This sporting scene is something of an enigma in so much that the assembled team is unknown in terms of both their individual names or their particular team. The hats being worn feature ‘B v S’ about which I have not been unable to unearth anything. This was photographed by Albert Wilkes, who lived in Legge St in West Bromwich and was also a former professional footballer, having initially played for both Walsall & WBA before playing for Aston Villa between 1898 and 1907. He moved to Legge St somewhere between 1901 and 1911 and died in 1936. His son Albert Wilkes Junior continued the business until it was sold to Colorsport in 1970, so I wonder if anyone can recall the name. Meanwhile, who are these players? A lot of loving people, lots of Catholic roots, and I think a lot of people here glue together because they all identify with some of the same things. A lot of the family lines traced back to one another. Personally, I had an understanding of what it meant to be Creole and how Creole was defined from the mix of a different backgrounds, but I still identified myself as black.”

A nice day of drawing today...not my own but the wonderful, intense, surreal and thought-provoking drawings of @edisaacsartist in his exhibition 'Drawing Places' at Wolverhampton Art Gallery which I finally made it to today before it ends tomorrow. I also enjoyed a fascinating touring exhibition by the British museum 'Drawing Attention' which examined drawing by contemporary artists and made links with past artists including by Corot (my favourite today!) with an exciting Graham Sutherland study a close second. I also enjoyed a room of paintings by local artists such as Rob Perry how had a magnificent Black Country landscape on display, and Euan Johnson or @b4g_lord , whose work I also really admire. Have you heard of Johanna “Chona” July? 🧐We recently learned about Johanna, a Black Seminole and skilled horse breaker, born in 1860 in the Black Seminole settlement near Nacimiento, Mexico (she and her family later migrated to Texas). Johanna tamed wild horses for ranchers and the U.S. Army by using a unique method of leading the horse into the Rio Grande, getting it tired out while in the water, and then riding it back onto land. She would also clean her clothes while wearing them in the water! That’s a unique way to do laundry! These are the characteristics of the kitchen / living space that we wanted to maximise at the Sunbeam Factory development (@paragonlivingspace) in Wolverhampton. @lauren_project_studio explains the thought process behind aspects of the apartments’ design. “The painted datum line takes inspiration from the factory’s history; protecting the walls from moving machinery parts. We kept it simple with the remaining paint choices, emphasising the great floor to ceiling height. Black track lighting is purposefully chosen as a nod to the industrial setting. The kitchen design we chose was in a contemporary minimalist style, with the timber-effect flooring adding warmth whilst maintaining functionality and durability for the rental market. The furniture throughout the apartment focuses on injecting colour and comfort, whilst the window treatments and rugs adds softness.
