Born #OnThisDay in 1817, Henry David Thoreau was the third child of John and Cynthia Thoreau. Born at Thoreau Farm, his grandmother's home on Virginia Road, Thoreau lived in Concord most of his life, passing away in 1862 at the age of 44. Thoreau was a writer, naturalist, teacher and philosopher best known for his works “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience.” He strongly believed that one should live simply, independently and wisely. He counted among his friends Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathanial Hawthorne, and Louisa May Alcott. Curious about Thoreau and his life? The Concord Museum has a large collection of Henry David Thoreau objects, including the desk at which he wrote “Walden,” his bed and chair, his flute, snowshoes, walking stick and much more. Have you ever taken a closer look at the Henry David Thoreau’a Concord print @revolutionaryconcord ? There’s a house referred as Thoreau’s Texas House. From our quick research the Thoreau family lived at a combined house and shop on Texas Street. It is now known as Belknap Street. They lived there from 1843–1850. There are two reasons for referring to it as the Texas House. First, Texas was in the news between 1843-1850. From the annexation and induction of Texas into the United States in 1845 and the Mexican-American War. Second, Texas Street was considered on the outskirts of Concord. Some jokingly said it was so far from the center of the village it might as well have been in Texas. Ed Markey, and others—including Gaining Ground Executive Director Jennifer Johnson. Happy Spring! 🍃 On Saturday I gave a poetry reading @thoreaufarm in Concord, MA. This is the birthplace of Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), American naturalist, author, and philosopher. I opened the talk with a new poem about a seed pod from the Northern Catalpa Tree on the Thoreau Farm property. A few people asked if I could share it, so here it is: Catalpa Tree Pod of Thoreau Farm I needn’t know your origin to admire your lanky form soft curves, long lines chestnut-colored casing hiding feathery seeds within. You arrived in a box of winter mystery – stark sticks, dried blooms a twig dressed with a lone crimson berry – wrapped in bleached tissue then shipped, from wise and historic Concord to wild and raucous Vegas. Where I live in the Mojave, home to prickly pear and barrel cactus, I needn’t know your name, your place, or your New England neighbors to marvel in the mystery of your shape, as if the legs of a prima ballerina, the fangs of a saber tooth tiger, or a moray eel lurking in coral. But still, I wonder. So I ask, I explore, I learn you once hung from a welcoming yet messy Catalpa tree planted outside a farmhouse kitchen seventy years ago to mark the birth of a daughter, its branches heavy with heart-shaped leaves and white-belled blossoms befriended by hummingbirds. Journal Entry, December 5, 1856: My themes shall not be far-fetched. I will tell of homely every-day phenomena and adventures. Friends! Society! It seems to be that I have an abundance of it, there is so much that I rejoice and sympathize with, and men, too, that I never speak to but only know and think of. What you call bareness and poverty is to me simplicity. God could not be unkind to me if he should try. I love the winter, with its imprisonment and its cold, for it compels the prisoner to try new fields and resources. I love to have the river closed up for a season and a pause put to my boating, to be obliged to get my boat in. I shall launch it again in the spring with so much more pleasure. This is an advantage in point of abstinence and moderation compared with the seaside boating, where the boat ever lies on the shore. I love best to have each thing in its season only, and enjoy doing without it at all other times. It is the greatest of all advantages to enjoy no advantage at all. I find it invariably true, the poorer I am, the richer I am. What you consider my disadvantage, I consider my advantage. While you are pleased to get knowledge and culture in many ways, I am delighted to think that I am getting rid of them. Thoreau Farm (circa 1730), the birthplace of author Henry David Thoreau in 1817 🍁 🏠Who is Thoreau? (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. A leading transcendentalist, he is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience", an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. 🏠House history From thoreaufarm.org: The house and surrounding farmland already had a long history before Thoreau’s birth there in 1817. Native Americans cultivated the land until the town of Concord was chartered in 1635. Among the early settlers was Sgt. Thomas Wheeler who acquired substantial portions of acreage in the first and second divisions of land. Thomas settled large farms upon two of his sons, John and Timothy, along what would later become known as Virginia Road. John developed his property into a fairly prosperous farm and around 1730 built the farmhouse that stands to this day. In 1756, the house and farm were sold to John Wheeler’s cousin, Deacon Samuel Minot, who conveyed the property to his son, Jonas. Jonas expanded the farm to nearly 104 acres —one of the largest in Concord at that time. 🏠Saving the house In 1995 a campaign was launched to save the house and land from development. Through the efforts of a public-private task force, money was raised to ensure that the Thoreau birth house would be preserved and used for the public good. I'm so excited to announce the official book launch for SOLID SEASONS: THE FRIENDSHIP OF HENRY DAVID THOREAU AND RALPH WALDO EMERSON which will be published by Counterpoint Press on April 9th.⁣ ⁣ I read John Lehmann’s Three Literary Friendships in 1984. It explores the relationships of Byron and Shelley, Rimbaud and Verlaine, and, the reason I bought the book at the time, Robert Frost and Edward Thomas. Literary friendships have always intrigued me. Public lives as expressed through their shared writings give us one portrait; personal lives through their private writings give another. The questions for me are how may the two be reconciled, and how does the theme of friendship inform their writings?⁣ ⁣ It was essential to find the truth of their friendship and not simply present the “same old vein or crust” (as Emerson said) by relying on myths that have been perpetuated or stories that have remained incomplete because they appeared more dramatic that way. In order to do that, I did not rely on any story told in previous biographies or critical works. I wanted to wait until October to visit the sites pertaining to the last member of the "Concord Quartet," Henry David Thoreau. I figure it's only right to celebrate him during New England's glorious foliage season. Well, that's my excuse anyway. 🍂 Thoreau was born at this farm on July 12, 1817, so this year marks the bicentennial of his birth. And how fitting a time to remember this champion of simple, intentional living, of civil disobedience, of revering the natural beauty around us.
