All dogs are good dogs, but the best dogs are the ones who help to protect the endangered piping plover! Did you know that our furry companions could be seen as a terrifying predator? Especially if you are a small nesting shorebird! They can disrupt breeding behavior and their presence can (directly or indirectly) lead to the loss of eggs, chicks, and adults. If pets get too close to plover nests, the plovers will react by abandoning the nest or even leave the area entirely to find safer breeding grounds. There is strong evidence that show the devastating effect that pets can have on piping plovers. The Great Lakes Piping Plover is protected by the Endangered Species Act. In 1986, the population hit a low of 17 breeding pairs. In 2023, that number rose to 80! This success is due to monitoring and habitat protection projects that have occurred over the decades. Now, around half of the entire breeding population nests at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore. You and your furry companion can help to protect the piping plover by following all signs for beach closures. Maps and signs that show where leashed pets are allowed can be found throughout the park and on the park website. Remember to always double check that the beach will allow pets! If you bring your pet to the park, remember to follow the principles of B.A.R.K.: Bag pet waste Always on leash: pets must be on a leash (six feet in length max) and under control at all times Respect wildlife: keep pets away from wildlife Know where you can go: know which areas are open and closed to pets, obey posted signs At the Lakeshore, there are also volunteer BARK Rangers. These volunteers and their dogs work to educate visitors on where dogs are allowed and why some beaches are off limits to pets. Picture this: nine people come together to a ranch style home in long lake township. A white porch greets you as you pull in, and the old red pickup truck parked in the woods welcomes you home. Lip gloss by Lil Mama plays on the kids radio while children run up and down the halls. Someone is always either pissed off, way too tired or short fused. We laugh and cry and find respite driving out to the dunes. The lake calls us out each morning and the woods behind the house call us home. Sleeping Bear Dunes… you were challenging but so beautiful. I didn’t make it all the way to Lake Michigan, but I did do the 284 foot dune climb to see Glen Lake. We were still about 3 dunes away. One day I will make it to Lake Michigan, but I am so proud of myself for what I did do. Like Andrew said, I couldn’t even do this years ago and look at me now. And yes Andrew is a crazy man for running down it, but he makes it look easy. Weekendje weg Op 27 mei was het Memorial Day in USA. Daardoor waren Hamoen en Mila vrij en was er de mogelijkheid om een paar nachtjes weg te gaan. We besloten om naar Traverse City te gaan, kleine 4 uur rijden richting het noorden in Michigan. Nog best een lastige beslissing als je ineens zoveel interessante plekken te bezoeken hebt vanuit je nieuwe woonplek! We zijn verrast door de mooie natuur rondom de meren, oa Lake Michigan, en het park Sleeping Bear Dunes. Daarnaast was ik verrast over de mooie wegen. De grote auto's met nog grotere caravans eraan. De hoeveelheid suiker in een 'normaal' Amerikaans ontbijt. Dat er wijngaarden zijn rondom Traverse City. Hoe 'zuidelijk' we zitten tov Nederland (dat was te merken aan de intensiteit van de zon). Er zijn veel dingen die me hier blijven verbazen en waar ik me door laat verassen. Foto 1 genieten van de zon bij #littlefleet in #traversecity. Foodtrucks en lekkere biertjes. Much needed weekend away to Traverse City and spent some time hiking the dunes at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore! Did a 5 mile trail, then the slightly intimidating 450ft overlook climb which is pretty intense 😃 Also, if you’re ever in TC, get dinner at Trattoria Stella. I went for the first time 5-6 years ago and it’s still just as good. Great service, food and experience! The photo that started it all. This is the very first photo I took of the Milky Way core, something I tired to do the night before but was aiming at the wrong end of it. This is the first successful one I took. I went to Empire, MI to take a photo of the sunset that day, over Lake Michigan across the Sleeping Bear Dunes. After an extensive hike and a wonderful sunset, I made my way back down for some shots of the sky. Summer Artisan Art & Wine Walk Friday, June 21, 2024 The Annual Suttons Bay Summer Kickoff Art & Wine Walk on Friday, June 21, 2024 from 5-8 PM is the kickoff to the summer season and your chance to visit participating shops, meet award-winning local artists, and sample Leelanau County Wines. A walking guide is created which includes the name of the participating merchants along with the artist they are hosting and a winery if they so choose to sponsor one. In the famous words of Douglas Adams: “Don’t Panic!” If you want to look up and see the night sky, Sleeping Bear Dunes is the perfect place to do that! After all, half the park is after dark. You may not see a restaurant at the end of the universe, you’ll at least be able to see the beautiful dark sky. Because space is big, really big, and that means there is so much to look at! It can take over 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark, so be ready to spend quite a bit of time outside and looking up. If you plan on coming to see the night sky, remember to: Bring your park pass. Pack an extra light. Don’t rely on only your phone flashlight! Dress in layers or bring an extra layer. Leave No Trace. Pack out everything that you bring with you. Pack a towel if you so desire (Especially if you’re Arthur Dent). And don’t forget your copy of “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy." I would like to personally thank Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish for providing the sound track to my summer. Whew! Three extraordinary artists and albums- IMO. What a time for women in music. Finally. Finally. What is less than extraordinary is seeing some people pitting these fabulous women against each other. They are friends. They show up for each other, lift each other up. It’s beautiful. Yet being raised in a country where the ERA still has not passed, where women couldn’t have a mortgage or credit card in their own name without a man signing off until a year after I was born- well that produces some internalized misogyny. A idea we only get one or two seats at the table so game on. And no, no, game not on. There is room for everyone. When women rise they bring others with them. And listen these women don’t need the likes of me to defend them. But women do. Misogyny requires I do if I hope that things might one day be different- and I do. Internalized misogyny is tricky because by definition we can’t see it until it’s pointed out and we undo it. You don’t have to like these women I mentioned. You can like what you please😉 but casual misogyny can not stand. If you find yourself cutting down one woman in order to elevate another, discussing how they look, or thinking they should smile more- it’s you, you’re the problem it’s you. If you hear it- call it out with kindness- it’s misogyny. Like there isn’t enough room at the table and let me tell you, the three women I happened to mention are building bigger tables. “Cat fights” as they grossly called it in my generation are out. Rising up together is in. Building bigger tables is in. Respect is in. I’ve seen way too much stirring, up drama that these women themselves did not stir up and it saddens me. Good talk.
