When the Schools Shut Down A Young Girl’s Story Of Virginia’s “Lost Generation” And The Brown V. Board Of Education Of Topeka Decision Written by Yolanda Gladden, as told to Dr. Tamara Pizzoli Illustrated by Keisha Morris 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional with the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision. White lawmakers in Farmville, Virginia had other plans. . . . Public schools were closed throughout Prince Edward County for five years. This is the true story of how Yolanda Gladden, her family, and her community banded together to continue learning. Yolanda didn’t fully understand all the conversations she overheard, but in 1959-four years after the Brown v. Board of Education decision was made-she knew it was finally her turn to start school. The new integration law was supposed to be a step in the right direction. But by the time the first official day of classes rolled around, everything had changed again in Prince Edward County. In reaction to the school closings, some people hit the pavement to protest. Others hit the books. Black parents, teachers, and community members across the country rallied together and created their own education system-they started schools and learning centers just for them. Black children of all ages met in church basements and even at one another’s homes to attend school. From early morning to mid-afternoon, classes were in session. Education was their right and absolutely no one could keep them from learning, knowing, and growing. There are Notes from the Authors, and The Road to Desegregation of the American School System Timeline in the back of the book. @tamarapizzoli @kekkerz86 #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #whentheschoolsshutdown #thelostgeneration #brownvboardofeducationoftopekadecision #brownvboardofeducation #schooldesegregation #blackchildrensauthors #yolandagladden #tamarapizzoli #blackchildrensillustrators #keishamorris #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

Tasha’s Voice by Carmen Bogan Illustrated by Floyd Cooper and Daria Peoples Floyd Cooper Day Tasha was quiet. Whenever her teacher, Miss Garcia, called on her, Tasha’s tongue felt dry. Her heart pounded-boom, boom-and all she could say was . . . nothing. The class was preparing for a field trip to the park on Friday. Miss Garcia told the class they would see giant trees hundreds of years old! They would also see colorful wildflowers, and all sorts of birds and bugs and other creatures. It was going to be the best park ever, and Tasha imagined she was already there. Will Tasha find her voice? This book is in memory of Floyd Cooper. Mama’s Home written by Shay Youngblood illustrated by Lo Harris This book is a celebration of Mamas and those who possess the qualities of a Mother, shown through their love and care. I’m lucky I have seven Big Mamas and seven houses, one for every day of the week. My mother has to work late almost every day. Sometimes she has to go away for weeks. On Monday, Nurse Luella picks me up. She takes the training wheels off my bike. I fall down a few times, but pretty soon it feels like I can fly. We make pancakes for dinner. I want to be a pilot. On Tuesday, Miss Zikora sings while we hang clothes on the line to dry. After choir practice, we eat delicious fufu and pumpkin stew with our fingers. I think I want to sing in my own band. On Wednesday, Aunt Lily plays the blues on the radio and lets me beat out my math answers on pots and pans with a wooden spoon. Aunt Lily lets me measure the ingredients for the cornbread to go with the gumbo soup. I think I want to be a chef. When Mama comes home, we celebrate. There is an Author’s Note, recipe for Sweet Pink Punch, and a message from Christopher Myers in the back of the book. @shayyoungbloodarts @loharris_art #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooksaboutmamas #childrensbooks #mamashome #mothersday #childrensbooksformothersday #blackchildrensauthors #shayyoungblood #blackchildrensillustrators #loharris #blackmama #blackmamas #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

Eco Girl written and illustrated by Ken Wilson-Max Arbor Day Eve lived at the edge of a big, old forest, with trees as far as she could see. The day before Eve’s birthday, Mom, Dad, and Eve go to visit Grandma, deep in the forest. On Eve’s birthday, Grandma gives her a special gift wrapped in bark. If Kids Ran the World by Leo & Diane Dillon Earth Day If Kids Ran the World, we would make it a kinder, better place. We know people are hungry, so all over the world, everyone would have enough to eat. No matter how sick people were, they would have the medicine they needed. People would spend more time playing and less time worrying. No bullying would be allowed. All children would go to good schools where every teacher was nice and had lots of books, music, and art. Children would all live with people who loved them. More forests would be planted and protected. People would take care of the planet and animals and plants. Nobody would throw trash on the ground or in the ocean or make the air dirty. People would live together in peace. No more hate. If kids ran the world, would these things be possible? Yes, we think so. Thunder Rose by Jerdine Nolen Illustrated by Kadir Nelson For as long as the author could remember, she wanted to write a tall tale set in the Old West. Some who settled that land were Africans who had been treated as slaves in the South. It is a little known part of American history. Thunder Rose is a cowgirl heroine of the West, she has the power of thunder and lightning coursing through her veins. Thunder Rose performs all sorts of feats, including taming a stampeding herd of steers, and turning a tornado aside. The stories of Rose’s amazing abilities spread like wildfire, far and wide. And as sure as thunder follows lightning, and sun follows rain, whenever you see a spark of light flash across a heavy steel gray sky, listen to the sound of the thunder and think of Thunder Rose and her song. @jerdinenolen @kadirnelson #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #thunderrose #blackchildrensauthors #jerdinenolen #blackchildrensillustrators #kadirnelson #blackcowgirl #blackcowgirls #blackfolktales #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

Learning and movement, what a great combination! Action Based Learning (ABL) is academic learning using purposeful movement. It utilizes the natural link between the brain and the body to maximize learning. Brain research shows that when kids move, learning improves. For more information, check out @actionbasedlearning. 💜 Physical Health: Regular movement and exercise can help children maintain their physical health and well-being. It can improve their strength, flexibility, and overall fitness levels, which are important for their overall health, especially during stressful times like dealing with a parent's cancer diagnosis. 💜 Social Support: Engaging in movement activities, such as sports or group exercise classes, can provide children with a sense of community and social support. This can help them connect with others who may be going through similar experiences and build a support network outside of their immediate family. Social support is important for children dealing with the stress and uncertainty of a parent's cancer diagnosis. ABL was a method I used when I was a health and PE teacher. My kiddos always enjoyed the lessons that integrated this method. #thebigdiscoverybook #letsstarttheconversation #breastcancer #cancerawareness #thebigdiscoverybook #letsstarttheconversation #breastcancer #cancerawareness #kidsbooks #childrensbooks #childrensauthor #thebigdiscoverybook #thebigdiscovery #blackchildrensbooks #blackchildrensauthors and #blackchildrensauthor #breastcancerbook #childrensbookauthor #childrensbooks #cancerbooksforchildren #blackbreastcancer #breastcancersurvivor🎀 #tnbcsurvivor #breastcancerjourney #breastcancerprevention #breastcancerdiagnosis #ParentingWithCancer #MomsWithCancer #DadsWithCancer

Mama’s Library Summers By Melvina Noel Art By Daria Peoples This heartwarming book was very relatable. Just like the author, I owe my love of books, reading, and Black history to my Mama. I frequented the library as a child and participated in the summer reading club. I was also fortunate to have a Black third grade teacher, Miss Gail Allen, who taught us Black history, and introduced us to the poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar. Harriet Tubman is my hero to this day. Every summer, Mama drives her two daughters to the library to check out books. Only books about Black people, Mama’s directions. They read all summer long. I see myself in our library books. I am proud to be Black, thanks to Mama. When we are done with our books, Mama holds book review contests. We each share loud, strong opinions about each book. Winner gets an extra slice of Mama’s homemade sweet potato pie. There is an Author’s Note and an Illustrator’s Note at the end of the book. @melvinawrite4u #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #mamaslibrarysummers #blackchildrensauthors #melvinanoel #nationallibraryday #library #summerreading #reading #blackhistory #blackmama #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

Miles of Style Eunice W. Johnson and the Ebony Fashion Fair New Voices Award Winner Lisa D. Brathwaite Multitalented illustrator Lynn Gaines I remember attending the fabulous Ebony Fashion Fair and seeing Black excellence on the runway. This remarkable book tells us how it all started. Young Eunice loved to sew. She designed clothes for her dolls because she liked them to be well dressed. Her friends agreed that Eunice had a flair for fashion. Soon Eunice was crafting clothes for herself and designing shirts for her Daddy too. In high school, Eunice entered local sewing contests. When she earned her high school diploma, she also received certificates in sewing and tailoring. Eunice wondered how she could use her talents and style to serve others. Eunice’s parents supported her interests, but they also valued hard work and learning. So, Eunice enrolled at Alabama’s Talladega College. One night at a dance, Eunice met John H. Johnson, a young businessman. They married in 1941. Eunice and John noticed newspapers and magazines often printed stories that showed Black people in a negative light. The Johnson Publishing Company was born. Their new magazine was the Negro Digest. Three years later, Ebony was launched. Eunice believed readers would also be interested in fashion articles, and the “Fashion Fair” column was born. A good friend of Eunice’s reached out, she knew a group of women who would pay to attend a fashion show and raise money at the same time. Eunice liked the idea. Here was her chance to make a difference in the world the way she’d always wanted. There is an Author’s Note in the back of the book. @lisa_d_brat @lynngainesart #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #milesofstyle #eunicewjohnson #ebonyfashionfair #blackchildrensauthors #lisadbrathwaite #blackchildrensillustrators #lynngaines #womenshistorymonth #blackfashionshow #blackmodels #ebonymagazine #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

The Rapping Princess by Hannah Lee illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan Here is a story everyone should know. It’s the tale of a princess named Shiloh. She lived in a kingdom, not far from yours, in a grand house with a swimming pool and fourteen floors. I know that sounds too big but here’s the thing: her mother and father were the Queen and King. Every princess in the kingdom could sing. Yet Shiloh’s voice could do no such thing. One day, Shiloh heard visiting princes make beats on their hands and chest, they were battling to see who could rap best. Their rhymes sounded good enough, but Shiloh could think of better stuff. Suddenly Shiloh wasn’t so shy. She wanted to rap, she wanted to try. @hannahstories_ #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #therappingprincess #blackchildrensauthors #hannahlee #rappingprincess #rapping #blackfemalerappers #blackprincess #womenshistorymonth #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators

She didn’t really care for okra, greens, sweet potatoes, or carrots. Sue really didn’t care for vegetables at all. Instead she often chose recipes that didn’t include them. One morning on the way to school, one of Sue’s friends noticed a flyer on a telephone pole. It was for a Cultural Cook Off. This year’s theme is “Very Vegetarian”. Happy Fri’yay! It’s feel them on the first! I notice my girls watch me, and one thing I want to model for them is to care for their health and overall well-being. I check my breasts daily (that’s just me), and I encourage you to check yourself monthly. Checking yourself monthly can change and help save your life. 💕 #1 CHECK your breast and surrounding tissue, RECALL what you felt last month, and finally, RECORD your findings. 💕 #2 If you discover any changes, call your doctor. -Lump, hard knot, or thickening inside the breast or underarm area -Swelling, warmth, redness, or darkening of the breast -Change in the size or shape of the breast -Dimpling or puckering of the skin -Itchy, scaly, sore, or rash on the nipple -Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast -Nipple discharge ( or smells) that starts suddenly -New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away If you have questions or identify any changes, contact your doctor. 💕 #3 Schedule your mammogram for 2024! #thebigdiscoverybook #letsstarttheconversation #breastcancer #cancerawareness #kidsbooks #childrensbooks #childrensauthor #thebigdiscoverybook #thebigdiscovery #blackchildrensbooks #blackchildrensauthors and #blackchildrensauthor #breastcancerbook #childrensbookauthor #childrensbooks #cancerbooksforchildren #blackbreastcancer #breastcancersurvivor🎀 #tnbcsurvivor #breastcancerjourney #breastcancerprevention #breastcancerdiagnosis #ParentingWithCancer #MomsWithCancer #DadsWithCancer #feelitonthefirst #feelthemonthefirst

Lunch Ladies Changing Lives: It’s Crunch Time By: Vincent Sturgis This book is a great resource for National Nutrition Month. Miss Alma and Miss Dollie are two very special lunch ladies. Every morning they carefully prepare delicious and healthy meals for all the kids at school. One day they see three new little girls in the cafeteria named Olivia, Aiyana, and Sloane. Miss Alma and Miss Dollie notice the girls only eat a few pieces of fruits and vegetables, and then throw their food away. They decide to have a conversation with the girls. Miss Alma and Miss Dollie come up with a creative and exciting way to get the girls to try new foods. @authorvsturgis #blackteacherandbooks #blackchildrensbooks #childrensbooks #blackchildrensauthors #vincentsturgis #lunchladies #schoollunch #schoollunches #schoolcafeteria #nationalnutritionmonth #blackchefs #mrcarrot #blackteachers #blackeducators #teachers #educators
