A short time ago members of 299 Parachute Squadron deployed to Cyprus on peacekeeping duties as a part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), in support of 4 PARA. The main role of UNFICYP is to maintain the integrity of the buffer zone between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The force was founded in 1964 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 186 to prevent a reoccurrence of violence between the two groups. Last week Cpl C from 299 Para Sqn obtained his 'E' qual along with a cohort of regular counterparts from 70 Gurkha Para Sqn / 51 Parachute Sqn and 3 Para. The course teaches soldiers how to safely supervise Live Fire Tactical Training (LFTT) under different conditions and circumstances, including: - Section attacks - Night firing (with and without illumination) - GPMG overhead fire 299 Para Sqn continually train and better their reservists so that they can maintain effectiveness as a part of their Squadron and the wider British Army. Today, 24 November, is a sad day for the sappers of the 1st Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers (formerly the 1st Air Troop RE). Nearly half of the sappers from the Raid de Bruneval died on this day in 1942 during the Battle of Gue Hill in Tunisia. A year ago, we launched an appeal for donations to design this commemorative plaque as a tribute to the 'Dismantling Party' of Operation Biting. November 24th is a bloody day for the 1st Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers. It lost 18 of its men in the battle of Gue Hill in Tunisia, 80 years ago to the day. Among them were four veteran sappers of the Bruneval Raid: Lance-Corporal Elgar F. HARRIS, Lance-Corporal Francis W. HORNSBY, Lance-Corporal Norman T. MANNING and Sapper Victor J. MITCHELL. Nearly half of the sapper detachment attached to 'C' Company of the 2nd Parachute Battalion, on the night of 27-28 February 1942, died on 24th November 1942 due to the explosion of the Hawkins mines they were carrying. Formed on 3rd November 1941, the 1st Air Troop RE was composed of about thirty sappers. It was the first parachute unit of the Royal Engineers. On 23rd January 1942, Lieutenant Charles D.H. VERNON took a detachment of sappers to Tilshead to be attached to 'C' company. This detachment underwent the same training as the paratroopers of the 2nd Para Bn with an additional skills of radar dismantling in order to assist Flight-Sergeant Charles W.H. COX (RAF) during operation 'Biting'. The sapper detachment suffered no casualties, only Lance Corporal R. HEARD was wounded in the hand during the raid. On 31st March 1942, the 1st Air Troop RE became the 1st Parachute Squadron RE with its new recruits who had swelled its ranks. Here is a nicely used Royal Engineers Airborne officer’s maroon beret which had a new cap badge added not so long ago. In many British army units, it is customary for officers and some WO1's to don a distinct embroidered cap badge. This unique cap badge serves as a visual identifier that the wearer is a commissioned officer, and it is consistently of superior quality compared to those worn by other ranks. The tradition of officers wearing cloth embroidered cap badges has a long history. However, in numerous Infantry units, all ranks wear the same type of cap badge, irrespective of their rank. This practice reflects a sense of equality among the ranks. When the Royal Engineers were formed in 1716 they were all officers. The Royal Sappers and Miners comprised SNCOs and other ranks. In 1856 the two were amalgamated to form the Corps of Royal Engineers. To commerate the joining of the two Corps, the officers and sappers have different beret badges. The officers have gold wire embroidered nine flamed grenade badge with the Corps motto, Ubique, and the other ranks have the Corps’ cap badge. It was used as the tactical recognition flash for 36 Engineer Regiment, 5 Airborne Brigade as well, the parent unit of 9 Para Sqn RE. It also became the DZ Flash for 51 Parachute Squadron RE. On this day 80 years ago, the veterans of the Bruneval Raid from the 2nd Parachute Battalion and the 1st Parachute Squadron RE jumped to Sicily to storm the Primosole bridge during Operation Fustian with the 1st Parachute Brigade. German flak fire was so heavy that it disrupted the drops. Of the 405 men of the 2nd Para Bn, only 170 landed on the correct drop zone. Nearly half of the sapper detachment attached to 'C' Company of the 2nd Parachute Battalion, on the night of 27-28 February 1942, died on 24th November 1942 due to the explosion of the Hawkins mines they were carrying. Formed on 3rd November 1941, the 1st Air Troop RE was composed of about thirty sappers. It was the first parachute unit of the Royal Engineers. On 23rd January 1942, Lieutenant Charles D.H. VERNON took a detachment of sappers to Tilshead to be attached to 'C' company. This detachment underwent the same training as the paratroopers of the 2nd Para Bn with an additional skills of radar dismantling in order to assist Flight-Sergeant Charles W.H. COX (RAF) during operation 'Biting'. The sapper detachment suffered no casualties, only Lance Corporal R. HEARD was wounded in the hand during the raid. On 31st March 1942, the 1st Air Troop RE became the 1st Parachute Squadron RE with its new recruits who had swelled its ranks. St Mary & The Holy Rood Church in Donington, Lincolnshire, pays tribute to this unit with this commemorative plaque recalling their battle honours, including the Bruneval Raid. 🇲🇦 I have been asked by a few people now, what is the most sigificant thing I will take away from the MdS experience? And although the vast and beautiful desert and all her challenges were significant, by far the most profound thing I have taken away from this experience has been the friendships forged in our humble bivouac shelter, number 110. 🆎 If you look at this image closely, you may notice the Pegasus of @16airassaultbrigade fluttering on the edge of our bivouac. Although 50% no longer serving, by coincidence all members of the tent shared a background in the Airborne Forces, which combined with the shared challenge of the @marathondessables made for an indomitable team. 🍻We get by with help from our friends, and I cannot claim to have conquered MdS alone. Pulling barbs from feet and trainers, treating eachother’s blisters, sharing morsels of food we had all saved for our lowest points, and endlessly talking the most enjoyable nonsense were all the real highlights of this experience for me. This challenge would have been infinitely harder alone. So to the men of Bivouac 110 - thank you! I would do this challenge or go with you all anywhere. Day 4 - Checkpoint 1 - The ‘Double Day’ ☀️ One of my favourite things about MdS was carelessly running down the reverse slopes of jebels and large sand dunes. 🏜Although beautiful, the landscape is somewhat endless. Travelling at the same speed over repetitive terrain such as dried lakes and salt flakes makes for many monotonous hours during MdS. But, slopes like these provide a break, with a little adrenline and excitement to punctuate the days! 🐪 I probably should have put the camera away and focused on the scamble, but I wanted to film so I could share this highlight with you all for when I got home. Two weeks ago today, we parted with our things except for what we could carry ourselves for a week, and at last got ready to run the first stage of the @marathondessables the following morning! 🏅🏅🏅All three of the Sandy Sappers would finish in the top 200, among the elite category of finishers. Tom’s father Nige also took part, and aged 59 completed the 250km event. An outstanding achievement! Our tent mate @iamjonnymh also became the first person ever to complete the MdS in body armour. 💸 Even more outstanding, the combined donations of all who have followed the Sandy Sappers now total £10,000 for @walkingwiththewounded and will go on to support their important work with UK veterans. Some years ago, this original set of operational orders for the operation 'Biting' was sold. It belonged to the Major Peter E. Bromley-Martin, the liaison officer of the Major-General Frederick A.M. Browning. He was heavily involved in the training and the equipment's supply of the Bruneval raid. January 1942, he said himself to the Major John D. Frost: "You'll be taking your company over to France before February is out [the day of the operation was not yet known]. The #operationbiting memorial panel in the #thruxton airfield: "To assist the conduct of allied air operations over German occupied Europe, it was essential to gain access to electronic secrets of the German radar, code named 'Freya' one of these radar stations was located at #bruneval , near Le Havre, northern France. On the night of the 27th February, 1942 one hundred and nineteen men from 'B' and 'C' Companies, 2nd Battalion, #parachuteregiment including Flight-Sergeant E.W.F. Cox and Captain D. Vernon, #royalengineers , commanded by Major John Frost, boarded twelve #raf Whitley bombers and departed #thruxtonairfield to drop by #parachute and attack the radar station at Bruneval. Flg. Sgt. Cox and Captain Vernon would remove key components from the radar and return with them to England for further investigation. Despite the confusion attendant upon a night parachute drop and determined German resistance, the attack was a complete success. The human cost was two parachute soldiers killed, six wounded and six missing.
