***LONG POST ALERT 🚨: I saw a post not too long ago where someone was talking about how Snapchat can play such a huge role in body dysmorphia. It talked about how we look for the perfect filter that makes our skin look flawless and gives us that "perfect" look. I had to really sit with that and I also read through the comments and saw the many different opinions of others as well....... Then it came to me, I am that girl. The one trying to find the perfect angle, the best filter, trying to look "perfect". Then I remembered something @rich_red_witch said and it was along the lines of getting used to taking pictures of yourself and letting go of the filters and embracing our natural beauty without the filters all the time. I went through my camera roll and realized I had barely ANY pictures of myself in my phone without some sort of filter on it...... I took this picture on Thanksgiving a few years ago and for the longest, before I got this shot, I was struggling so hard with getting the picture I wanted. So many times I felt tempted to just go to Snapchat and find a filter that would make it all so much easier......but I didn't! I love being a WIFE (see post from yesterday for more identity musings) Oh yes, the little rebellious, cynical, feminist parts of me still taunt me a little telling me I am a fraud and I’m abandoning them with my love of wifehood; and poly-portland has made me feel like a normie monogamist…and dammit I do not want to be normal But you know what? Resisting for the sake of resisting is just as much of a cage as blindly following the rules. (Thanks Glennon Doyle for this reminder.) And the truth is, I love being a wife. That does not mean wifehood and monogamy is right for everyone. It’s not. But this new phase of MY life feels like… Queendom... In that queendom, unity… In that unity, stability… In that stability, freedom. With the support of my person who…has my back always, holds me when I cry, dances and laughs with me, challenges me, teaches me, and loves me…all of me… All of the messy, wild, childish, insecure, selfish parts of me… I am able to step more into myself. Which is what this new phase of my life feels like: a re-embodiment, a literal stepping back into myself. As if I had been walking around separate from myself, and now I am reuniting with me. Me uniting with me, and me uniting with Evan is powerful…no more disparate entities running around grasping for…for what? This photo popped up. I wasn’t going to share it because it was before I buzzed my hair… It’s as if I was thinking my buzzed hair defines me… And it got me thinking…who am I? I am me It’s quite a lonely thing to be For I am the only one who can ever be me And I am not quite sure who is me… I start to define myself in relation to others Wife. But surely I was me before I was married Sister. I would still be a version of me even if I didn't have a brother Daughter. I’m not sure about this one. I would not be here if I was not brought into this world by my parents, but I suppose that doesn't mean I must always be a daughter; and I’m certainly not only a daughter Maybe then, I am a writer? A mentor? A hiker? I do these things, but I’m not sure I am these things. Maybe I am a female? But if I had my ovaries and uterus and fallopian tubes removed, would I still be a female? Perhaps I am my body? Or do I have a body? I think I am a body… I am my fingers, my toes, c*itoris But my fingers, toes and c*itoris could be cut off and still I’d be me. And there is a me that would feel the pain. Is there any part of me that I could remove that would result in me no longer being me? My brain? Without my brain I would not be me But would I be me if I was just a brain in a vat? Am I merely the bundle of my thoughts and perceptions as Hume would suggest? Hmm I know there are these parts of me: there’s the quiet me, the wild me, the insecure me, the confident me… So who then is observing each of these parts? Who is able to distinguish between these different parts…that all make up a single whole? Does a tree wonder who it is? I don't think so. Yet the tree is still a tree. I’m not sure I will ever be able to answer the question “who am I?” But it is liberating to remember that many of the things I think I am, are simply expressions of me… And I, and you, can play with those expressions Find the ones that feel good.
