckersüß 😍 Ich liebe die liebevoll illustrierten Karten. In Maple Valley organisieren die Erwachsenen im Dorf ein Frühlingsfest und wir Kinder haben den „Auftrag“ verschiedene Zutaten im Wald zu sammeln um damit verschiedene Partygeschenke herzustellen. Im groben kann man sagen, dass die Idee von Maple Valley gleich ist zu Tiere vom Ahorntal. Wir sammeln Ressourcen und spielen Ideenkarten aus 🛠️ Der Weg dahin ist jedoch unterschiedlich. Während wir in Ahorntal ein Arbeitereinsetzspiel mit zusätzlichen Würfeln haben, haben wir hier nur einen Arbeiter, der sich mit Hilfe von Karten auf dem Plan bewegt. Die Karten geben den möglichen Weg vor und bringen uns zusätzliche Boni. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Kartengetriebenen Spielen hat man hier kein Handkartenlimit. Am Ende der Runde nimmt man alle benutzen Karten wieder auf die Hand und hat so zu Beginn jeder Runde wieder alle Möglichkeiten. Im Laufe des Spiels erhält man normalerweise mehr Karten und kann so auch mehr Aktionen ausführen. Dies führt dazu, dass die Runden zum Ende hin etwas länger werden. Was mag ich lieber? Ich kann klar sagen, dass MIR Die Tiere vom Ahorntal mehr liegt ❤️ Ich liebe die Zufälligkeit der Würfel und das man nicht alles vorausplanen kann. Maple Valley ist da ganz anders. Rein Theoretisch kann man gleich zu Beginn die komplette Runde durchplanen mit den Karten, die man auf der Hand hält. Zufall gibt es hier eher weniger, etwas wegnehmen kann man sich hier nicht (außer vielleicht Karten in der Auslage). Dies führt dazu, dass Maple Valley viel strategischer gespielt werden kann, was ich aber bei dieser Art von Wohlfühlspiel gar nicht will 😅 Hier ist es also reine Geschmackssache ob man lieber etwas Zufall und Glück will oder doch lieber mehr strategische Planung. Ich würde Maple Valley auch etwas schwerer einstufen als Die Tiere vom Ahorntal auch wenn es wie ein Kinderspiel aussieht ist es eher ein leichtes Kennerspiel ☝🏼 Habt ihr beide Spiele schon gespielt? ☺️

Expanding your studio is free you’ll flip the card round and slot it under the previous studio card (brown section showing) gaining all sorts of immediate bonuses, points or abilities. Expanding your print has costs requiring you to place or move a spare paint pot to a matching landscape type that the image you wish to paint requires. Decisions are tough sometimes. Do you leave school early taking the one card you really need instead of gaining 2 or 3 cards with useful abilities? Do you paint the print or expand your studio? When either your studio or your print match some diploma criteria you may choose to take the points now BUT you could also choose to go for more points but you can’t go back to the one you Passover later in the game. What to do!!!! Paint pots are your currency. The more you have the easier it is to get stuff painted. But the ability to move them is also key. You begin with 1 and not adding to this could limit you later. With 11 cards in a print the round ends and you enter final scoring. Game night! And we decided to play some Solar 175 from @cogitoergomeeple. While I've been boardgaming for close to 20 years at this point. I've never really got on with campaign games, to the point where I finish very few of the ones I start. I think it's because I tend to play them solo and then I get distracted and don't come back. I don't think that'll be the case for solar 175. For a start off, I'm playing this with other people. Add to that some of my favourite mechanics, (bag building, worker placement and area control) and you've got a recipe for success with me! After game number 1 I am the only player that didn't get to cross off any achievements. Mainly because everything I did well on I ended up getting beaten on a tie breaker. Oh well. Ok no one told me how difficult Woodcraft actually is lol. I was completely fooled by the artwork and theme thinking I was going into a fun little euro. That could not be further from the truth. I should’ve known that a Suchy co-design was gonna bring the heat. Woodcraft utilizes a similar action rondel to Praga Caput Regni where the wheel is always turning giving you different benefits whenever you take an action. The bread and butter of the game is mitigating your dice to fulfill contracts that give you an array of points, money in the form of blueberries, and other resources. It’s easy in theory but everything is so tight in the game that I have a hard time filling multiple orders at a time. I did enjoy Woodcraft more than I thought I would but I think I prefer Praga to this. While I generally like games that are tighter in resources, it’s hard to deny the satisfying action comboing in Praga. I’m determined to return to Woodcraft though until I am somewhere in the ballpark of what is considered to be a good score (110). We’re comfortably sitting in the 60s-70s atm haha. Wish me luck 🫠
My self imposed Alphabet series challenge has left me pulling games off my shelf that I’ve been wanting to play for a while. Because of this, I finally played Dogfight!: Rule the Skies in 20 Minutes (@pscgamesuk ) I’m already a huge fan of the other two player game from the same publisher (but different designer) Caesar! So I have been looking forward to trying this as well. In Dogfight! You are playing as two fighting Biplanes from WWI. Starting across the board from one another, you are in a never ending chase to get behind the opponent and attack. With a similar bag pull mechanic, you hide your movement options behind a privacy screen as this is a competitive game. Simultaneously, both players will play a movement token that may also have an attack on it as well. If one of the players is within 4 spaces of the plane in front of them (but not sharing a space), they will be able to attack for the amount shown on the tile displayed. This game play will continue over three rounds, or until one of the biplanes is taken down. While I enjoyed this game at its base, it comes with 9 different planes, all with different movement and attack tiles, and some with different abilities. There are also 4 different scenarios for advanced play, a double sided board to change attack conditions, and a solo mode. I look forward to diving into this further and playing different combinations of scenarios and biplanes. Have you given this one a try yet? Which is your favorite of the 20-minute, 2-player series?

We had our first play session on the balcony for this summer! It was a bit chilly still as our balcony was at the play time on the shadowy side of the building, though. . But in any case, my son and I had fun! We played Pokemon Labyrinth which is basically just a Pokemon themed Labyrinth game. The green tiles doesn't look like much but luckily the colourful Pokemons make the game look cute. There are lots of Pokemons here that I don't know the name of but.. I do know some of them! . Wir spielen eine Fraktion die sich in Brasilien ausbreitet und dabei Gebäude (Zuckerrohr-/Baumwoll-/Kaffeeplantagen, Sägewerke, Handelsposten), Städte und Bildungsstätten errichtet. Wir haben einen Marker mit dem wir aus unseren Aktionen ( Rekrutieren, Gemälde erwerben, Bauen, Erneuern, Herstellen, Hafen und Markt) jeweils eine ausführen. Danach kann eine Einheit ein Feld bewegt werden. Das Spiel geht über 3 Epochen und eine Epoche endet, wenn ein Spieler sein Epochenziel erreicht hat. Vielleicht merkt man es, hier fliegt jetzt nicht der Enthusiasmus Hammer… Am Ende kann man alles irgendwie erreichen. Am Markt kaufen, Gebäude errichten oder erneuern, die notwendigen Ressourcen sind faktisch immer irgendwie da. Gemälde bringen Vorteile, es gibt hier und da Gebiete zu entdecken, was auch irgendwelche Boni bringt. Man kann auch kämpfen, was ähnlich wie bei Scythe abläuft. Man kann auch Aktionen verbessern, was ähnlich wie bei Scythe passiert. ⭐️ HARMONIES ⭐️ It’s been a while since I posted something. I sometimes forgot to take pictures of the games we played. Also we went on holiday to the Island of Curaçao and we had some boardgames with us, but it was waaayyy to hot to do anything else besides laying on the beach in the shade and snorkeling in the beautiful blue sea!😍 Today we played this new game Harmonies. Very easy rules, teached it in two minutes to the other players, but it’s quite the puzzle. A bit of a mix between Azul (drafting tiles) and Cascadia (scoring for the animals and different landscapes). Shake that City von @alderaceg 🎲 1-4 Spieler 🎲 20-40 min. 🎲 ab 10 Jahren Bei Shake that City fällt einem sofort der tolle Shaker im Spiel, der nach Betätigung ein 3x3 Raster aus kleinen Würfeln erstellt, auf. Wir müssen nun, aus diesen kleinen Würfeln, eine Farbe auswählen und in Form von Plättchen auf unser Tableau legen. Dabei gibt das Tableau Vorgaben wie wir etwas am besten platzieren sollen, um viele Punkte zu machen. Die Plättchen selbst geben zusätzlich eine Vorgabe was erfüllt werden muss, damit diese dann auch wieder Punkte geben. So wollen z.B. Häuser nebeneinander stehen und auf keinen Fall an eine Fabrik grenzen oder der Park 🏞 möchte an Häuser 🏡 oder an eine Fabrik 🏭 angrenzen. Mir hat Shake that City gut gefallen. Ich bin aber sowieso ein Liebhaber was Plättchenlegespiele angeht und von daher hatte das Spiel gleich schon Pluspunkte bei mir. @devirgames had made some truly stunning small and medium sized box games recently. The White Castle Bamboo The Red Cathedral 3 Ring Circus Just to name a few. All brilliant games. And they are back with Sand. A euro style game that combines, wait for it… pick-up-and-deliver with a bit of engine building. Yeah! I was intrigued too. And it plays so well. Game one, not so much. You may find yourself very resource light early on! But once you get the idea of this game, oh my, it’s a beauty! My favourite pick-up-and-deliver? Well, it’s not hard to win that category is it?
