So magic to meet up with my cousin @kellytraillmcdaniel and James for a catch up in the beautiful wet moody streets of Sydney’s stunning Chiman town Precinct. So wonderful to chat h up on all the news and their amazing life in Oz… The smell in China Town is just intoxicatingly and the colours of the neon reflecting I. The wet streets … so magical … it was a Monday night but even so there where cues outside restaurants and we struggled to find a spot to sit in the noodle bar. Throughout Oz I was so heartened to see how supported the city’s restaurants and coffee shops are … public transport is super cheap … in Melbourne free on trams. This means everyone really uses the cities and things quieten down around 10/11pm. What a fabulous r #paintingworkshop we had on my last day in Melbourne in Aliza’s beautiful home filled with the aroma of baking bead , toasting cheese and Heavenly soup ! It was the culmination of a #creativelockin that Aliza and I had for a few days before… not leaving the house and just letting ourselves paint, draw, sing and cook for a few days. Just like when we were studying together we hit the zome and both created many fab paintings in Aliza’s super studio … I’d felt so blown away by my time in NZ and wanted to proses stuff in paint ( I didn’t get to paint a long the way as I’d hoped ) it was just super having everyone over for an epic art day and super healthy feast. To think of the courage of the early immigrants to New Zealand, the crazy danger just getting here by sea. The best thing about USIU-A was the no Friday class decree. Students had a variety of ways to use the day wisely - some got rat-arsed on Thursday night at Chocolate City. Others participated in sports or social club activities. For me, I'd rent out movies from the video library and spend the whole day binge watching #VHS. And that's how I stumbled across The End of the Affair. When I decided to direct my first play, I scoured through the library of scripts at the Phoenix Players theatre, and to my astonishment, I found The End of the Affair. It was meant to be! It had to be done! It was an abstract script and a rather complex set. Furthermore, I took the lead role as Bendrix, as well as directing the play. Believing I had bitten more than I could chew and on the verge of regret, we were invited for a meet and greet with a #Hollywood A-lister that was preparing to film a blockbuster in #Kenya. Who was it - #RalphFiennes. Him that played Bendrix in the movie. It was the year 2004 and #TheConstantGardener was scheduled to shoot in a month. And our play was to be staged in a week. Here we all were, in a conference room at the #SerenaHotel with Ralph Fiennes. I raised my hand, welcomed him to Nairobi and introduced my cast. I proceeded to ask him about playing Bendrix as we skipped rehearsals to meet him. He almost leaped from his seat at the fact that there was a theatre adaptation of the book. We began a back-and-forth conversation that culminated with his requesting to attend a rehearsal. I dismissed it, posthaste, as banter and politeness - until I received a call from Blue Sky, a few days later, asking for our rehearsal location. And Ralph Fiennes showed up. Instinctively took over the rehearsal - which I didn't mind, I am quite secure with my talent. It was great and he shared helpful tips, which galvanised the cast and we had a fantastic show. People doubt me when I narrate this story...I bloody would too. I classify it as one of the many incidents, that I've experienced, where predetermined destiny perfectly aligned. I found the poster, that I designed 20 years ago. It's a tad weathered, but the memories and synchronicity remain spotless.

Whenever I catch sight of these showy, pyramid-like clusters of orange-red and scarlet Pagoda Flowers (Clerodendrum paniculatum) in my neighbor’s garden, I’m tempted to get one too to add a splash of colour into my predominantly foliage-filled garden. Not only do these striking flowers serve as a magnet for butterflies seeking nectar, they also add a delightful aesthetic appeal. While I had a couple of these semiwoody shrubs many years ago, they struggled to thrive or bloom freely when my garden became shadier due to the spreading tree canopy. This shrub can reach heights of up to 1.5m and requires bright light and regular pruning. Oh my heart ! … all I can say is that I never imagined that Candice and I would get to finally spend quality time together in her magical NewZealand nest … @brookbay_blooms … I’d thought it seemed so much to visit OZ and NZ at once and struggled to find her, but the forces of the universe had a plan that we needed to hang out ! After years of her helping me from afar with my passport applications, long chats about immigration over covid and hearing all about the beautiful homes they were building, I finally got to see everything and really spent such special in person time catching up! I’m eternaly grateful for this and so glad we got to hang out before her big move to OZ.
