Why am I sharing this? ๐ธMore awareness needs to be rasied ๐ธWe are often misdiagnosed ๐ธWe feel strange and deep down know something just isn't right ๐ธLeft undiagnosed, our mental health suffers ๐ธSelf-diagnosis is equally important ๐ธDon't stop investigating, you know yourself best ๐ธEven when we know, we still have to work on it If I had just accepted that it was anxiety, I would have felt so misunderstood, low and felt strange my entire life. ๐ On reflection, a lot of what I was describing was RSD But even though I was diagnosed 2 and a half years ago, I am still learning about myself and need to put measures in place each day... Am I the happiest I've ever been? My favorite one is โmake eye contact when giving instructionsโ. This sounds so simple yet makes a HUGE difference. I can remember so many times getting in trouble for not following instructions that were given to me as a child when my attention was somewhere else. Parents with children that have ADHD: I canโt stress enough how important it is to call your childโs name and get them to look you in the eyes when giving instructions. And the MOST EFFECTIVE way to assure you were heard, is to ASK THEM TO REPEAT what you said. Not with a condescending tone, but with gentle authority). This is a way that YOU can help your child to succeed. One more piece of advice I have from my personal experience as a child) is: when you ask them to repeat what you said, there will be times where they will incorrectly repeat back what they heard. Try not to respond with an irritated sigh or rolled eyes. Just kindly correct wrong information. This exercise also teaches your child to look people in the eyes and practice listening when people talk in life. I have to add that some children can listen best while โdoingโ another task with their hands. In that case, this tip may not be the best for them. For example, one might hear you the best while drawing. Hey there! I was diagnosed with ADHD last year. The relief was huge. Finally I made sense to myself and in part it explained my behaviour, reactions and emotions. I have always done lots to manage myself without knowing why I didnโt seem to operate in the same way as colleagues and friends. The last few years have been near impossible. Menopause and grief had exacerbated my symptoms to the point where I couldnโt hold a thought in my head. Itโs been hell. Today I start my medication journey and I am trying not to have too high an expectation about the results. The struggle is real๐ตโ๐ซ! For ADHDers, we can often experience the overwhelming wave and panic taking over, so what can we do to help reduce the mental load and make it all feel waaaay LESS daunting??! Corey Whelan from @healthline suggests: โ1. Set a deadline Even if there isnโt a specific one for your task. You can use the due date on bills, for example, as a deadline for paying them. 2. Donโt multitask Streamline your workload by doing one thing at a time rather than tackling multiple tasks simultaneously. 3. Use lists Make a list of each dayโs workload and responsibilities by the hour, including an allotted timeframe for each. Time management and list apps can be helpful for structuring your dayโs activities. 4. Be realistic about time Estimate the amount of time each project needs. For example, if 3 hours is realistic, donโt set yourself up for failure by trying to do it in less time. 5. Break up large projects Write out the tasks required for each job and tackle them as individual projects with deadlines. 6. Build in physical activity Take breaks for walking, stretching, or exercising. This will refresh your mind and give you an outlet for your energy. 7. On 24th September 2022 I started reading this book. Oh. My. God. I had, for a while, suspected I may have ADHD. Just a third of the way in to the book, I had nodded at almost every line, had SO many light bulb moments and a few tears, that I was left in no doubt. Just two months later, I had my diagnosis (and, although it couldn't be diagnosed at that assessment, it was strongly recommended I be assessed for autism too). Since I was diagnosed with ADHD, I've found I'm working with more and more ND clients. One person even 'came out' to me - only her partner knew up to that point! I'm loving that my openness about my own ADHD diagnosis seems to be drawing others to work with me. They can appreciate the superpowers that neurodivergence can bring, such as my ability to hyperfocus on a project and complete a crazy amount of work in one day on my GET (SH)IT DONE! Days! It's also nice that we kinda 'get' each other, when often neurotypicals just don't!๐ I'd love to know the stats for how many entrepreneurs are neurodivergent in some way - perhaps with ADHD, autism, or even both.
