Within the tradition of #asogwe #vodou there are three ranks of initiation. The first is #hounsi. These initiates are members of a #sosyete, but not priests. They assist with setting up all the various decorations and items used at a Fèt, serve as a sort of choir, clean up after the celebrations, and generally serve as the main body of the congregation. Generally speaking, there should be more hounsi in a sosyete than anything else. The second rank is houngan / mambo #soupwen, meaning "on the point" (of their chief spirit). These initiates are priest/esses, but have "borrowed" the #asson, which is to say they cannot make new initiates. They perform a variety of spiritual functions both inside the Sosyete and for clients. The third rank is houngan / mambo #asogwe. Like sou pwen these are priest/esses but "own" the asson, having recieved it from #PapaLoko, meaning they can initiate others, found houses, and so on. A healthy Sosyete should have more sou pwen than asogwe, and more hounsi than sou pwen. Too many cooks spoil the tchaka! However all three levels are required for a healthy Sosyete in the same way a river needs both banks and a bed to flow. While human nature plays with hierarchy in these matters its better to view it as the higher the rank, the more the responsibility and the less freedom there truly is. One can dream, but egos are gonna ego. When it comes to sou pwen my personal feeling is that they're, in a real way, specialists in the work and nature of their met tet--like medical specialists, compared to the Asogwe general practitioners who need to, by nature of their role, be generalists. This three tiered system was, in whole or in part, inspired by that of blue lodge Freemasonry, which also inspired the degree system of Gardnerian and Alexandria Wicca, the Golden Dawn, and so on. Simultaneously, we are in the womb of Manbo Ayizan Velekete, the sacred mother, who gives us life. We are reborn, purified, and gifted with breath, light and konesans – an internal power! The ceremony was in full swing. Drums blazing, hot & sweaty figures embodying sacred movement, sensory overload on 10! Danbala was next in line for salutation. What is true is that, there are tests given to assess ones capabilities while in the Djevo. You better act like you learned a lil’ something, and come correct! I watched Manbo Bonita make her way through a massive crowd, towards my direction. When we locked eyes, I knew she was coming for me. When she signaled with the Asson, my test had officially begun. My stomach sank. Damn. It’s now or never. I had to put on my Kanzo big girl panties and salute while the entire congregation watched every move. Why the anxiety? When we salute Lwa in ceremony, we are essentially inviting them to the party. The Asson speaks and shifts energy. Priests ritually acknowledge the temple, drums, spirit rooms, initiated clergy and the Poto Mitan, where all blessings flow. A gesture of great importance, I wanted to make sure I did it to the best of my ability. Papa Danbala was the first lwa I ceremoniously saluted as Manbo Asogwe. Although clear in my role prior, as Manbo Sou Pwen, I often questioned why THAT specific spirit after this level of initiation.
