It's day 19 of the #shareyourbusiness2024 challenge for @thestourbridgeblog 19: how did you start? When my youngest was born (2015), a friend crocheted him a little mouse toy. It was super cute and I wanted to learn how to do that! So I googled 'how to crochet,' watched a video and decided it was too difficult!😆 Then I thought sewing might be fun..... So I bought myself a sewing machine from a well known online retailer and found out that sewing a straight line was nowhere near as easy as I hoped it would be 😂 I'd never used a sewing machine before - it definitely took some practice! Self taught by trail and error 😉 After deciding that making clothes was not for me, I made a bag. And the rest as they say, is history. Here is one of the first bags I ever made and sold, the bags which became my first best seller (the fabric is no longer being made unfortunately), my first business card, and then the kind of bags I make now, along with one of my favourite memory bears. It's been 8 and a half years now, and I'm three sewing machines and an overlocker (for the occasional cute little tshirt) down the line. There are still soooo many bags left to make - you ain't getting rid of me that easily! For me, every bag I sell is a milestone. Every follower I gain is a milestone. Literally ANYTHING I achieve is a milestone. Because milestones and goals ar hard to set and, in this day and age, even harder to achieve. Social media is a minefield. Algorithms decide that out of my 1400+ followers (fb and insta combined), maybe 50 of you see my posts 🙄 Add that to the 'it's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know' culture, Primark's pricing and Amazon's delivery times and, as a (super)small business, we're really up against it. End results of the inking up of my tetra pak collagraph of a long tailed tit 🙂 Inked it up using two different methods. Chine collé which uses tissue paper to add colour to the print and a la poupée where you place the colours of ink directly onto the plate and then clean it back very carefully so not to blend the colours too much.
