A reference photo can be a crutch - there’s a tendency to focus on detail and replicate. But for me, the camera has always offered a different way to see what’s become familiar. I carried my 35mm on a couple of hikes this past weekend and encouraged (forced!) myself to capture different views. The light felt flat, the images on the back of my camera felt uninspiring. At 5,000 feet, we were still in the middle of stick season - everything felt a bit grey. On Tuesday, I downloaded the images and started to play in Photoshop. I heightened the saturation and vibrancy and drew out the color. I cropped familiar compositions and created new focal points. These images provide direction and an exploration of color that feels fresh to me. If I’m quiet the next 6 weeks on IG, it’s because I’m wrestling with these new ideas. Peak bagging along the crest of the Kettle Range in some cold, windy, highly variable weather. It snowed, hailed and blew in some seriously apocalyptic looking storm clouds with little hints of sunshine thrown in for good measure. There was even a forest fire in the distance. Pic 1: Bald Mountain with a beam of sun breaking through the clouds. Definite mood. Pic 2: The impressive east face of Snow Peak. Pic 3: Frozen pond. Pic 5: Sun dog. For those who don’t know, sun dogs are halos created by the refraction of light through snow crystals in the atmosphere. This may have been the most well-defined sun dog I’ve ever seen. I moved out here because I really love hiking. Winter is not great for hiking but I found the next best things, or maybe even a better thing? I got into skinning this winter. Skinning is when you put little carpets on the bottom of your skis so you can go uphill without sliding back down. I use a split board which is two skis that can latch together to ride like a snowboard on the way down. Imagine not having to hike down after a big hike and just snowboarding instead. It is amazing.
