The consequences are serious – exclusionary discipline for minor offenses in these early grades pushes children out of the classroom at an essential time when they are building their educational foundation, worsening academic disparities and fueling the school-to-prison pipeline. It's also tied to Massachusetts’ current literacy crisis, in which thousands of students are reaching the end of 3rd grade without the reading skills they need. As @cfjjma’s Executive Director Leon Smith puts it, this is “the recipe for a future dropout crisis.” We’re working alongside CFJJ, @massadvocates, and other educational justice partners to ban suspensions for Massachusetts’ youngest students. Our own research found that children with a disability, special educational need or additional need are routinely illegally excluded from school. Almost a quarter (22 percent) of those are illegally excluded every week. This is having a devastating impact on their education and mental health. Half of parents report they are unable to work due to the impact of illegal exclusions on family life. A child can only be legally excluded from school for disciplinary reasons. A head teacher must formally tell parents that their child will be excluded by giving them details in writing. Any other exclusions are illegal, and we want them to stop. . Four years later I never thought I would be home schooling again! Hopefully just for today and back to normality tomorrow. My question is how is it I’ve managed to get him to do some school work yet the school struggle? Yes he’s got distracted at times and wandered off and played a little but he came back in his own time and carried on until it was done 🤷♀️ very few meltdowns (well none to the extreme that he has at school). He’s wanted to do his school work and prove he’s capable and has enjoyed doing it. I know schools are stretched and as I’ve been reminded haven’t got the resources to “deal” with him yet they took him on knowing he had physical needs and most likely emotional and social needs. The system is truly broken and there will only be one casualty and that’s the children. All children are not the same but this age group (Covid cohort I’ve called them) are the ones being punished for something that was out of their control and @borisjohnsonuk and the @conservatives should be ashamed about the state of not only our education system but also our NHS. # rantover

Here are the steps required for a parent to complete an immunization exemption in Ontario for school-age children: 1. Watch the Vaccine Education video found on the Region of Waterloo Public Health website. Complete the form and electronically sign the attestation after the video to get your vaccine education certificate emailed to you. There is a fast forward option on the video. 2. Print and complete https://mamabearsproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/on-form.pdf form. You will need one form for each child that needs an exemption. 3. Take the completed form to a Commissioner of Oaths to have it signed and stamped. Photo ID with a signature is required (e.g. driver’s license, picture health card). Some offices require an appointment and some may charge a fee. A Commissioner of Oaths can be one of the following: o Municipal Clerks or Deputy Clerks for your local municipality o Members of the Provincial Government (MPPs) o Provincial Judges o Justices of the Peace o Barristers or Solicitors licensed to practice law in Ontario o Licensed Paralegals o A notary Public 4. Yesterday we held our #deadlyfutures graduation for 2023. Unfortunately, due to a staff crisis in late 2023.. we had to hold off on celebrating our YP achievements until now. Congrats to all the graduates of the CLASS OF 2023 🎓 Deadly Futures is an education re-engagement program for Aboriginal students of high school ages. Deadly Futures offers fun, creative, educational, psycho-social, cultural activities for Aboriginal young people who have been suspended, at risk of suspension or disengaged from school. This program is delivered three days per week during the school term to high school students, particularly those who are involved or at risk of involvement with the justice and/or child protection system/s. The main goals of the Deadly Futures project are to; Strengthen Aboriginal young people’s identity and connection to culture Improve school/education engagement Develop literacy/numeracy skills Disrupt the school to prison pipeline Provide accessible, fun, pro social activities to the Aboriginal participants Provide mentoring and links to internal/external services and supports Provide information, advocacy and referral for families Drug and alcohol information and education including risks associated with substance abuse Eligibility: An Aboriginal high school student Willing to travel to Alexandria to attend Suspended or disengaged or at risk of suspension from school. This is the kid who was suspended from school. He is autistic and ADHD. He doesn't really know what he did and the consequence of suspension from school means little to him as for so many neurodiverse children and young people who don't respond well to consequences that are not natural and that are enforced punishments. Natural consequences to behaviour are much easier to interpret and to understand, but this enforced punishment is not related in any way to what happened and as such is beyond his comprehension skills. The management team of the school said they had no choice but to suspend him as they will not tolerate that type of behaviour. But when he ran away it was because of the stress response, not because he was deliberately eloping. His body and mind was in a state of fight, flight or freeze and there was nothing he could do about it, there had been a lot to cope with and to process and he just couldn't take it anymore so when the teacher started to question him, he ran away, took off through the window and scaled the outside fence. If only someone understood him, could see the inner anguish, turmoil and anxiety, the inappropriate strategies that were being implemented, if only someone could have helped him. He just needed a calm word, a reassuring touch, a gentle approach, but it never came and the brain fog engulfed him instead. Now he's suspended. They don't want him there anymore and he feels bereft. No-one can reach him now. Startling statistics reveal a concerning rise in school suspensions among children from disadvantaged backgrounds in England following the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 3,000 pupils are now estimated to be sent home daily, with teachers reporting an alarming surge in verbal and physical abuse incidents. According to the Department for Education's Sats test data, the "disadvantage gap" in academic results remains significantly wider than pre-pandemic levels, particularly affecting economically disadvantaged children. School suspensions have spiked by 30% in the 2021-22 academic year compared to 2018-19, with a staggering 75% increase observed among disadvantaged students. Over half of all suspensions in the past year involved these students, who were 3.7 times more likely to face suspension than their peers. Children with social workers and special needs were four times more likely to be suspended, potentially leading to permanent exclusion. The increase was most pronounced in the East Midlands, followed by the north-west and north-east, while inner London saw a comparatively smaller rise. Disturbingly, Black Caribbean children and other minority groups faced disproportionately higher suspension rates. Teachers attribute this surge in poor behaviour to COVID-19 restrictions impacting socialization skills. SUSPENDED. One of ThE toughest punishments a child can experience. And a parent 🥲 It’s one I’ve experienced with my eldest son. And it’s devastating. To the child, their siblings - and - to the family. DEVASTATING. I have a few families at @thebackchatclinic experiencing this at the moment. And boy, am I FURIOUS with one local school @educationqueensland 😡 I’ve known this little one and his family for 4 years. Autistic, highly intelligent and receiving NO support at school. Yep you heard me. NONE. Highly intelligent and masked because of the loving family he comes from. His Mum repeatedly flagged he was struggling. Growth & hormones - requiring higher level paediatric care - but the school is not listening. Nor making adjustments. “He’s just a naughty boy” 😡😞😬 Ummm no. He has Autism. And he is NOT supported at school. At all. Because early intervention has worked well. He is so masked. He’s also not getting any positives now. No one listens, or observes - no one - really cares 😥🤷🏻♀️😞 It’s a familiar story. And one I hear often at @thebackchatclinic But I watched the @nrltigers performance last week again. And I observed the team’s relationship with their new coach @tim_sheehan10 @nrl Such a difference from Michael Maguire. Mr 11 and I watched a documentary on @netflix with Maguire, and he said F*ck 23 times to his team in the dressing room. Not exactly working on relationships is he 🤷🏻♀️ But back to SUSPENSIONS… I’ve had GREAT news from a Mum - and Teacher - from a local school. NOPE. No. Not happening anymore. Suspensions are banned. The Principal refuses. They have a day out or go fishing with the child being excluded. Gosh. Talk about relationship. Connection. And care. SUSPENSIONS are not the answer. But week after week instead. Reading, talking, engaging with, & storing how they are doing. That’s the only easy to help these little ones. Students with disabilities cannot be expelled or suspended (for more than 10 days) for behavior that is a manifestation of their disability. After 10 days, it becomes a "change in placement," and the school must hold a manifestation determination hearing. If your child is suspended for behavior related to his disability, that means he needs more support -- not punishment.

"Great job" vs "Great job starting your independent work so quietly!" "Amazing" vs "Wow, you did amazing remembering to write your name on your paper!" Keep statements focused on the positive behaviors! "You're doing great keeping your hands to yourself in line" instead of "You're doing great not touching the papers in the hallway." This not only works for the student you are rewarding but other students as well! If you bring more attention to specific positive behaviors, it serves as a great reminder for other students who may not be making the right choice. It also gives the student who is doing the expected behavior reassurance that what they are doing is appreciated. Do you have a student, or maybe a few that are super chatty? You don't want to discourage them from sharing stories or participating, but you also want to make sure other students are getting equal chances to participate. I suggest picking a specific time or activity of your day to try this first. If it were me, I would suggest circle time, especially if you teach the littles! I absolutely love hearing their stories and how they have a personal story for every page of the book you're reading or lesson you're teaching, but we still need to teach and we want to hear others' amazing stories too. You can pass out a specified number of talk tickets per student. I recommend trying out 2-3 and seeing how that goes and adjust as needed. Students learn to pick and choose when to share their stories. This could be helpful for some adults too right? Just kidding! I hope you enjoy this resource! The Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC) reports large, persistent gaps between Black and White students on educational outcomes such as school suspensions, uptake of AP classes, assignment to special education and gifted and talented classes, and grade-level retention (2020). How is this possible in the 21st century? Socioeconomic status interrupts the learning experience for many black and brown students. Racial disparities, unstable learning opportunities and school suspensions are attributable to students’ home environments or characteristics. To track student issues and not immediately provide intervention to help them (they are children who need support) is described as racialized tracking. Instead of interrupting the issue, they are categorized by whether they are in the lower quartile for reading, their discipline issues or truancy/absenteeism.
